Acetophenone is the simplest aromatic ketone organic compound and it has a sweet taste and smell that resembles that of oranges. It is used for various purposes in the industry. Acetophenone is a colorless liquid with a sweet pungent taste. Alcohols are one of the most important molecules in organic chemistry. They can be prepared from many different types of compounds, and they can be converted into many different types of compounds. The allethrins are a pair of related synthetic compounds used in insecticides. They are synthetic pyrethroids, a synthetic form of a chemical found naturally in the chrysanthemum flower. Acetaldehyde is a key raw material in the production of a wide range of chemical products such as paint binders in alkyd paints and as a plasticizer for plastics. Acetaldehyde is also used a base in the manufacture of acetic acid, another platform chemical with many applications. Acetaldehyde is also used as an aromatic agent and is found naturally in fruits and fruit juices. Formaldehyde, also known as methanal, is a colorless and flammable gas that has a pungent smell and is soluble in water. Formaldehyde is used in Circuit Board Manufacture, Laboratory Chemicals, Paper Coatings, Photochemicals, Printed Circuit Board Manufacturing and Rubber Manufacture. Hydroquinone is a Melanin Synthesis Inhibitor. Hydroquinone is mainly used in photosensitive materials, rubber, dyes, pharmaceutical industry. The Indian chemical industry is an integral component of Indian economy, contributing around 6.7 per cent of the Indian GDP. This book was released on 2003-08-03 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern age chemical industries have permeated most extensively in comparison with other industries and are progressing at a very rapid pace. Chemical Industry in India is one of the fastest growing industries under the Indian economy. The chemical industry comprises the companies that produce industrial chemicals. Central to the modern world economy, it converts raw materials into more than 70,000 different products. Chemicals have contributed in various sectors like food industry, fertilizers, perfumery, fragrance and flavour etc. Chemicals are used to make a wide variety of consumer goods, as well as thousands inputs to agriculture, manufacturing, construction, and service industries. There are numerous chemicals produced in chemical industry for example chloroform, caffeine, fertilizers , dyes, drug intermediates, herbicide, inorganic salts, copper sulphate, acetaldehyde etc. The chemical industry itself consumes 26 percent of its own output. The Chemical Industry in India is based on the idea of diversification. For example inorganic chemicals is the sector where the growth rate is near about 9% and the chemicals produced in this sector are mainly used in alkalis, fertilizers, etc. Depending on the product categories the chemical industry is divided in many other sectors like drugs and pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, fine chemicals like dyes and paints etc. The chemical industry in India which generates almost 13% of total national export is growing annually at a growth rate anywhere between 10% and 12%. This book majorly deals with the molecular formula, raw materials, properties, laboratory testing, manufacturing process explained with flow diagrams and uses of the chemicals. The major contents of the book are inorganic salts, inorganic chemicals, industrial gas, fertilizers, alum, caffeine, ceramic chemicals etc. This book covers the production of more than 100 chemicals for example acetanilide, methylamine, butylamine, linalol, phosphorous, salicylic acid etc. This book should be of great value to young chemical engineers and chemists who are just entering the field but those already practicing will find much of interest and use for broadening of their insight in to fields in which they are only marginally informed. It is hoped that this book will aid to young engineers, chemical, civil, mechanical and electrical as well as chemists, in understanding the value of chemical, the type of problems met in their production and method for solving these problems. Book Detailed Project Profiles on 9 Selected Chemical Industries 2nd Revised Edition

Download or read book Detailed Project Profiles on 9 Selected Chemical Industries 2nd Revised Edition written by Ajay Kr. Gupta and published by NIIR PROJECT CONSULTANCY SERVICES. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (LIMITED EDITION- ONLY PHOTOSTAT COPY AVAILABLE) The chemicals sub-sector of industry in India as a whole (including pharmaceuticals) accounts for about 13% of the total output of the manufacturing sector, 13 to 14% in total exports and 8 to 9% in total imports of the country. The sector contributes about 3% to the GDP. It also contributes 18 to 20% to the exchequer by way of taxes. The size of the sub-sector is estimated at around USD 35 bn (approximately Rs 1575 bn). The basic chemicals make up for nearly 57% of the sub-sector, followed by about 26% of specialty chemicals. The rest is made up of high-end chemicals or what are now termed as knowledge segment. Against an overall installed capacity of around 10 mn tonnes, India produces nearly 8 mn tonne, of an assortment of chemicals. These exclude petrochemicals, but include chlor-alkalis, and dyes and dyestuffs. The chemicals industry is a highly versatile segment in the overall industrial economy of India. It has linkages with almost every other industrial activity, be it food processing, metallurgy, textiles, rubber or leather. There is, in fact, hardly any segment where chemicals do not feature. The industry is broadly segmented into four major categories: Chlor-alkali and inorganic chemicals: caustic soda, soda ash, sulphuric acid, titanium dioxide, carbon black, calcium carbide, aluminium fluoride and others; Organic including alcohol-based chemicals: ethyl glycol, phenols, acetic acid, acetic anhydride, vinyl acetate, monomers, ethylene dichloride, ethylacetate and others; Petrochemicals-based specialities: leather and textile auxiliaries, synthetic resins, rubber chemicals, especially for tyres; and Agro-oriented chemicals: guargum, starch, citric acid, sorbitol, yeast and others. Petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, synthetic fibres, fertilisers and pesticides, paints and dye-stuffs constitute over 85% of the market. The remaining 15% represents a wide range of chemical intermediates and industrial or speciality chemicals which have a market of over Rs 240 bn (including imports of about Rs 35 bn). Against the growth dynamics of the chemical industry as a whole, the industrial chemicals segment covering intermediates and speciality chemicals witnessed a somewhat sluggish growth in recent years. Thereafter some upward trend was in evidence as a con-sequence of a rally in user industries like rubber, leather, food processing, textiles especially man-made fibres and fabrics. Downstream industries like chlorinated benzenes, cosmetics and pesticides also registered positive trends. The industry has remained among the fastest growing sectors of the economy. The chemical industry remains concentrated in the western region, which claims a near 50% share of investment flows. In the western region, Gujarat makes the largest contribution to the chemical industry’s production activity. This book provides detailed project profiles of important chemical industries with its properties, uses & applications, manufacturing processes, process flow sheets, cost estimations. The book also contains addresses of machinery and raw material suppliers of the mentioned chemicals. Research scholars, professional students, scientists, new entrepreneurs, and present manufacturers will find valuable educational material and wider knowledge of these 9 selected chemicals in this book. Comprehensive in scope, the book provides solutions that are directly applicable to the properties, manufacturing technology and other specific details of these chemicals.

Book Chemistry Society and Environment

Download or read book Chemistry Society and Environment written by Colin Archibald Russell and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2000 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been several attempts to write the history of Britain's chemical industry as a whole, and countless others concentrating on individual companies. Some have looked at the technical aspects of the industry, whilst others have addressed economic issues. Few have, however, attempted to analyse the effects of the chemical industry on society in general. The current environmental crisis can only be fully understood in the light of its history. This is the first such book to look critically at the whole development of industrial chemistry in the UK in the context of its effects on the environment. No one from industry, government or academia can afford to be unaware of the historical roots of our present dilemma. Industrial chemists can take heart from the realization that their predecessors were remarkably aware of the problems and often found satisfactory solutions. Industrial chemistry has traditionally been seen as the great 'polluter'. Without any attempts at 'whitewash' this book puts the record straight. From academic chemist to industrialist to politician, Chemistry, Society and Environment: A New History of the British Chemical Industry will be of relevance to all those concerned with the social and environmental impact of the chemical industry.

Book an introduction to Industrial Chemistry

Download or read book an introduction to Industrial Chemistry written by C A Heaton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of industrial chemistry Chemistry is a challenging and interesting subject for academic study. Its principles and ideas are used to produce the chemicals from which all manner of materials and eventually consumer products are manufactured. The diversity of examples is enormous, ranging from cement to iron and steel, and on to modern plastics which are so widely used in the packaging of consumer goods and in the manufacture of household items. Indeed life as we know it today could not exist without the chemical industry. Its contribution to the saving of lives and relief of suffering is immeasurable; synthetic drugs such as those which lower blood pressure (e. g. /3-blockers), attack bacterial and viral infections (e. g. antibiotics such as the penicillins and cephalosporins) and replace vital natural chemicals which the body is not producing due to some malfunction (e. g. insulin, some vitamins), are particularly noteworthy in this respect. Effect chemicals also clearly make an impact on our everyday lives. Two examples are the use of polytetrafluoroethylene (polytetrafluoroethene Teflon or Fluon) to provide a non-stick surface coating for cooking utensils, and silicones which are used to ease the discharge of bread from baking tins. It should also be noted that the chemical industry's activities have an influence on all other industries, either in terms of providing raw materials or chemicals for quality control analyses and to improve operation, and to treat boiler water, cooling water and effiuents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background This book provides an introduction to the main sectors of the chemical industry, and complements An Introduction to Industrial Chemistry (sub sequently referred to as Volume I) which covers the physico-chemical principles of the subject, as well as introductory technical economics and chemical engineering. Processes considered include the large-scale production of polymers (up to 1000 tonnes per day for a single plant); the chlor-alkali, nitrogen, sulphur and phosphorus industries; and the production, on a smaller scale, of dyestuffs, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. The rapidly developing area of biotech nology is dealt with under biological catalysis. The consequences of scale of operation are also highlighted in Chapter 7. Each chapter includes common themes, such as brief history, present position, major products and the future. The final chapter links together the predictions made for the future of each sector, to give an overall projection for the whole chemical industry; the quadrupling of oil prices in 1974 and the widespread recession at the beginning of the 1980s provide a salutary lesson about the difficulty of such projections.
