Book excerpt: As an introduction to the present book I would like to explain how it was, that I, a commercial nurseryman, became so keenly interested in Conifers and their nomen clature. In August 1924 the Dutch Dendrological Society was founded and at the same time a Committee for Nomenclature of woody plants was set up and I served on this committee as one of the members. Our first activity was to bring the catalogues of the various leading nurserymen in the Netherlands into line with the International Rules of Botanical Nomenclature and also to check their nursery stock. Formerly these catalogues had shown a rather confused nomenclature, nurserymen having usually made use of a variety of inconsistent books as guides in compiling their catalogues. In the course of the work a close co-operation between scientific and practical workers developed. Although I had also fully contributed to the correct naming of hardy shrubs and perennials, 1 was most interested in Conifers. I had tried out several species, had grown a wide choice of garden forms and selected types of particular merit for propagation. My special love for Conifers lead to the publication of my Name-list of Conifers (1937), which was adopted as a standard for varietal names at the International Horticultural Congress in Berlin (1938). Later I prepared my book 'Coniferen, Ephedra en Ginkgo' in the Dutch language (1949); compiling the Conifers cultivated or known to be grown in the Netherlands and Belgium at that time.

The Symposium was an official function of the working party canker diseases (Scleroderris), Subject group S.2.06.02 Division II IUFRO. We wish to express our thanks to the USDA Forest Service, Research and the Canadian Forestry Service for financial support of the program, and SUNY ESF for hosting the Symposium. A major research program was launched in 1977 to study the biology of the European strain as found in North America. Support for this research resulted from spec i a 1 fund ing by the Congress of the United States to the USDA Forest Service, North Central Forest Experiment Station. Most of these funds were released as cooperative research grants to universities in the Lake States and the northeast. Many of the research papers delivered at this Symposium are the direct result of these research grants. While the Symposium deliberately emphasized the North American experience 'with Gremmeniella abietina in order to provide a focus for the meeting, we were anxious that this Symposium would also include studies from other countries.

Book excerpt: Tropical climates, which occur between 23°30'N and S latitude (Jacob 1988), encompass a wide variety of plant communities (Hartshorn 1983, 1988), many of which are diverse in their woody floras. Within this geographic region, temperature and the amount and seasonality of rainfall define habitat types (UNESCO 1978). The F AO has estimated that there 1 are about 19 million km of potentially forested area in the global tropics, of which 58% were estimated to still be in closed forest in the mid-1970s (Sommers 1976; UNESCO 1978). Of this potentially forested region, 42% is categorized as dry forest lifezone, 33% is tropical moist forest, and 25% is wet or rain forest (Lugo 1988). The species diversity of these tropical habitats is very high. Raven (1976, in Mooney 1988) estimated that 65% of the 250,000 or more plant species of the earth are found in tropical regions. Of this floristic assemblage, a large fraction are woody species. In the well-collected tropical moist forest of Barro Colorado Island, Panama, 39. 7% (481 of 1212 species) of the native phanerogams are woody, arborescent species (Croat 1978). Another 21. 9% are woody vines and lianas. Southeast Asian Dipterocarp forests may contain 120-200 species of trees per hectare (Whitmore 1984), and recent surveys in upper Amazonia re corded from 89 to 283 woody species ~ 10 cm dbh per hectare (Gentry 1988). Tropical communities thus represent a global woody flora of significant scope.

Although there are many excellent tissue culture books and manuals available, these are generally strongly biased towards herbacious crops. Consequently, they often do not pay sufficient attention to the problems that specifically apply to in vitro culture of tree species. Culture of the latter often poses problems which are either absent or of lesser significance when culturing herbacious species. When trees in the field are used as explant source, the problems can be especially severe. For example, the physiological condition of the explants is difficult to control because of variation in weather and biotic factors. Furthermore, it is often difficult to obtain explants free of contaminants from field grown trees. Lack of genetic uniformity and maturation are additional problems one often has to deal with when culturing tree cells or tissues. These problems are emphasized in this text. In vitro culture of trees is not viewed in isolation. It is considered in conjunction with breeding, traditional cloning and other common tree improvement techniques. The text discusses theoretical as well as practical aspects of the in vitro culture of trees.
