Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Russian Commercial Correspondence The present manual has been compiled with a view to supplying a deficiency that has hitherto existed in English commercial literature. Bearing in mind that the phraseology of Russian Commercial Correspondence is bound to present greater difficulties to the English student than that of any other European language - the study of Russian in this country having only recently been taken up seriously - I have made every endeavour to treat this side of the subject of the manual as thoroughly as possible. Besides the section on Phraseology (Section I.), where a variety of examples of general phraseology of Russian Commercial Correspondence is given with a parallel English translation, in the section treating on the Construction of a Russian business letter (Section IV.) the most up-to-date Russian commercial expressions in current use have been so classified and arranged as to enable the student to acquire a thorough proficiency in the use of the phraseology of any given section of Russian Commercial Correspondence. This section is also provided with a parallel English translation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is obviously impossible in so small a compass to offer a letter on every circumstances of business life, but useful examples of every-day commercial letters have been prepared as correct models of style. The matters with which trade is concerned have been divided into appropriate sections, a selection has been made from amongst the topics of correspondence that most frequently occur under each section, and letters have been specially written upon them such as the correspondent may be called upon to write at any moment. Most of the sections are preceded by a sufficient number of isolated phrases suited to the topic in hand, by the help of which any ordinary letter may be readily put together; the writer can thus obtain facility in expressing commercial ideas in various suitable forms. In addition the alphabetical list of commercial abbreviations, and the tables of money, weights and measures, etc., complete the equipment for efficient and successful work, and will enable the business man to make his own communications perfectly clear and intelligible to his foreign clients, and to comprehend those he receives from abroad. Book Manual of Business Correspondence and English Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Business Correspondence and English Of grammar, the essential parts, it not the whole, are etymology and syntax. For orthography relates to the mere arrangement of letters for the arbitrary representation of certain sounds, and prosody to the aesthe tic use of language. And, if prosody is a part of grammar, why should the latter not include rhetoric, and even elocution In fact, grammar was long regarded as including all that concerns the structure and the relations Of language and a grammarian among the ancients was one who was versed, not only in language, but in poetry, history, and rhe toric, and who, generally, lectured or wrote upon those branches of literature. But it seems to me that in the usage of intelligent people the English word grammar relates only to the laws which govern the significant forms of words, and the construction Of the sentence. Thus, if we find extraordinary spelled igstrammg, or hear suggest pronounced saiieet, we do not call these lapses false grammar; but it we hear, She was him, but he wasn't hem, which violates true etymology, or, He done it good, which is incorrect syntax, these we do call false grammar. Etymology, which relates to the significant forms of words, and syntax, the rules of which govern their arrangement, are, then, from our point of view, the great essentials, if not the whole, of grammar. - R.
