Book Manufacture of Artillery Ammunition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manufacture of Artillery Ammunition Classic Reprint written by L. P. Alford and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manufacture of Artillery Ammunition Our vital national need for a text-book dealing with the quantity manufacture of army and navy materials should require little either by way of explanation or comment. Two years of experience on orders for foreign governments have taught our American manufacturers that the making of materials of modem warfare is a new art. It is an art with which we have had little or no previous experience and in which our workmen are unskilled. In England, a little over two years ago there were not more than three government arsenals. Today more than four thousand of England's leading industrial plants are being operated as government factories for the production of war materials, and many other thousands of factories still under private control are concentrating their energies in the same direction. The teaching of the munition-making art to these thousands of manufacturers and to millions of industrial workers, both men and women, has called for a work in industrial organization and education such as the world has never before seen. In France, in Germany, in Italy, in Japan, and even in Russia, this same education and organization of the industrial forces is going forward. We have here in the United States vast resources in manufacturing and producing equipment, but they are unorganized and uneducated for the national service. Our observations of the European war have taught us that it is upon organized industry that we must base any and every plan of military defence, and that in the event of trouble with any one of the several first-class powers, between eighty and ninety percent, of our industrial activity would, of necessity, be centered upon the making of supplies for the government. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook for Light Artillery IN preparing this work it has been my endeavor to place in compact form all the data I could obtain that might prove of service to those persons interested in the subject of light artillery, both in the Regular Army and in the National Guard. I have held strictly to the lines laid down in Army Regulations, Drill Regulations, Official Reports, etc., as regards the matter extracted from such sources; and such as has not been so obtained has been carefully selected from the best authorities I have been able to consult. I make no claim to originality in this work. It is drawn on the lines of similar handbooks in foreign services; and a great deal of the matter has been copied verbatim from the works consulted. To the writers and compilers of those works I hereby express my thanks. While I do not consider that machine-guns are proper weapons for the light artillerist, I feel that occasions may arise when knowledge regarding them may prove of service; hence the chapter pertaining to them. Both climate and soil are just What suit the numerous varieties found in such abundance. It is not, therefore, surprising that it should also produce the greatest number of Shooters and the best shots; there is no doubt that, in proportion to population, the game-shooters of America largely outnumber those Of any other country, England included. It is equally true that they are, as a rule, better shots, use better guns and better ammunition, and have a far more thorough acquaintance with all that concerns guns, ammunition, habits of game, and how to shoot, than their brother sportsmen in other countries. Book America s Munitions 1917 1918

Download or read book America s Munitions 1917 1918 written by Benedict Crowell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America's Munitions, 1917-1918: Report of Benedict Crowell, the Assistant Secretary of War, Director of Munitions Except in one or two instances, this account of the production of munitions in America for the war against Germany and her allies contains nothing about secret devices invented during the period under discussion. When the necessity for silence with respect to vital matters brought about a voluntary censorship in American publications, the land was filled with rumors of new and revolutionary developments in war materiel, particularly of new weapons of Offense. It is fair to the American public to-day to state that such rumors were not without foundation. American inventiveness rose splendidly to the emergency. The expected American Offensive in 1919 would have had its surprises in numbers, some of which might well have proved to be decisive. Certain Of these inventions had been put in large production before the armistice was declared, others had been carried to an advanced experimental stage that insured their success. Since the value of these innovations as part of the Nation's permanent military assets depends largely upon their secret nature, it would be obviously unwise to mention or describe them at this time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture of Munitions in Canada While all of the work I have described was not undertaken in connec tion with the original order I have discussed it at some length in an attempt to portray something that I do not believe is properly appreciated, the magnitude of the original venture undertaken by the Shell Committee, the amount of hard earnest work it required and the ability with which it was executed. The whole development of munition work in Canada grew from the satisfactory execution of these preliminary orders and General Sir Alexander Bertram and his confreres deserve the greatest credit and recognition for their success. Book The Principles and Practice of Modern Artillery Including Artillery Material Gunnery and Organization and Use of Artillery in Warfare Classic Reprint

Owen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Modern Artillery, Including Artillery Material, Gunnery and Organization and Use of Artillery in Warfare The attempt has been made, it is hoped with success, to lay a solid foundation in each branch, and to provide, by ample references to the best books, the means of pursuing either of them by further study. Whenever possible, mere Opinions have been avoided, as unsuitable to a work dealing chiefly with the results of practice and the principles to be derived from them. Part I. Gives a general description of the construction and objects of the different guns, carriages, and kinds of ammunition now used, without which the subsequent parts would be but imperfectly understood. To simplify the subject, naval stores and small arms have been omitted, occasional reference being however made to the former in the foot-notes; for the same reason, most of the large tables have been placed in the Appendix. In Part II. Long mathematical investigations have been avoided, but references have been given to where they may be found; and the methods of calculating practical gunnery questions have been fully explained. Part III. Treats of a subject too little studied in this country, but which is of great importance, and commands apparently at the present time a growing interest.
