There is presented a variety of exercises, some of them advanced in character, that will cover the topics capable of laboratory illustration usually presented in a course in physical geography. For such classes as cannot use the entire "Manual," the author suggests a selected list of exercises which are starred. Most of the exercises can be used in a different order from that given by omitting the references to other exercises. Some of the exercises and their order of presentation may require explanation. Considerable attention is given to elementary principles of mathematical geography. Many students of this phase of the science seem to have a vocabulary rather than an understanding of it. For example, rather few students know precisely why it is colder in winter than in summer, or why the seasons change. The author would urge thorough drill in these elementary principles and in the elementary facts of insolation. The other class of manuals presumes too much on the previous knowledge and experience of the pupil for the early years of the school. This gap between the two kinds of manuals appears to be filled better by Professor Merrill's book than by any other that I have seen. It likewise is wider in its scope and covers the Whole field of Physical Geography more thoroughly than any other. It is intended that the pages of questions and directions be bound with the answer papers in the notebook. In some exercises where the answers are short, blank spaces are left on the printed page that the answers may be written immediately after the questions. The loose leaf plan of binding gives Opportunity not only for the omission of exercises not needed, but also for the inser tion of such other exercises as any teacher may choose to give. To the same end, and also that the exercises may be taken in the order in which the topics are studied, the exercises are not numbered. Reference may be made to them by the page numbers at the bottom of the page. Pupils should pre serve all their papers, and at the end of the course arrange them in order, number the pages at the top, and write on the Table of Contents sheet (pp. 191, 192) the number, name, and pages of each exercise. The teacher will probably wish to examine and comment on each exercise as soon as it is done. The binding margin is a convenient place for marks, and also for the pupil's name, but the pupil must be careful not to let his writing run into this margin. Some of the exercises require heat, water, and considerable apparatus - not always to be had at each pupil's desk. It is suggested that such exercises be assigned, the day before they are to be done, to several pupils, who shall have the preparations complete, and perform the experiments in the presence of_the class. All members of the class should then write up the exercise. Most of the exercises have questions at the end called Advanced. These questions are usually more difficult than those preced ing, and are intended for the rapid workers who finish the main questions before the majority of the class are through.
