Book Manual of Lithology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Lithology Classic Reprint written by Edward H. Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Lithology The Course in Lithology at the Lehigh University is eminently practical. After a thorough grounding in Crystallography and Mineralogy, the student begins the study of rock-formation. Following the methods employed in the preliminary subjects, the theory and the definitions are first acquired, and afterwards a practical knowledge of the rocks is obtained by the examination of specimens. As the object of the course is to enable the student to classify at sight the more common species, only the macroscopic peculiarities are given. The aim of the writer has been to combine a thorough knowledge of the elementary portion of the subject with a brief account of the principal rocks and a ready method for their determination. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Lithology: Treating of the Principles of the Science, With Special Reference to Megascopic Analysis Bulk analyses of rocks are given in the books on the subject, and rock groups created from chemical differences. The researches of Lang conclusively Show that nothing can she thus based, as the same rock will Show a varying bulk analysis when fresh and weathered, and the same mineral group will vary widely in the components of a bulk analysis; while rocks of varying mineral composition will agree closely in bulk analyses. The rock groups of the future must, therefore, depend more on mineral than chemical composition. While the majority of authorities define an acid rock as one whose bulk analysis shows a certain percentage of silica, Lessing says that it is one that carries a surplus of silica after saturating the bases, no matter how great or small that may be. The terms acid and basic are indefinite terms, and bulk analyses are misleading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Proceedings 1928 Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Proceedings 1928 Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Royal Physical Society Of Edinburgh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-23 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings, 1928, Vol. 3 The balance of the mineralogist and his goniometer have, during those last fifty years, been sadly ignored and over looked by the geologist, who is ever and anon boasting that he studies in the field, and has no faith in the teachings of mere hand specimens in the closet. That this is true, I quote from the first line of the first chapter of the last, and certainly the best book lately published on the subject, namely, J ukes' Manual of Geology, where he states, Lithology, or the study of the mineral structure of rocks, is based on 'mineralogy. In order to understand litho logy, however, eu acquaintance with mineralogy in general, though always useful, is by no means necessary, since the minerals which enter into the composition of rocks are very few compared with the whole number of minerals. But as regards these few minerals, it is their chemical compo sitiou, still more than their physical characters, which we have to regard in their lithological relations. It is there fore absolutely necessary to understand so much of che mical nomenclature and chemical laws, as shall enable us clearly to comprehend the precise meaning of this chemical composition. Book An Users Manual for Computerization of Hydrogeologic Data for a River Alluvium Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Users Manual for Computerization of Hydrogeologic Data for a River Alluvium Classic Reprint written by James W. Naney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Users Manual for Computerization of Hydrogeologic Data for a River Alluvium A system for rapid storage and retrieval of data from a multilayered aquifer based on the hydraulic properties of the aquifer was developed. The manual consists of the data-retrieval system, control-card setups and specifications, lists of variables, formats and source listings for data stor age and retrieval, and graphical illustrations demonstrating how the system works. Data. For the examples were collected in the alluvium of the W ashita River near Chickasha, Okla. These data were processed according to the manual to produce a lithologic cross section, an isopachous map, a specific subdatum map, a distributed test-hole-data map, and a perme ability-distribution map. The system proved capable of storing and re trieving a large volume of layered hydrogeologic data, and it Will have wide geographic application Where hydrogeologic studies are undertaken. The system may also be adapted to other ty15es of materials because it uses numerical coding exclusively to des'eribe the hydrogeologic data to be stored, retrieved, and manipulated. Keywords: computerization of hydrogeologic data, ground water, ground-water storage, ground-water transmissib-ility, hydrogeology, hydrology, lithology, soil permeability.
