Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of drug action has benefitted greatly from the development and use of in vivo model systems. In model systems, manipulations and observations can be more rigorously controlled and screens of novel therapeutic agents can be more safely conducted. No single model system provides all of the possible advantages. At one end, mammalian models al

Book Planarian Regeneration

Download or read book Planarian Regeneration written by H. V. Brøndsted and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planarian Regeneration deals with regeneration problems including embryogenesis and morphogenesis. The book compares the principles involved in the regeneration processes with those in ontogenesis from the egg. The author also reviews the works of Thomas H. Morgan and Charles M. Child which became the basis for systematic scientific investigation of regeneration. The head regenerates vigorously, with a faster rate behind the eyes, then at various levels along the longitudinal axis of the planarian body. A time-graded regeneration includes inhibitory forces and some genetic codes that determine such rate. The time-graded field has been proven by transplantation experiments; the author addresses the morphological structure to which biochemical factors or processes determine the different rate of regeneration. He notes that the nervous system conforms to these processes as shown by studies of Lender and Klein (1961). The author suggests that the study of regeneration in planarians should involve time considerations quantitatively to explain some substance, if any, from the nervous system that activates the cytoplasm of neoblasts, and then the genome. This book will prove valuable for zoologists and researchers in genetics, biochemistry or molecular biology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The First Brain is a discussion of how planarians have been used in neuropharmacology, and what role they have played in scientific developments that have a high impact on our culture. Planarians have been the animal models for research in drug addiction, antidepressant development, and various other topics in biology, neurobiology, and even zoology. Pagán uses these flatworms as a framework to explore the history of biological research. The book provides accessible background information on how biomedical research is impacted by evolution, and defines neurobiology and neuropharmacology in ways that are easy to understand. At the same time, Pagán provides enough detail for the book to useful for scientists working in various subsections of biology.

In this book, the editors and contributors have brought together contemporary Russian experimental data on the behavior of various invertebrates including crustaceans, insects, and mollusks. The book should be useful for those interested in acquiring a working knowledge of the behavioral techniques, data, issues and history of Russian studies of invertebrate behavior. It will also be of interest to those studying the history of behavioral science in Russia.

Book Experimental Psychology Quantitative experiments pt 1 Students manual pt 2 Instructor s manual

Download or read book Experimental Psychology Quantitative experiments pt 1 Students manual pt 2 Instructor s manual written by Edward Bradford Titchener and published by . This book was released on 1905 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general purpose with which this book has been written is sufficiently indicated by its title. I have selected a number of the 'classical' experiments of Experimental Psychology, and have tried to present them in such a way that their performance shall have a real disciplinary value for the undergraduate student. Within this general purpose, my aim has been two-fold. I have sought to show, in the first place, that psychology is above the laboratory: that we employ our instruments of precision not for their own sake, but solely because they help us to a refined and more accurate introspection. And secondly, just as in my Outline of Psychology and Primer of Psychology I gave the results of experimentation a prominent place in the psychological system, so here I have treated the selected experiments not as separate exercises, but as points of departure for systematic discussion. Book Experimental Psychology a Manual of Laboratory Practice

Download or read book Experimental Psychology a Manual of Laboratory Practice written by Edward Bradford Titchener and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Psychology a Manual of Laboratory Practice, Vol. 1 The general purpose with which this book has been written is sufficiently indicated by its title. I have selected a number of the 'classical' experiments of Experimental Psychology, and have tried to present them in such a way that their performance shall have a real disciplinary value for the undergraduate student. Within this general purpose, my aim has been twofold. I hope that the book may find its sphere of usefulness. I sorely felt the need of some such guide when I entered the Leipzig laboratory, and I have felt it as sorely throughout my teaching experience. It is needless to add that, although eight years have gone to its making, the Manual falls lamentably short of its ideal. A book in conception is a perfect piece of workmanship: the book that leaves the author's hands is but a rough approximation to the first design. My greatest debt, here as elsewhere, is to Wundt. I was impelled towards experimental psychology by dissatisfaction with the logical constructions of the English school; and it was Wundt who taught me the essential lesson of systematic introspection.
