Todos los módulos fueron desarrollados minuciosamente por expertos en Pediatría, Ginecología, Salud Mental y los estudios basados en el trabajo comunitario. Asimismo, este manual fue elaborado con la finalidad de satisfacer una necesidad esencial en la comunidad, como es el abordaje integral de la depresión perinatal. Durante un año el CHWCMR investigó todos los estudios encaminados a apoyar a la depresión perinatal y se encontró que los abordajes se enfocaban solamente a la madre y no adaptado a la inclusión del padre y la comunidad LGTB. Aunque muchos proyectos en la nación brindan algunos de los recursos que proponemos, los modelos se enfocan en subvenciones y la mayoría termina por falta de soporte económico. Este manual incorpora todos los elementos necesarios para reconocer, referir y apoyar a las personas que viven la depresión perinatal en su viaje de vida, de tal manera que puedan recibir la atención de salud, física, mental y social que necesitan con personas que también ya tomaron ese viaje. Las CHW que sufrieron depresión perinatal, ahora están en las condiciones de ayudar a otros para que puedan tener un embarazo lo más normal o saludable que se pueda, usando un modelo de integración del equipo de salud y la comunidad, donde el factor esencial es la persona que vive con depresión perinatal. Caminado Juntos es un proyecto desarrollado por la Dra. Ponce-González, con el apoyo de 8 profesionales de la salud que poseen una gran experiencia en investigación basada en evidencia de neonatología, ginecología y salud mental y dos CHW, quienes son madres refugiadas que sufrieron depresión perinatal y viven en los EEUU. Este manual es único desde el momento de su desarrollo, porque cuenta con el conocimiento y experiencia de personas que vivieron o viven con depresión perinatal y del personal de atención médica. Muchos médicos y personal de salud, al igual que algunas organizaciones han mitificado que la tristeza durante el embarazo es normal. Sin embargo, eso es un mito, porque la depresión perinatal es una enfermedad del cerebro que afecta la relación de pareja en la crianza de los hijos, que puede tener resultados dañinos tanto para los padres, como para los hijos. Seamos culturalmente humildes, escuchemos y apoyemos a las personas que viven con depresión perinatal a encontrar la ayuda que necesitan, con los recursos que contamos y con un manual que no es rígido, sino flexible que puede adaptarse a tu realidad.
