Book Manual of Fruit Insects Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Fruit Insects Classic Reprint written by Mark Vernon Slingerland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Fruit Insects For nearly twenty years Professor Slingerland, as Assistant Entomologist of the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station, devoted the greater part of his time to studying the insect problems encountered by the fruit-growers of New York State. The results of some of these studies were published as bulletins of the Station, but a large amount of material remained unpublished. It was the idea of making this material available to other workers and at the same time bringing together in con nected form all the more important known facts concerning the insect enemies of our deciduous fruits, that led Professor Slinger land in the fall of 1908 to begin writing this book. During the few remaining months of his life he worked rapidly, and in spite Of failing health wrote accounts of more than one-half Of the apple insects and some others, mostly scale insects. After Professor Slingerland's death in March, 1909, I collected and preserved the manuscript, thinking that it might be possible to publish it without much additional work. While the treat ment of each insect was complete in itself, the Whole was so dis connected that this plan had to be abandoned. Accordingly, in the summer of 1910 I undertook the task of completing the book, following Professor Slingerland's outline. In doing so, I have made free use of his unpublished notes, and most of the illustra tions are from his photographs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Insects Injurious to Orchard and Bush Fruits: With Means of Prevention and Remedy In the present volume I have endeavoured to collect into a convenient form for reference the most important points of information which we possess regarding the life-histories and habits of the insects of which the attacks are commonly injurious to a serious extent to hardy fruit in this country, together with notes of methods of prevention and remedy which have been found serviceable at a paying rate. Some of the attacks mentioned have long been known of, but there are few if any of these of which we have not gained some additional information during the past few years, and of many of the others we have only lately become possessed of the whole life-history; whilst others, again, have lately shown themselves as perfect scourges (in our present large scale of fruit growing) which even within the last four or five years were wholly unknown to us as fruit pests. In the following pages (as temperatures and weather influences have great effect on insect life and number of yearly broods), I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to give the information from observations in this country sent to myself during the past twenty-one years, and published as received in my successive Annual Reports; these notes being now condensed into a continuous account of each infestation, but as far as possible in the words of the various contributors. Book The Insects Destructive to Fruits Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Insects Destructive to Fruits Classic Reprint written by Mark Vernon Slingerland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Insects Destructive to Fruits Insects are among the most formidable enemies to success ful fruit-culture. The losses occasioned by the plum curculio alone amount to more than a million of dollars annually. Orchardists are sometimes deterred, by the attacks of this in sect, from attempts to raise the apricot, nectarine, peach, and plum; and the market supply of apples and pears is often much disfigured by it. The apple-worm, or codling-moth, is even a more formidable insect pest. New York fruit-growers alone yearly furnish $2, worth of apples and worth of pears to feed this insect; and other similar apple-growing States report nearly as large an annual loss from its ravages. The depredations of many other insect pests, like the apple tree and the peach-tree borers, the canker-worms, the tent caterpillars, the apple maggot, and the pear psylla, each causes annual losses amounting to several hundred thousand dollars. As a general rule those remedial measures are of little value, which attempt merely to repel insects without destroy ing them. Experiments show that rarely is an insect repelled from attacking any part of a plant by the application of odor ous substances, like carbolic acid, tar, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Manual of Fruit Diseases Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Fruit Diseases Classic Reprint written by Lex R. Hesler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Fruit Diseases It is the common opinion of authorities that fruit-growers V.lose millions of dollars annually on account of diseases of their crops. It has been estimated that 75 percent of this loss may be prevented by spraying - the chief method of fruit-disease control. In order to understand and to perform properly the measures of fruit-disease control, it is essential that some knowledge of the cause of the disease in hand be acquired. In recent years scientists and laymen alike have recognized the importance of certain technical details regarding the cause in order to undertake the prevention of these losses. Similarly, the value of other facts must be apprehended, such as the history of a disease, where it originated, with what rapidity the pathogene has spread, the losses it is capable of incurring, and under what conditions these destructive outbreaks (epiphytotics) occur. As evidence that the practicing agriculturists are rapidly becoming acquainted with the value of scientific knowledge regarding diseases of plants, it is only necessary to point to their interest and cooperation in the matter of obtaining accurate information under field conditions. The prejudiced and critical attitude of the grower is now for the most part of no consequence. Little self-protection is now needed by the experimental plant pathologist; the growers attitude is no longer antagonistic, but he is friendly and, what is more encouraging, he seeks with confidence the advice of the phytopathologist. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Insect Enemies of Fruit and Fruit Trees No other portion of the agriculture of our country is at this time receiving so much attention as that devoted to the culture of Fruit. The growing of young trees in nurseries, as an art, has been greatly improved, and the supply of such trees is enormous. Books have been prepared by men of eminent ability and mature experience, giving all necessary information for the management of the orchard; and the fruits that have been proved valuable have been carefully figured and described. Some men are devoting much attention to the improvement of kinds, and with most satisfactory results. Fruits that were highly esteemed a few years ago are now superseded, and amateurs hope to identify their names with better sorts; and why not '3 There seems to be no limit set by nature to improvement in this direction. The Seckel Pear was found growing wild in a hedgerow. Probably the blossom that produced the pear, from the seed of which that tree grew, had been visited by a bee dusty with pollen from another blossom, and thus a germ was fertilized, which in time brought forth this hybrid of such surpassing excellence. The science of Botany teaches us that we can hybridize as well as bees, and improvements in fruits are now brought about as the designs of men rather than as the accidents of insects. Grafting, budding, and the propagation by cuttings give us the means of multiplying these better kinds with a rapidity characteristic of the age. 'but with all these signs of progress, the supply of fruit is far short of the wants of the people. The prices are often extravagant to the consumers, and do not always remunerate the producers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Leaflets on Fungus Pests and Allied Diseases of Fruit Trees Unlike insect pests, which are for the most part more or less clearly understood, there is often a certain mystery in the public mind connected with fungi. Their strange form, sudden appear ance and devastating habits are not readily explainable. To the practical fruit grower painful familiarity with their presence soon robs fungus parasites of any mysterious charm, and, by force of circumstances, he is compelled to study them, if it be only their mode of attacking plants and the best methods of keeping them at bay. Whether, however, the origin and} habits are understood or not, it may not be inadvisable to point out at the commencement of this volume the main outlines of the life of any ordinary fungus.
