Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Total Science, Jean-Guy Prévost charts how Italian statistics emerged as a full-fledged discipline, giving rise to a network of university chairs, journals, and other institutions. He focuses on episodes such as the creation of the famous Gini coefficient and the statisticians' participation in Italy's war effort and also analyses the intellectual project to which most statisticians were committed, that of creating a quantitative social science. In doing so he reveals the political and ideological use of the work of statisticians during the Fascist era.

Book Manual of Standardization in the Romance Languages

This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language standardization is an ongoing process based on the notions of linguistic correctness and models. This manual contains thirty-six chapters that deal with the theories of linguistic norms and give a comprehensive up-to-date description and analysis of the standardization processes in the Romance languages. The first section presents the essential approaches to the concept of linguistic norm ranging from antiquity to the present, and includes individual chapters on the notion of linguistic norms and correctness in classical grammar and rhetoric, in the Prague School, in the linguistic theory of Eugenio Coseriu, in sociolinguistics as well as in pragmatics, cognitive and discourse linguistics. The second section focuses on the application of these notions with respect to the Romance languages. It examines in detail the normative grammar and the normative dictionary as the reference tools for language codification and modernization of those languages that have a long and well-established written tradition, i.e. Romanian, Italian, French, Catalan, Spanish, and Portuguese. Furthermore, the volume offers a discussion of the key issues regarding the standardization of the ‘minor’ Romance languages as well as Creoles.

Book Population Place and Spatial Interaction

Download or read book Population Place and Spatial Interaction written by Rachel S. Franklin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-23 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the geographical—or spatial—aspects of population research in regional science, spanning spatial demographic methods for population composition and migration to studies of internal and international migration to investigations of the role of population in related fields such as climate change and economic growth. If spatial aspects of economic growth and development are the flagship of the regional science discipline, population research is the anchor. People migrate, consume, produce, and demand services. People are the source and beneficiaries of national, regional, and local growth and development. Since the origins of regional science, demographic research has been at the core of the discipline. Contributions in this volume are both retrospective and prospective, offering in their ensemble an authoritative overview of demographic research within the field of regional science.

Book Recent Social Trends in Italy 1960 1995

Download or read book Recent Social Trends in Italy 1960 1995 written by Alberto Martinelli and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1999-03-30 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italy remains an enigma for many observers. Recent Social Trends in Italy, 1960-1995, the sixth volume from the international Comparative Charting of Social Change program, provides a new and convincing schema for its comprehension. It shows that three essential institutions have structured and unified Italian society: the family, the church, and political parties. While the state remains a weak institution, it is important as a regulator of the economy and of society through the welfare state. The book, which contains a long introduction by Alberto Martinelli on the uneven modernization of Italy, shows the usefulness of analysing social change through study of a series of macro-social trends. These trends range from life-style structures to fertility, leisure, consumption, inequality, religion, and family, among others. This sixth national profile provides more arguements in favour of a hypothesis of diversification, rather than convergence, of modern societies. As Henri Mendras writes in the preface of the book, "The more we change, the more we remain ourselves: that is the conclusion of our comparative research, and the Italian study provides further ample proof of it."

Book Luigi Amoroso

Download or read book Luigi Amoroso written by Mario Pomini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines the rich and complex path of Luigi Amoroso, the main exponent of the Paretian School in Italy and probably the most important Italian mathematical economist during the interwar period. The author presents, in a systematic form, the evolution of Amoros's thinking and his main achievements. Despite his relevance, many aspects of Amoroso's thought are little known or misunderstood. This volume delves further to explore the Paretian tradition in which Amoroso enlisted, the conservative anti-democratic ideology that prompted his adhesion to fascism, his contribution to defining the main features of economic theory as formal science, and his various contributions to specific fields such as microeconomic theory, equilibrium dynamics, business cycles and non-competitive markets. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in the history of economic thought.

Book Private Bankers in the Italian 19th Century

Download or read book Private Bankers in the Italian 19th Century written by Luciano Maffi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyses the role of private bankers who were pivotal in modernizing the economic and financial system of Italy in the XIX century. To achieve this they needed to interact with the international haute banque to organize and place the public loans and the large investments associated with the joint-stock companies. The theme of reputation, which is currently at the centre of the historiographical debate, is fundamental for the study of the private banker figures, whose professional success is linked to the limitless trust accorded to them by their circle of personal contacts. Historiography has studied the role of Italian bankers in the trade, credit and international finance during the modern age (XVI-XVIII centuries), but it has not analysed the banking system in the XIX century and its national and international relations. The case study of Banca Parodi of Genova fills the historiographical gap concerning the role of private bankers and banking institutions in Italy, highlighting the network between the Parodi family and the international haute banque; one of the most emblematic cases is the Rothschild family. The book presents a re-elaborates series of unpublished data, placing them at the disposal of the scientific community and analyses the role of private bankers in the development of Italian banking institutions in the XIX century to launch a scientific debate.

Book Economists and War

Download or read book Economists and War written by Fabrizio Bientinesi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War and economic power have been interwoven in the thought of scholars since the beginnings of economic science, and views on the role of war in the economy have shifted dramatically as the world order has changed. The centenary of World War I has offered the opportunity for increased reflection on this topic, particularly as the war itself stimulated new directions for both research and the development of theory. Economists and War brings together expert contributors who are united in their commitment to exploring this classic subject from innovative and heterodox points of view. The chapters presented in the book delve into a wide range of perspectives from Japan in the Second World War and Italy in the First; the debate on State intervention among German-speaking authors to the debate on the economic bases of perpetual peace; and from Keynes, who wrote on the ‘irrationality of war’, to Sismondi, who saw war as an opportunity for economic development, and not only for nation-states. This volume is essential reading for scholars of the history of economic thought, international political economy and intellectual history. It is also of great interest to those studying military and naval history.
