Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 2 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.
Download or read book Image of the Other and the Self in the American and British press during the Gulf Crisis and War written by Ingrid Deweweire and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The invasion of Kuwait by Iraqi troops on 2 August 1990 triggered a large-scale military operation conducted by Washington as well as a huge media campaign. This study seeks to compare the American press with the British press during the Gulf Crisis and War. The main objective is to examine the journalistic discourse of opinion as developed by newspapers belonging to the so-called quality press and deconstruct the ways in which this discourse was developed. This raises questions about the language adopted by editorialists and journalists and in particular about the way in which the Other - enemy and allies - and the Self - the USA and the UK - were described by the American daily papers, the New York Times and the Washington Post and the British daily papers, the Times and the Guardian and the Sunday newspapers, the Sunday Times and the Observer during the crisis and the war. The study is based on a comparative analysis of editorials, opinion articles and letters to the editor published in the selected newspapers in order to highlight subjects and themes in connection with the image of the Other and the Self and show the differences and similarities in the processing of information in both the American and British press.

Download or read book Evolution on British Television and Radio written by Alexander Hall and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the history of how biological evolution has been depicted on British television and radio, from the first radio broadcast on evolution in 1925 through to the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s Origin of the Species in 2009. Going beyond science documentaries, the chapters deal with a broad range of broadcasting content to explore evolutionary themes in radio dramas, educational content, and science fiction shows like Doctor Who. The book makes the case that the dominant use in science broadcasting of the ‘evolutionary epic’, a narrative based on a progressive vision of scientific endeavour, is part of the wider development of a standardised way of speaking about science in society during the 20th century. In covering the diverse range of approaches to depicting evolution used in British productions, the book demonstrates how their success had a global influence on the genres and formats of science broadcasting used today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of essays is entitled `Challenges Ahead'. An ambitious title, but an appropriate one; for the contributors, as the 21st century draws near, ask themselves a number of basic questions about the future of the law in a world undergoing such profound changes. Their reflections will certainly give both cause for hope and reason to fear. This Liber Amicorum dedicated to Professor Frits Kalshoven, is written by specialists who for many years have given their best to the development and promotion of humanitarian law. It will make a significant contribution to the understanding of international humanitarian law.

Download or read book The Trade in the Living written by Luiz Felipe de Alencastro and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth-century missionary and diplomat Father Antônio Vieira once observed that Brazil was nourished, animated, sustained, served, and conserved by the "sad blood" of the "black and unfortunate souls" imported from Angola. In The Trade in the Living, Luiz Felipe de Alencastro demonstrates how the African slave trade was an essential element in the South Atlantic and in the ongoing cohesion of Portuguese America, while at the same time the concrete interests of Brazilian colonists, dependent on Angolan slaves, were often violently asserted in Africa, to ensure men and commodities continued to move back and forth across the Atlantic. In exposing this intricate and complementary relationship between two non-European continents, de Alencastro has fashioned a new and challenging examination of colonial Brazil, one that moves beyond its relationship with Portugal to discover a darker, hidden history.
