Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Bacteriology and Pathology for Nurses This work is the result of several years experience in teaching the subjects of bacteriology and pathology to nurses. It was early discovered that there did not exist any work on these subjects which seemed adapted to the peculiar requirements of the busy nurse in training or in practice. The fact that such a work must of necessity be brief has been recognized, but a constant effort has been maintained to avoid sacrificing accuracy or lucidity for brevity. Considerable space has been devoted to the subjects of infection and immunity and to bacterial and serum therapy, because it was realized that the trained nurse, because of her intimate and continued association with them, is to become the great teacher of the masses in the newer developments in medicine and sanitation, as the physician can never be, and she should, therefore, keep abreast of the times on these subjects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Pathology: Including Bacteriology, the Technic of Postmortems, and Methods of Pathologic Research In presenting to the profession and students of medicine the third edition of this work the author wishes gratefully to acknowledge the cordial reception that was accorded the last edition. Although over twice the size of the first edition, the second was exhausted in nearly the same length of time; it appeared late in the autumn of 1897 and was exhausted in the following year. The pressure of other duties rendered it impossible for the author to give the work the revision that seemed necessary, and therefore it has been out of print for nearly two years. During that time the author has occupied his spare moments in revising, rewriting, and rearranging the subject-matter. A number of the old illustrations have been replaced by new, and many original drawings have been added. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Bacteriology: Clinical and Applied In what may be termed the economy of nature micro organisms are all-important; without them there would be no putrefaction, no decay, and the dead remains of animal and vegetable life would accumulate and encumber the earth, which would become barren for the want of the organic matter originally derived from it, but of which there was no return. In fact the higher plants, and indirectly, therefore, animals also, are dependent for their existence upon the presence of bacteria in the soil, which break up and render assimilable complex substances used as manures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Bacteriology IN the preface to the second edition of this manual the author states that: the purpose of this book is to give in the smallest possible space the facts which a physician must know, with some of those which it is desirable that he should know, and a little of that which he may learn if his needs or inclinations lead him to go further. Download or read book Manual of Bacteriology Classic Reprint written by Robert Muir and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-09 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Bacteriology During the three years which have elapsed since the publication of the previous edition, important additions to knowledge have been made in nearly every department of bacteriological research. We have again endeavoured to incorporate these as fully as possible, having in view our primary object, namely, to supply a Manual for students and practitioners of medicine. It is impossible to refer in detail to the new matter introduced, as this occurs in practically every chapter. It may, however, be mentioned that in dealing with technique, we have introduced a new chapter in which the more recent methods of investigating the properties of serum and allied subjects are described. While it is necessary for students of medicine to have a general know ledge of such subjects, those commencing independent bacterio logical research may benefit from the details given in this department. We have also in the present edition grouped together in a new chapter the pathological conditions with which spirochaetes are associated, but as the biological relationships of these organ isms to kindred forms are still not completely determined, we have retained this chapter in its former position. The present volume is an attempt to supply such a man ual, and at the same time a text-book of bacteriology for students and guide for laboratory work. The descriptions of non-pathogenic bacteria, and of the less important or imperfectly described species of pathogenic bacteria, are given in smaller type.
