The two sets communicate and terminate in the bronchial lymph glands. The m'rz'es are derived from the pulmonary plexuses which are formed by the pneunnogastric nerves and branches from the sympathetic system. The fibres possess ganglia, and accompany the branching bronchial tubes. Experiment 126. Stain and mount a section of the lung. Examine and notice the alveoli, the fibrous septa between the alveoli, and sections of bronchioles, andiblood-vessels. Look for the lining cells of the alveoli and of the bronchioles. Sketch. If the section includes a bronchial tube, study its structure and sketch it. Exp, 127. Stain a section of the lung with silver nitrate. Look for the outlines of the lining cells; also stomata and stigmata. Exp. 128. Mount a section of an injected lung. Examine and notice the capillary network around the alveoli. Exp. 129. Open the thorax of a curarized or pithed frog, being careful.not to injure the lungs. Notice the lungs distended with air; the air sacs and the capillary network of vessels. If necessary use an ordinary hand lens. CHAPTER XII. THE SKIN AND ITS APPENDAGES. The skin is divided into two zones, an outer zone, termed the cuticle or epiderm1's; an inner zone, termed the dermis, cutis vera (true skin), or corium. The epidermis is composed of stratified squamous epithelium, modified to withstand the influence of the atmosphere and violence, acting as a covering for the protection of the underlying dermis. On account of the modification of the epithelium, the epidermis is divided into layers or strata. The dermis is also divided into strata, the division depending upon the disposition of...

Book A Manual of Practical Normal Histology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Practical Normal Histology Classic Reprint written by Theophil Mitchell Prudden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Normal Histology The full course for classes in Normal Histology in this laboratory comprises forty lessons, of from one and a half to two hours each. Students are furnished with microscopes, reagents, and all necessary apparatus, with the exception of razors, slides, cover-glasses, and boxes for the preservation of specimens. So little time is usually at the disposal of medical students for collateral reading, and so necessary is it to occupy as little of the laboratory time as possible in oral descriptions of tissues and methods, that these notes have been prepared with the expectation that students will anticipate each lesson by reading beforehand the brief section devoted to its theme, and thus be ready to commence the practical work of the lesson hour without loss of time. It is not to be expected that epitomized descriptions of structures as elaborate as are many of those with which we have to deal in histology, will be in all cases perfectly clear and intelligible without the aid of figures; but the actual specimens prepared, and the sketches from them which are made in the laboratory by the students themselves, will make good, it is hoped, the lack of illustration in the text. There are many points in this as in every developing science which are still unsettled - opinion in regard to them changing or being modified as new facts and investigations are recorded. These have been treated, for the most part, very briefly in the text, it being left for the supplementary oral instruction to enlarge upon and explain them as the light thrown upon each by new researches may seem to require. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Histology For some years past there has been a general demand among the members of our profession for a manual of Histology, summarizing, in concise and plain language, our present knowledge in this fundamental branch of medicine. It is true many books have been written on the subject, but their great brevity, on the one hand, or an unnecessary diffuseness on the other, have prevented them from meeting with acceptance at the hands of physicians and students. In the one class belong the little handbooks of Rutherford and Schaefer, which have done much to simplify and therefore popularize histology, but they were intended for beginners, and especially students doing class-work under the laboratory system now so much in vogue. But both physician and student need something of wider scope, and they have been compelled to turn to Klein Smith, & Stricker, or Frey, though no one of these excellent works is thoroughly adapted to their wants. Apart from the expense of the two former, they all are deficient in matters relating to human histology. The practical experience of a teacher made it evident also that the volume to fill such an obvious gap should take the form of a text-book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Histology The primary aim of the writer in the preparation of these pages has been to give to the student of medicine a text book of histology for use in connection with practical laboratory instruction, and especially to furnish to the instructor of histology a satisfactory manual for classroom teaching. With these objects in view, the text has been made as concise as possible consistent with clearness, and the writer has attempted to make the more essential elements stand out somewhat from the necessarily accompanying details. It has been impossible to accomplish this without some sacrifice of uniformity of treatment and of logical sequence. This is especially noticeable in the chapter on the nervous system, which has been made much fuller and more "practical" than is usual. The author's reason for the method of treatment there adopted and for the considerable amount of anatomy which this chapter contains being the apparent success the method has met with in the teaching of this always difficult subject to students. The chapter on general technic is intended to furnish the student with only the more essential laboratory methods. For special and more elaborate methods the student is referred to the special works on technic mentioned at the close of the chapter. The special technic given in connection with the different tissues and organs is in most cases such as can be conveniently used for the preparation of class sections. The original illustrations are from drawings by Mr. A. M. Miller, to whom the writer is greatly indebted for his careful and accurate work. The uselessness of redrawing perfectly satisfactory illustrations has led the writer to borrow freely from various sources, each cut being duly accredited to the work from which it has been taken.
