Book excerpt: The demand for comparable, long-term, high quality data on forest ecosystems' status and changes is increasing at the international and global level. Yet, sources for such data are limited and in many case it is not possible to compare data from different monitoring initiatives across space and time because of methodological differences. Apart from technical manuals, there is no comprehensive multidisciplinary, scientific, peer-reviewed reference for forest monitoring methods that can serve and support the user community. This book provides in a single reference the state-of-the-art of monitoring methods as applied at the international level. The book present scientific concepts and methods that form the basis of the transnational, long-term forest monitoring in Europe and looks at other initiatives at the global level. Standardized methods that have been developed over two decades in international forest monitoring projects are presented. Emphasis is put on trans-nationally harmonized methods, related data quality issues, current achievements and on remaining open questions. A comprehensive overview of needs, requirements, organization and possible outcomes of an integrated monitoring program Tested and quality assured, internationally harmonized methodologies based on a complete revision of existing methods carried out in 2009-2011 Connection with monitoring results allows assessment of the potential of the monitoring method

National Forest Inventories (NFIs) and Forest Condition Monitoring (FCM) networks are primary sources of data for large area assessments of forest resources. This contribution seeks to outline a statistical perspective for the construction of a European forest monitoring system, able to provide statistically sound estimates of forest condition (defoliation) parameters and of their changes over time. Monitoring objectives, parameters of interest, and accuracy indexes are presented, under the assumption that a common definition for forests is adopted by European countries. The proposed estimators are of two types: (i) based solely on information acquired from FCM and (ii) derived from integration of FCM and NFIs.

Basic features for harmonized large-scale and intensive monitoring of vascular plants, cryptogams, and epiphytic lichens are presented. For the assessment of ground vegetation on the European scale, a minimum, single-scale approach (with a common sampling area of 400-m2) is suggested to produce sets of presence–absence and relative cover data. This common frame can accommodate national designs. For epiphytic lichens, sampling follows a standard procedure for tree selection after stratification by bark type. On each tree, four vertical grids of five 10×10cm contiguous quadrates are used to record the species occurrence. Monitoring parameters and timing of surveys, transformation of different abundance scales, and the need for continuously updated nomenclature are also discussed. Examples of transnational results (e.g., functional groups for both lichen and vascular plants and nitrogen deposition) are presented which demonstrate the importance and value of harmonized monitoring data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical analyses are an essential part of forest ecosystem monitoring activities. Harmonized, well-defined, and documented analytical methods are an important part of a laboratory Quality Control program and are essential to maximize spatial and temporal comparability of monitoring data. Different quality and data consistency checks, plausible ranges for analytical results, use of reference materials, and control charts are described for internal laboratory Quality Control. On the other side, coordinated ring tests among participating laboratories are an integral part of external Quality Control. Organization of ring tests, evaluation, and the benchmark with tolerable limits are described and specified. Results for water, foliage, and soil ring tests and the evaluation of quality indicators within the European forest ecosystem monitoring program are reported.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment and evaluation of tree condition and vitality is an essential part of the ICP Forests monitoring programme. Due to the complex structure of forest ecosystems, a number of different indicators of tree condition are adopted. In this chapter, they are described also in terms of their ecological relevance. Special emphasis is laid on biotic agents affecting forest ecosystems and explaining tree responses to stressors. For operational reasons, definitions and recommendations for the use of the indicators are given. Tree condition assessment in forest monitoring is closely linked to field measures of Quality Assurance and Control. Examples of results show that the methods currently used in tree condition monitoring are sensitive to detect the effects of climate change on forests and identifying main spatial and temporal patterns and damaging agents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter describes methods for long-term forest soil monitoring from the field design, to the laboratory analytical methods, and through to the data compilation and validation. Soil monitoring comprises two main pillars: the soil characterization, including a detailed soil profile description and classification; and the assessment of the physical and chemical status of the soil layers. Composite samples are taken at fixed-depth intervals, mainly for chemical analyses. Soil bulk density and soil water retention characteristics are measured using undisturbed core samples, in contrast to the other variables. Specific sampling techniques are employed for forest floors, peat soils, and fine-textured mineral and stony soils. The recommended laboratory methods are predominantly based on International Organization for Standardization methods. Results from the second European forest soil survey are presented to demonstrate the usefulness and implementation of the described methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is ample evidence that current concentrations of tropospheric ozone (O3) cause negative effects on plants. The present chapter describes a systematic and statistical sound way of monitoring visible injury at the European intensive monitoring plots that may allow detecting spatial and temporal trends on a national or transnational scale. The extended database of monitoring data from different forest ecosystems in more than 15 European countries and covering the past 10 years provides a solid basis for O3 risk assessment. In combination with the current assessment of O3 visible injury on forest plants that are grown under natural field conditions, further, long-term studies of physiological measurements are needed to gain a better understanding of the complex interactions between plants and atmosphere, in particular, when considering climate change that may alter the risk of O3 for our forests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaseous air pollutants can have an impact on forest ecosystems inducing visible injury in sensitive species and potentially affecting tree growth, health, and species composition. While several methods exist, passive (diffusive) samplers have been widely used for measuring air pollutants in forest areas, representing a simple, cost-effective method that does not require power supply. In Europe, passive sampling is the principal method used within the intensive monitoring plots of ICP Forests since 2000 and has been proven to provide results comparable to those obtained by conventional monitors. Guidelines for using passive samplers in forest ecosystems and examples of results are provided.

Book Air Quality Management

Download or read book Air Quality Management written by Suresh T. Nesaratnam and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to accompany the new Open University course in Environmental Monitoring and Protection, this is one of four new titles which will equip the reader with the tools to undertake Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs). Used in planning, decision-making and management, EIAs review both the theoretical principles and environmental considerations of engineering and environmental projects to help steer fundamental legislation in the right direction. Air Quality Management begins with an introduction to the atmosphere around us and the units of concentration. It then discusses the importance of meteorology and the part it plays in air quality, before detailing the main types of air pollutants, their sources, and their effects on humans and their environments. Further chapters discuss measurement technologies and systems, as well as a selection of control and elimination methods. Finally, the book details methods of modelling atmospheric dispersion.
