Book Catalogue of Irish Manuscripts in Houghton Library Harvard University

Download or read book Catalogue of Irish Manuscripts in Houghton Library Harvard University written by Cornelius G. Buttimer and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full account of North America’s largest collection of traditional Irish-language manuscripts. Harvard University has the largest collection of Irish-language codices in North America, held in Houghton Library, its rare book repository. The manuscripts are a part of the age-old heritage of Irish book production, dating to the early Middle Ages. Handwritten works in Houghton contain versions of medieval poetry and sagas, recopied in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, to which period most of the library’s documents belong. Contemporary writings from that time, as well as ones by the post-Famine Irish immigrant community in the United States, are included. This catalogue describes the collection in full for the first time and will be an invaluable aid to research on Irish and Irish American cultural and literary output. The author’s introduction examines how the collection was formed. This untold story is an important chapter in America’s intellectual history, reflecting a phase of unprecedented expansion in Harvard University’s scholarship and teaching during the early twentieth century when the institution’s program of studies began to accommodate an increasing range of European languages and literatures and their sources. This indispensable guide to a major repository’s records of the Irish past, and of America’s Irish diaspora, will interest specialists in early and post-medieval codices. It should prove of relevance as well to scholars and students of comparative literature, cultural studies, and Irish and Irish American history.

Book Medieval Gaelic Sources

Download or read book Medieval Gaelic Sources written by Katharine Simms and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gaelic language sources for medieval and early modern Irish history were the product of the bardic schools in history, poetry, law and medicine. Comprising annals, genealogies, poems, prose tracts and sagas, legal and medical material, colophons and marginalia, they have long been more familiar to Celticists than historians, apart from the editions of the Irish annals." "This book provides a practical guide for those interested in researching Gaelic Ireland who would like to glean usable historical information from such texts, and lays emphasis on works for which translated editions are available. It discusses the purposes for which they were originally created, their survival and accessibility in print and on the internet, and, above all, how to make use of them as historical sources. It is intended as an aid to those beginning postgraduate research, and for all interested in investigating Irish family or local history in the medieval and Tudor period." --Book Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In critical opinion and popular polls, Máirtín Ó Cadhain’s Graveyard Clay is invariably ranked the most important prose work in modern Irish. This bold new translation of his radically original Cré na Cille is the shared project of two fluent speakers of the Irish of Ó Cadhain’s native region, Liam Mac Con Iomaire and Tim Robinson. They have achieved a lofty goal: to convey Ó Cadhain’s meaning accurately and to meet his towering literary standards. Graveyard Clay is a novel of black humor, reminiscent of the work of Synge and Beckett. The story unfolds entirely in dialogue as the newly dead arrive in the graveyard, bringing news of recent local happenings to those already confined in their coffins. Avalanches of gossip, backbiting, flirting, feuds, and scandal-mongering ensue, while the absurdity of human nature becomes ever clearer. This edition of Ó Cadhain’s masterpiece is enriched with footnotes, bibliography, publication and reception history, and other materials that invite further study and deeper enjoyment of his most engaging and challenging work.

Download or read book The Dirty Dust written by Máirtín Ó Cadhain and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Máirtín Ó Cadhain’s irresistible and infamous novel The Dirty Dust is consistently ranked as the most important prose work in modern Irish, yet no translation for English-language readers has ever before been published. Alan Titley’s vigorous new translation, full of the brio and guts of Ó Cadhain’s original, at last brings the pleasures of this great satiric novel to the far wider audience it deserves. In The Dirty Dust all characters lie dead in their graves. This, however, does not impair their banter or their appetite for news of aboveground happenings from the recently arrived. Told entirely in dialogue, Ó Cadhain’s daring novel listens in on the gossip, rumors, backbiting, complaining, and obsessing of the local community. In the afterlife, it seems, the same old life goes on beneath the sod. Only nothing can be done about it—apart from talk. In this merciless yet comical portrayal of a closely bound community, Ó Cadhain remains keenly attuned to the absurdity of human behavior, the lilt of Irish gab, and the nasty, deceptive magic of human connection.
