Download or read book Breeding Field Crops written by John M. Poehlman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While preparing the first edition of this textbook I attended an extension short course on writing agricultural publications. The message I remember was "select your audience and write to it. " There has never been any doubt about the audience for which this textbook was written, the introductory course in crop breeding. In addition, it has become a widely used reference for the graduate plant-breeding student and the practicing plant breeder. In its prepa ration, particular attention has been given to advances in plant-breeding theo ry and their utility in plant-breeding practice. The blend of the theoretical with the practical has set this book apart from other plant-breeding textbooks. The basic structure and the objectives of the earlier editions remain un changed. These objectives are (1) to review essential features of plant re production, Mendelian genetic principles, and related genetic developments applicable in plant-breeding practice; (2) to describe and evaluate established and new plant-breeding procedures and techniques, and (3) to discuss plant breeding objectives with emphasis on the importance of proper choice of objec tive for achieving success in variety development. Because plant-breeding activities are normally organized around specific crops, there are chapters describing breeding procedures and objectives for the major crop plants; the crops were chosen for their economic importance or diversity in breeding sys tems. These chapters provide a broad overview of the kinds of problems with which the breeder must cope.

Book Biotic Diversity and Germplasm Preservation Global Imperatives

Download or read book Biotic Diversity and Germplasm Preservation Global Imperatives written by Lloyd Knutson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topics for the Beltsville Symposia are selected to highlight specific areas of research and science policy that are of concern to scientists in the Beltsville Area as well as to the general scientific community. Each sympo sium in the series is structured to provide a realistic appraisal of current findings, research progress, and relevant policy issues within the constraints established by the organizing committee. Thus, the presentations and dis cussions that have marked these symposia have had a strong appeal to the broad community of scientists. Knowledge of the diversity of living organisms is still quite limited. Since the time of Linnaeus, about 1.7 million species have been described. The actual number has been estimated between 5-50 million. Many species, land races, and strains are vanishing. Clearly, the world's scientific institutions are inadequately equipped to attain sufficient knowledge of a significant fraction of the diverse living forms. Also, efforts in the collection and preservation of germplasm of plants and animals urgently need to be strengthened. These mattes are critically important to future generations. This symposium addresses vital concerns of biotic diversity and germ plasm preservation from diverse perspectives. Many of the parts provide concrete recommendations for action, and they call attention to areas of research that must be pursued with intensity.

Download or read book Rice written by Bor S. Luh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice is one of the principal cereals used by the world's inhabitants. The hope for improved nourishment of the world's population depends on the development of better rice varieties and improved methods for rice production and utilization. During the past four decades, interest in rice research and production has increased in many countries. The development of new and better varieties by the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines and other rice research institutes has stimulated numerous research stations to test the performance of these varieties in many countries under different climates, soil properties, cultural practices, and environmental conditions. The methods of harvesting, handling, drying, and milling rough rice have improved as a result of research efforts by the engineers and the rice milling industries. The first edition of Rice: Production and Utilization was published in 1980. This second edition presents the recent developments and progress made by the researchers, the industries, and various experiment stations. Because of the large amounts of literature available in recent years on rice production and utilization, this edition is divided into two volumes, Volume 1: Production and Volume II: Utilization. It is hoped that the books will be useful to rice researchers, processors, and people interested in rice production and utilization. Those studying v vi PREFACE the agronomy of rice plants, especially the genetics, breeding, cultivation, diseases, and insects that attack both the rice plant and the stored grain, will find this edition helpful in their search for new knowledge.
