I volontari infatti, una volta attivati in caso di invasione, dovevano essere in grado di operare come forza clandestina e pertanto si rendeva necessario che avessero acquisito prima di tutto le nozioni basiche del combattimento individuale, alle quali si aggiungevano poi specifiche abilità, acquisite con appositi corsi di specializzazione.
