This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Physical Geography and Institutions of the State of Iowa Every teacher knows how little any of our school books contain concerning the state in which we live, and that the little they do contain is often erroneous. The necessity for instructing our youth in relation to the physical character, resources, history, government, and institutions of the state, is too apparent to need comment. This little book is intended to meet that great want. I was induced to write it by the urgent request of some of my former pupils, who now occupy leading educational positions in Iowa, and also in compliance with a resolution of request by a convention of principals and superintendents of schools that met in Ottumwa, in January, 1873. Hints to Teachers. Every school room should have a good sectional map of the state hung where the scholars can see it constantly, and study it at proper times. It is necessary to have such a map in connection with the study of this book, because the one accompanying it is too small for the purpose. Such a map is especially necessary in studying chapters II., III., and IV., of Part First. Before commencing the study of the book, the class should be instructed by the teacher in at least the outlines of the geography of the state. Each pupil should become familiar with the name and position of each of the rivers, the names of the principal cities, and their location, and many other matters that the teacher will readily see the necessity for. Indeed, the book is so written as to presuppose some knowledge of this kind on the part of the pupil. Especial care has been taken to avoid error, but probably without entire success. It is very certain, too, that changes will be made from time to time in the laws and regulations explained and referred to, especially in Part Second. The teacher should be watchful in this respect, and be able to make any correction that may become necessary. The questions accompanying the text are intended merely to aid the teacher in preparing the daily lessons. They embrace only a small part of the questions that will naturally arise during the recitations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Iowa State Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Iowa State Geography Classic Reprint written by Alison E. Aitchison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iowa State Geography A clear conception of the plan and purpose of this book will save worry and unnecessary work on the part of both the pupils and the teacher. It has been customary to follow the regular textbooks in geography with a brief state supplement made up of salient unrelated facts - a sort of compendium of information for the pupil who had completed his regular course in geography. This book is in no sense a supplement. On the contrary, it is designed to be used as a separate text in the intermediate grades. Due allowance being made for local variations in the course of study, it is now generally conceded that this sort of state study should precede the study of the Central Plains, of which Iowa is a part, and the sectional study of the United States. This text therefore begins with the home region and may be followed by closely related larger units. It is taken for granted that the pupil knows how to read the globe and the map of North America; that he can follow meridians and parallels and can understand the indications of highlands and lowlands on the map. Necessary maps for reference are included, but it is the aim in this study to give the child usable knowledge of his im mediate environment and to develop his ability to interpret properly as many usable related facts as can be presented. Teachers have complained that it is difficult to find proper usable material. Much that is available has been written for adults and is beyond the ability of the child to understand. It is the purpose of this book, therefore, to furnish proper material. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dodge's Geography of Iowa, Vol. 1 In a special text-book devoted to one state or group of states we can learn more about our own region, its important surface features, its climate, the occupations of its people, its products, its local commerce, its history, its chief cities, and many other features of great interest to us. Hence we need to make a special study of our home locality after we have studied the larger region Of which it is an important part. A local geography is not only valuable for study in school that we may know well the region about us, but it is valuable also as a reference volume to which we can refer for facts about our own state in our homes whenever in our reading or conversation some question arises concerning our own state which needs to be answered at once. In this text-book the surface features, the climate, the soil and other natural resources which determine the occupations of the people are studied first because they are the large features which determine the distribution and success of industries. One of the great lessons the student learns in geography is Man's absolute dependence upon Nature for his existence. In Iowa, as in other regions, topography and climate pointed out the path of development that communities must follow in order to make sure their existence within its borders. In the pages that follow, the student finds traced the fundamental conditions that have moulded Iowa life. After these come the historical events that are landmarks in the growth of the state, and then the study of the industrial and commercial features is taken up. To these, which explain the reasons for the development and growth of the larger cities, and which show us why our own region is important to the country as a whole, careful attention has been given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grasses of Iowa: The Descriptive and Geographical Study of the Grasses of Iowa Several years have elapsed since Part I, Bulletin I, of the Grasses of Iowa was published. Part I, naturally, covered the general, biological, chemical and feeding problems con nected with the grasses of the state. When that work was being prepared it was thought possible to bring all this material together into one volume. As the work progressed, however, it seemed desirable to present the matter in two parts: Part I deal ing with the general biology, and Part II with the descriptive and geographical study of the grasses of Iowa. After many delays the work of printing Part II was begun early in January. I am greatly indebted to Miss Charlotte M. King for many of the drawings prepared expressly for this work by her; also for her help in connection with synonymy. To Mr. R. E. Buchanan and Miss Estelle D. Fogel I am indebted for careful proof-reading and other assistance. Mr. Buchanan and Miss Fogel prepared the index, which is unusually complete. For clerical assistance I am indebted to Miss Mae Combs, Miss J en nie Wharton and Miss Helen Dickerson. To Mr. T. E. Savage I am greatly indebted for his unfailing kindness in looking after the many details of arrangement of subject-matter. I wish, also, to express my thanks to the many friends who have assisted by their contributions of grass material from all parts of the state for use in determining distribution.
