Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Munson Shorthand It was the first to abandon the corresponding style of writing and -to teach but one form for the amanuensis and the court reporter. This one change in the method of presentation, apart from all other improvements which have been made, has saved an immense amount of time and labor 011 the part of learners. The student learns at first the best form for every word and phrase, instead of being taught one form and afterwards having the double task of forgetting that form and learning a new one for the same word or phrase. The method of adding hooks has also been much simplified. The old and cumbersome method of reversing certain stems when hooks are added has been abandoned, and every stem has been made subject to the same rules as regards the joining of hooks, circles and loops, as well as halving and doubling. Barrett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Principles, Word-Signs, Contractions, and Phrases of the Munson-Barrett System of Shorthand No system of shorthand ever invented has stood the test in every possible application of its use as has the Munson. It is acknowledged to be the standard system. Its reputation is world-wide. While it is one of the oldest systems, it is, through revisions, the most modern. We challenge any author of a short hand text-book to show a system and a book in favorable comparison With ours in point of brevity of rules, arrangement of lessons, and general completeness. Our book contains no unnecessary matter for the sake of size. The System is concise and complete in its rules and outlines. Dement, in a personal letter to Mr. Dougherty, reiterates his previous statements in regard to Shorthand speed. It does not come from, but is retarded by a multiplie ity of arbitrary forms. So long as we work from principle with which we are entirely familiar, the mind works quickly and with as much accuracy as our mastery of the princi ples permits; but when seeking arbitrary the mind must search for a particular symbol. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from McEwan's Easy Shorthand: The Wonder Manual Ninety per cent of shorthand writers are incompetent. Even that astonishing percentage would be higher but for those wise teachers who know the value of geo metric and shaded shorthand too well to be misled into the use of light line and one slope systems. To a certain extent I am responsible for the early adoption of that stenographic leper, one -slope, light line, non-position shorthand. In the eighties in my school. In London I introduced a then new style of shorthand that seemed to be very easy to learn. I adopted it on condition that certain improvements were made. As the result of the immediate enormous sale induced by my recommendation the printing presses were kept working night and day; they could not be stopped long enough for my improvements to be inserted, and, ex cept in my own school, they were never actually put into practice. Book The Manual of Natural Shorthand

Download or read book The Manual of Natural Shorthand written by August Mengelkamp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manual of Natural Shorthand: Designed for Class or Self-Instruction Another point of greatest importance is that of the assignment of the shorthand characters to individual let ters. Anyone conversant with other connective vowel systems, will have observed that the simplest characters have not always been assigned to the most frequent let ters, but to such letters or rather, sounds, as insure the most facile combinations. In other words: the value of a stenographic character is determined not so much by its frequency, as by its combination with other letters. It is a principle that underlies the construction of every connective vowel system; it is a problem that can be solved only after years of arduous labor and experi ments. The most important consonants with reference to combination are t, d, r, l, and w. In Natural Shorthand, t and d not only readily join with all vowel strokes, but medially and finally connect with consonant and vowel strokes, and that with a single effort of the hand. This is a feature characteristic with Natural Shorthand only, and unhesitatingly and truthfully we put it forth as the most logical and successful solution of the Lengthening Principle in the history of English Shorthand. It more than compensates for the so-called Blends and Double Consonants of other systems, which because of their vague -and unsettled character, we do not consider a desideratum in modern shorthand writing. Book A Complete Manual of the Brief System of Shorthand

Download or read book A Complete Manual of the Brief System of Shorthand written by George Edwin Dougherty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Manual of the Brief System of Shorthand: Arranged for Self-Instruction and for Schools None but those who have had experience in this line can appreciate the amount of work and care required to prepare a Shorthand text book. The author himself did not realize what a task it was when be commenced it. A considerable portion of the time during the past eight months he has devoted to the preparation of this volume. Even after the matter had been definitely arranged, the work of preparing the copy for the engravers and printers, and of the revising necessary in order to insure accuracy, was so great that in some cases several days time was spent upon a single page. All of the Shorthand plates have been read and re-read carefully a number of times, but in spite of the great pains taken to avoid errors, it will not be surprising if some have still been overlooked. It was expected that this book would be ready for dcliv ery by March lst, and to the many whose advance orders we have had since that time, and before, we desire to offer an apology. We have regretted the delay more than any one else could, but under all the circumstances it has been unavoidable.
