Download or read book Connecting Cities with Macroeconomic Concerns written by Mila Freire and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current economic thinking argues that the ability of cities to create wealth depends on agglomeration economies, relating to the geographic concentration of industries and people which interact to create enterprise, employment and growth. This book finds that the quality of local services significantly influences the productivity and economic development of a city and the ability of firms to contribute to wealth. The study is based on surveys conducted in five cities: Belo Horizonte in Brazil, Montreal in Canada, Puebla in Mexico, San Josâ in Costa Rica and San Salvador in El Salvador.

Download or read book The Contributions of Infrastructure to Economic Development written by Christine Kessides and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the linkages between infrastructure and economic development based on both formal empirical research and informal case studies. The main thesis is that economic benefits result from investments in infrastructure only to the extent that they generate a sustainable flow of services valued by consumers. Thus, an analysis of infrastructures' contributions to growth must look at the impacts of services as actually perceived, not at indirect indicators that measure only aggregate provision of infrastructure capital. The paper notes that macro and industry level research , although having its limitations, suggest a positive and statistically significant relationship between infrastructure and economic output. However the conclusions derived from this research (most of which derives from developed countries) provide little specific guidance for policy. To gain more practical insights about how infrastructure contributes to economic growth and to improved quality of life, and to understand the welfare costs of inadequate or unreliable infrastructure, it is necessary to look at microeconomic evidence. Particularly interesting illustrations of these relationships are to be found in developing countries where there is wide variance in the availability and quality of infrastructure.

Book excerpt: Experience of the past decade confirms that the solution to infrastructure problems is not merely to expand capacity by making new investments. Much more systematic changes must be undertaken if service delivery is to attain the standards necessary to improve quality of life and allow economic output to expand more rapidly. This paper identifies several broad areas for reform and recommends a series of actions to attain effective service delivery. (Adapté du résumé de l'auteur).

Download or read book Urban Management written by G. Shabbir Cheema and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1993-03-30 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relentless growth of cities is inevitable--and irreversible. Developing countries' share of the world's urban population will rise to 71% by the year 2000 and 80% by 2025. By the end of the 1990s, it is estimated that 18 cities in developing countries will have a population of 10 million or more. Although those cities are centers of production, employment, and innovation, rapid urbanization has had many negative consequences: an alarming increase in the incidence of urban poverty, the concentration of modern productive activities in major metropolitan areas, inadequate access to housing and basic urban services, and the degradation of the urban environment. Urban Management reviews the state of the art in innovative urban management, discusses the latest findings on key issues of urban management, and identifies policy-relevant research needs and priorities. Chapters are contributed by urban specialists from Asia, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and North America, who identify urbanization processes and strategies, provide comparative analyses of urban management issues throughout the world, and present original country case studies. Recommended for urban development planners and administrators in developing countries, persons from donor countries working on projects in developing countries, students of urban management, and others interested in developmental issues at the global, regional, national, and municipal levels.
