Pour cette nouvelle édition, le manuel a donc été considérablement revu et développé. Le manuel couvre désormais aussi l'évaluation du risque et l'utilisation sans risque des techniques faisant appel à l'ADN recombinant. Il donne par ailleurs des lignes directrices pour la mise en service et la certification des laboratoires. Il présente les concepts de la sécurité biologique et les règlementations internationales les plus récentes sur le transport des matières infectieuses. On y a également intégré les informations sur la sécurité dans les laboratoires d'analyses médicales, publiées auparavant dans d'autres documents de l'OMS. Nous espérons que le manuel continuera d'inciter les pays à instituer des programmes de sécurité biologique et des codes nationaux de bonnes pratiques pour manipuler sans danger les matières potentiellement infectieuses.
