Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Photo-Topographic Methods and Instruments: Topography Topography is that branch Of surveying which pictures the shape of the outer visible surface of the earth, in reduced scale, as a horizontal projection, yet showing the relative positions of points of the terrene also in the vertical sense. It is, therefore, supplementary to geodesy in representing areas of the earth's surface, including all the necessary details and changes in the terrene, by means of instrumental measurements made in the field. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Topographical Drawing The following pages have been prepared to meet, and in some degree to supply, the demand for practical instruction in Topographical Drawing. The great activity which prevails in regard to Internal Improvements, is constantly calling into the field numbers of young Engineers; and already many instructive works have been addressed to them on almost every detail connected with their profession, except map-making. The design of this little manual is, to be a practical assistant and office com panion, to be consulted on all matters connected with Topographical Drawing, from the first sketch of a preliminary survey, to the complete map. Its scope is limited to field and office drawing, and nothing else is treated of, but What relates to, or is illustrative of, those departments of Topography. Book The Topographer His Instruments and Methods

Download or read book The Topographer His Instruments and Methods written by Lewis M. Haupt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Topographer, His Instruments and Methods: Designed for the Use of Students, Amateur Topographers, Surveyors, Engineers, and All Persons Interested in the Location and Construction of Works Based Upon Topography The recent large and growing demand for topographers, reveals a void in this department of engineering believed to arise from inefficient instruction in this direction. In fact, there is found to exist, strange as it may appear, no publication laying special stress upon the practical duties and requirements, as well as the theoretical qualifications of the topographical engineer. Success has, heretofore, only been attainable from the study of standard works on surveying, in connection with others treating of the drawings, and a third series on military reconnaissances, supplemented largely by actual experience in the field. It has been the author's aim, therefore, to prepare a compact manual of practical value to the embryo topographer, freed from all information so readily obtainable from ordinary sources, and containing in condensed form, a complete course for the guidance of the amateur. The latest improvements in instruments are mentioned, with their numerous time and labor-saving devices; the practical limits of error are given for the various instruments in use, as determined by the scale of the map and character of the survey; the forms of record are clearly shown for all classes of work; the corrections and reductions given with a resume of the computations and formulas, all followed by a general outline of some of the numerous applications that may be made of this important study. Among the special features of the work may be mentioned the section (23) on barometric hypsometry, in chapter II, prepared by Mr. Ashburner, Geologist in Charge of the Anthracite Regions, Pa., which the author desires gratefully to acknowledge. Book Topographical Surveying and Sketching Classic Reprint

Download or read book Topographical Surveying and Sketching Classic Reprint written by Thomas H. Rees and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Topographical Surveying and Sketching This text book was, for the most part, originally prepared in the form of lectures and pamphlets for the instruction of student officers of the U. S. Army Service Schools at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and it has had the test of several years of use criticism and correction by a most intelligent body Of instructors and students. In Surveying no departure from the regular and recog nized methods has been attempted. Indeed, at this time, it would be difficult to add anything new or original to the many excellent text books on this subject. Attention is invited, however, to the treatment herein presented Of the adjustments of instruments, particularly with reference to the level tube to the marking Of the stadia rod which automatically applies the correction for the constant of the instrument; to the methods of applying latitudes and departures in reducing and plotting a survey and in computing areas; and to the methods of resection with the plane table. Book A Manual of Field and Office Methods

Download or read book A Manual of Field and Office Methods written by William D. Pence and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Field and Office Methods: For the Use of Students in Surveying In preparing this manual the following points have been kept especially in view: (1) To provide a simple and comprehensive text designed to anticipate and supplement, rather than replace, the usual elaborate treatise. (2) To bring the student into immediate familiarity with approved surveying methods. (3) To cultivate the student's skill in the rare arts of keeping good field notes and making reliable calculations. It is believed that the discussions of the different instruments, their use and theory, at the beginning of the several chapters is unusually simple, especially in the relations of the elementary lines. The several series of practice problems at the conclusion of the respective chapters are arranged so as to give the student familiarity with the use of the instrument before taking up its theory and adjustments, this order being more effective than the reverse. The interest of the student may be stimulated and his gain in skill promoted by giving him practice with level and transit very early in the the course, after which the scope of the work may be much more flexible both for student and instructor. Since the list of problems is more extended than can be covered in the time usually available for surveying field practice, some range is permitted in the choice of work from year to year and under varying local conditions. By using some discrimination in selecting the more important problems for actual field work, the others may be covered sufficiently by class room discussions. The consistent treatment of errors of surveying receives attention throughout the book. The methods of work both in the field and office are designed to reveal and, as far as possible, to eliminate blunders and errors, and the tests of precision are borrowed from the most rational current practice. The distribution of residual errors falling within the permissible limits likewise receives due consideration.
