Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years since the first edition was published in the German language, and just over fifty years since the launch of the Earth’s first ever artificial satellite Sputnik 1, this third edition of the Handbook of Space Technology presents in fully integrated colour a detailed insight into the fascinating world of space for the first time in the English language. Authored by over 70 leading experts from universities, research institutions and the space industry, this comprehensive handbook describes the processes and methodologies behind the development, construction, operation and utilization of space systems, presenting the profound changes that have occurred in recent years in the engineering, materials, processes and even politics associated with space technologies and utilization. The individual chapters are self-contained, enabling the reader to gain a quick and reliable overview of a selected field; an extensive reference and keyword list helps those who wish to deepen their understanding of individual topics. Featuring superb, full colour illustrations and photography throughout, this interdisciplinary reference contains practical, hands-on engineering and planning information that will be invaluable to those on a career path within space technology, or simply for those of us who’d like to know more about this fascinating industry. Main section headings include: Introduction (historical overview, space missions) Fundamentals (orbital mechanics, aerothermodynamics/ reentry, space debris) Launch Vehicles (staged technologies, propulsion systems, launch infrastructure) Space Vehicle Subsystems (structure, energy supply, thermal controls, attitude control, communication) Aspects of Human Flight (man in space, life support systems, rendezvous and docking) Mission Operations (satellite operation, control center, ground station network) Utilization of Space (Earth observation, communication navigation, space astronomy, material sciences, space medicine, robotics) Configuration and Design of a Space Vehicle (mission concept, system concept, environmental simulation, system design, Galileo satellites) Management of Space Missions (project management, quality management, cost management, space law)

Book Spy Satellite Manual

Download or read book Spy Satellite Manual written by Dr. David Baker and published by Haynes Publishing UK. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1954, three years before the launch of Sputnik 1, the world’s first satellite, top-secret discussions were held in the United States to plan the development of military spy satellites, designed to obtain detailed photography of the Soviet Union’s military strength, and its potential for waging nuclear war. This book takes a detailed look at the programmes which resulted from the clandestine decision in the US to build highly secret spy satellites in parallel with civilian space plans, revealing for the first time previously classified details of the design and layout of photographic reconnaissance (spy) satellites including the Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL), America’s planned military space station. The author has obtained declassified material, lifting the veil of secrecy covering exactly what spy satellites are, how they operate, what their limitations are and what they look like. This book focuses on the development of the spy satellites themselves and on the political arena in which their successes, and failures, were played out, providing a fascinating insight into a secretive world.

Book NASA Saturn I IB Launch Vehicles Owner s Workshop Manual

Download or read book NASA Saturn I IB Launch Vehicles Owner s Workshop Manual written by Dr. David Baker and published by Haynes Publishing UK. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Saturn I and IB series of rockets fulfilled plans developed in the late 1950s to build a rocket which could triple the existing thrust levels of US rockets and equal the lifting capacity of the Soviet Union, launching satellites and spacecraft weighing more than 10 tonnes into Earth orbit and do it by the early 1960s. These rockets emerged from the work carried out by former V-2 technical director Wernher von Braun, working at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in Huntsville, Alabama. Three times more powerful than anything launched by America to that date, with a cluster of eight rocket motors for the first stage, the first Saturn I flew on October 27, 1961, and propelled America into the heavy-lift business. It was the Saturn I, and its successor the Saturn IB, with a more powerful second stage, that did all the preparatory work getting NASA ready to put men on the Moon. Between 1961 and 1975, the 19 flights of the Saturn I and IB achieved several historic “firsts”, launching the world’s first high-energy liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen upper stages into orbit in 1964, the first unmanned test of suborbital and orbital Apollo spacecraft in 1966, the first unmanned test of the Lunar Module in 1968, the first manned Apollo spacecraft Apollo 7 also in 1968, all three Skylab flights in 1973 and the last Apollo spacecraft flown in support of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Established in 1958 in response to Russia’s Sputnik 1, launched on 4 October as the world’s first artificial satellite, NASA - the National Aeronautics and Space Administration - emerged out of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics which had been formed in 1915. The NASA Operations Manual tells the story of America’s civilian space agency, the facilities it operates, where they are and what they do. It explains how much NASA costs the American taxpayer and looks at what it returns to the taxpayer in benefits to the economy. NASA has forged a niche in modern history that extends beyond the realisation of age-old dreams to leave Earth and explore the heavens - it has become a synonym for achievement, performance and greatness, in setting goals and achieving them, in failing and learning how to recover, in connecting people around the world with international programmes to explore our solar system and live our ambitions, and in improving the lives of people everywhere through its inventions, discoveries, its technology and its engineering. Sixty years after NASA took hold of the reins of US civilian space programmes, the agency has a bold vision for great and ambitious goals, taking humans back to the Moon and on to Mars, perhaps visiting an asteroid, or setting up an interplanetary transport system on the way. And all the time, providing inspiration for a new generation. With more than 300 photographs, line drawings and charts, this book tours the United States, describing the centres of excellence and the facilities where rockets are tested, satellites are built and humans prepare for space. With summary review of research laboratories, test rigs, experimental platforms and engineering facilities, this book describes the 60 years of NASA as it has evolved through changing requirements and expanding capabilities, building on the past and preparing for a bold future.

Book Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth

Download or read book Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth written by R. Buckminster Fuller and published by Estate of R. Buckminster Fuller. This book was released on 2008-07-15 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Fuller’s most popular works, Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth, is a brilliant synthesis of his world view. In this very accessible volume, Fuller investigates the great challenges facing humanity. How will humanity survive? How does automation influence individualization? How can we utilize our resources more effectively to realize our potential to end poverty in this generation? He questions the concept of specialization, calls for a design revolution of innovation, and offers advice on how to guide “spaceship earth” toward a sustainable future.
