Download or read book A Manual of the Practice of Medicine Classic Reprint written by Frederick Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-17 with total page 994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Practice of Medicine It has never been very satisfactorily determined what is to be called disease, or what are to be called diseases. To say that disease is any divergence from health, or anything that is the opposite of health, opens up the question, What is health I To this the answer is: A perfect structure of all the organs or tissues, with a perfect performance of all their functions; and, in the broadest sense, any alteration of structure or function may be called disease. But some special cases have to be considered. A distinction is commonly drawn between injury and disease; but the inflammation which so often results from injury is disease of structure and function, and although the immediate effects of injuries are not generally spoken of as diseases, remote troubles sometimes occur which are so classed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Medicine Advantage has been taken Of the demand for a new edition Of this Manual to subject the book to a thorough revision from beginning to end, SO as to bring it into line anew with the most recent sound teaching. A good deal Of additional matter has been introduced, with the result that the new edition is some what larger than its predecessor. This is due partly to ad vances in medical science, which have necessitated fresh articles on such subjects as tropical splenomegaly, trypanosomiasis, and piroplasmosis, and partly to'the desire to make the book a still more complete practical guide to the junior practitioner as well as to the student. Two additional illustrations have been introduced, and the figure showing the cortical centres on the lateral aspect Of the hemisphere has been redrawn, so as to represent the most recently accepted teaching. I am indebted to my colleague, Professor Alex. Macphail, for a considerable number Of the illustrations, including all those in colour; to Dr. John W. Findlay for the first reading and part Of the second reading Of the proofs; and to Dr. Findlay and other kind friends for invaluable assistance with the index. Book Wheeler s Handbook of Medicine Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wheeler s Handbook of Medicine Classic Reprint written by William R. Jack and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wheeler's Handbook of Medicine The advances which have taken place in the domain of medicine within the last four years have been so numerous as to call for considerable additions even to so brief a handbook as the present. It would be tedious to enumerate them all, and it must suffice to mention that, with a view to making the volume more complete, a section on Intoxications has been added, and among the Specific Infections many new articles have been devoted to Tropical Diseases, now so extensively studied. The subject of Immunity has also called for notice, and I have very gratefully to acknowledge Professor Robert Muir's kind per mission to make use of the admirable article in Muir and Ritchie's Manual of Bacteriology in preparing my brief synopsis of its main features. All the other articles have been carefully revised, and many of them almost entirely rewritten. So great indeed have been the changes since 1894, the date of the first edition, that little now remains of Dr Wheeler's writing save in the sections upon Symptomatology, and even these have been, in the majority of instances, amplified or extensively modified. His original object, however, is still the object of the book, namely, the correlation of symptoms with the facts of anatomy and physiology, in a volume which does not by its size preclude the possibility of its being used as a companion in the clinical study of disease. My cordial thanks are due to the publishers, and especially to Dr A. Walker, for their helpfulness in the preparation of the volume. Download or read book A Manual of the Practice of Medicine written by A. A. Stevens and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Practice of Medicine: Prepared Especially for Students Pope says, "Half our knowledge we must snatch, not take." If this be true of general knowledge, it is certainly true of the knowledge of medicine as it is taught in the schools of to-day. In view of this fact, there seems to be a real need for books which present their subjects in an assimilable form. At the request of many students the author has written this book with the hope that it may serve as an outline of Practice of Medicine, which shall be enlarged upon by diligent attendance upon lectures and critical observation at the bedside. In its preparation the mtings of the following authors have been freely consulted: Striimpell, Osier, Fagge, Bristowe, Frerichs, Liebermeister, Vierordt, Eichhorst, Wood, Poss, Gowers, Sansom, Henry, Tyson, Pepper, Paul, Murrell, Starr, Hilton, Duhring, Stelwagon, Van Harliugen, Tilbury Fox, Hardaway, Seiler, Cohen, Browne, Jacobi, Bruce, Brunton, Charcot, Dujarden-Beaumetz, Pavy, Mitchell, and Trousseau. Book A Manual of Medicine Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Medicine Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by William Henry Allchin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Manual of Medicine volume 4 by William Henry Allchin explores the technical and nuanced world of medicine and medical practices. Allchin does a fair job of using detail and specifics to illustrate even the most basic concepts for all levels of understanding. With a background in primary medicine, Allchin covers all sorts of systems and diseases in this series, however, this volume specifically covers diseases of the respiratory system and of the circulatory system. The text begins with the general anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system and continues with a detailed account of lung diseases by areas of the respiratory system affected (such as upper, lower, larynx, and lungs). The latter half of the text covers the general anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system as well as the litany of possible diseases including a lengthy examination of cardiovascular disease. The book also takes care to examine not only practice, but also prognosis--stipulating the possible treatment and longevity of patients with different diagnoses. A Manual of Medicine provides the kind of precise information necessary for the diagnostician and interesting to the layman reader. It's a perfect book for individuals interested in both respiratory system and vascular system diseases, those interested in both basic and complex medical practice, and anyone who wants to explore especially historical medicine and medical treatment. This book should not be used in place of a modern medical practitioner however, as modern medicine has moved on considerably since its initial publication. Download or read book Practical Manual of Mental Medicine Classic Reprint written by E. Régis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Manual of Mental Medicine The study of mental disease has within a few years attained an unlooked-for development. Its corps of instruction has been enlarged by the addition of many chairs, and its literature enriched by numerous works, some of which, like the recent volume of Maudsley, view the subject from a philosophical and physiological point of view, while others, like the classic treatises, handle the subject on its systematic side, and still others, intended to familiarize students and practitioners with the elements of mental medicine, take the more modest form of manuals. This work of M. Regis occupies a middle place among these various types. On the one hand it represents the manual, by its condensation of material, its brevity and clearness, and by its order and conciseness, which will be especially appreciated by those who desire to acquire a moderate acquaintance with the subject without devoting to it long and laborious studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Physiology: Text-Book for Students of Medicine In carrying this desire into execution I have endeavored to avoid theories which have not borne the test of time, and such details of methods as are unnecessary for junior students. I do not give any history of how our knowledge has grown to its present stand-point; nor do I mention the names of the authorities upon whose writings my statements depend. I have also omitted the mention of exceptional points, been I find that exceptions are more easily remembered than the main facts from which they difi'er; and, since we must often be content with' the retention of the one or the other, I have tried to insure that it shall be the more important.
