Book excerpt: The geologic term "Tethys" introduced by Eduard Suess (1893) into science was originally a paleogeographic one. Since its original description it has been used in various ways. One of them is Tethys as a paleo-biogeographic concept. This concept was adopted for IGCP Project 262, Tethyan Cretaceous Correlation. It was proposed by G. Czaszar and Heinz A. Kollmann and has been approved by the IGCP Board in February 1987. The project has its aims primarily in the improvement of the stratigraphic correlation between the heterogenous facies of the Tethyan realm. The requests to paleontology in this programme are of various kinds: The delimitation of the Tethyan realm in space and time needs clear statements on the composition of Tethyan faunal or floral assemblages. Biozones based on various fossil groups have to be established for biostratigraphic correlation. Finally, Tethyan bioprovinces have to be established. These problems have been discussed in a special meeting of the paleontological group of the project which was held on January 25-27, 1988, in Vienna. Papers presented at this meeting are published in this volume.

Discussion of principles and processes is found in complimentary texts, such as Leeder's (1982) Sedimentology: process and product and selected readings in professional journals. This book is not an exhaustive treatise of laboratory techniques and theory. The subject matter includes topics generally covered in courses entitled "Sedimentology" or "Sedimentation". Sandstone and carbonate petrography is commonly given in a separate course. Furthermore, this topic is covered in several current texts. For these reasons I have omitted petrographic methods, with the exception of those applying to heavy minerals. I have included a rather extensive discussion of heavies because this topic is generally lacking in most modern texts. Every course in sedimentology is highly individualistic and material covered varies with the interests, background, and point of view of the instructor. For these reasons some topics presented in this book are not necessarily covered in all courses. Similarly some instructors may find that their favorite topic is missing. I can only hope that this problem is minimal. Several chapters contain precise exercises to be completed by the student. Some must be done in the classroom, where specimens are available for study. Others may be done outside of the classroom.

Book excerpt: An editorial by Wanless (1982), entitled "Sea level is rising - so what?", tells the case of an executive editor of a major city newspaper, who, when confronted with evi dence for a recent sea-level rise, replied: "That just means the ocean is six inches deeper, doesn't it?". Whether his "so what?" attitude was real or put on to dike a threat of sensation, there is at present a wide and deepening interest in ongoing and future global sea-level change. This interest has grown along with the concern over global warming due to increasing levels of C02 and trace gases. A stage has been reached where investigators of climat- sea-level relationships call for long-term measurement programmes for ice-volume changes (using satellite altimetry) and changes in temperature and salinity of the oceans (ther mal expansion). This manual, however, is primarily concerned with sea level changes in the past, mainly since the end of the last glaciation. Its major objective is to help answer the ques tion: "how?", which, of course, is little else but to assist in the gathering of fuel for the burning question: "why?" Good fuel, hopefully, for the less smoke and ashes, and the more heat and light produced by that fire, the better scientists are enabled to develop a quantitative under standing of past, and hence of future, sea-level changes on different spatial and temporal scales.
