Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Ancient Geography: With a Map Showing the Retreat of the 10, 000 Greeks Under Xenophon The work is divided into four books, of which the first, furnishn a brief outline of the gradual exten sion of geographical knowledge among the nations of antiquity, may serve as an introduction to the study, and has been printed in a somewhat smaller type, though it should be borne in mind, that without this intro duction many portions of ancient geography, especially the ideas and allusions of the poets, cannot be under stood. The Space allowed to the description of any particular country or place, has been determined by the more or less important position it occupies in the history of antiquity, so that the south of Europe and western Asia occupy the greater part of the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Classical Manual: An Epitome of Ancient Geography, Greek and Roman Mythology, Antiquities, and Chronology; Chiefly Intended for the Use of Schools Many excellent works have recently issued from the press, which, either separately or in the form of diction aries, treat of the subjects of the following pages: and yet the want of an Epitome has. Been recognized, which would contain, in the compass of a single volume, of small size and moderate price, as much information upon such points as is calculated to elucidate the Greek and Roman authors usually read in the junior forms of our schools. It has been the object of the compiler of the present manual to supply this deficiency by introducing into it such details as are most likely to be useful (indeed much of which is absolutely necessary to the classical student) in so small a space as to admit of its being thoroughly mastered and retained. Although at first the requiaements Of junior forms were chiefly contemplated, yet in the progress of the work so much additional matter has been supplied as, it is hoped, will render it not unacceptable to more advanced students. Book Manual of Ancient Geography and History

Download or read book Manual of Ancient Geography and History written by Wilhelm Pütz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Ancient Geography and History The work of which the present Handbook is a translation, consists of three portions: - a) Outlines of Ancient History. b) Outlines of Medieval History. c) Outlines of Modern History. The whole forms a work of moderate extent, and of great accuracy. The second portion is already in the press, and the Editor cannot but entertain a confident hope that, when the whole work is published, it will have a considerable effect in promoting the study of General History in our Classical Schools. A complete set of Questions upon the Historical portions has been added: but no liberty has been taken with the text in any part except that which relates to the History of the Jews. For this portion, the author is not responsible; for though he has generally been followed, the alterations made were too numerous and too much interwoven with the original matter, to allow of their being distinguished by brackets. A small and cheap, but accurate, Classical Atlas, intended as a Companion to the Editor's "Histories Antique Epitome," is about to be published by Messrs. Rivington. It will be found sufficient for the student of this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Manual of Ancient History written by W. C. Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Ancient History: Containing the Political History, Geographical Position, and Social State of the Principal Nations of Antiquity; Carefully Revised From the Ancient Writers IN bringing out an American edition of this work, the publishers were desirous 1 ct only to furnish a valuable work for general readers. But also to make it in point of size and price as well adapted to the wants of public instruction as they believed it to be in intrinsic merit In complying with their request to revise the work with this view, the present editor has made a few slight curtailments - principally in the first part of the volume of Ancient History - which could be made with out suppressing or in any way distorting or impairing any material fact or statement. In the English edition, all that is to be found relating to the history of the United States amounts to two or three pages, interspersed in the history of England. In the place of these meager notices, the presem editor has appended to the volume of Modern History a distinct and special chapter, giving to the history of the United States its proportion ate place in general history, and to which it is certainly entitled in i work designed for public instruction in this country. He trusts that this sketch will be found to contain a fair and clear view of the leading events of our history. Download or read book A History of Ancient Geography Vol 1 of 2 written by E. H. Bunbury and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Geography, Vol. 1 of 2: Among the Greeks and Romans From the Earliest Ages Till the Fall of the Roman Empire The present work is designed to supply a deficiency, which I have reason to believe has been felt by classical scholars. While there is no want of elementary treatises on ancient geography, and the requirements of the more advanced student are fully answered by the elaborate articles in Dr. Smith's Dictionary of Ancient Geography so far as relates to the details of particular places and countries, it is remarkable that there does not exist in the English language any such historical review of the subject as a whole, as is to be found in the introductions to the works of Mannert, Ukert, and Forbiger. But even these treatises, besides being confined to students who are familiar with the German language, can hardly be said to meet the demands of either the scholar or the geographer at the present day. Ukert's introductory volume was published as far back as 1816, and that of Mannert still earlier, while the more recent work of Forbiger (itself published in 1841) is so disfigured by the accumulation of cumbrous and unnecessary lists of names as to be altogether repulsive to the English reader.
