Book Manual of Geography and Language Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Geography and Language Classic Reprint written by Charles Eben Mann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Geography and Language Although, with most children, much Geographical work may be done earlier, it is thought safer to recommend its formal introduction with the first of the fourth year. It is presumed, however, that all Geographic knowledge required for a proper understanding of - the reading prescribed for the earlier grades, will have received careful attention. This, with us, will include, in the second grade, Stories of the United States, and Big and Little People of Other Lands; in the third grade, Great Americans for Little Americans, Stories of Colonial Children, Seven Little Sisters, and Each and All. The last two are especially used for their Geographical value. To this add the work outlined under Home Geography in this book and it may be safely assumed that pupils will be quite familiar with the meaning and use of globes and maps. This, of course, means not only the finished globe, but also the slated globe which, properly used, has in its use the highest degree of helpfulness. The wall maps, with all the lower grades, should always be hung on the north wall to insure less confusion as to direction. For this reason it is well, some times, to lay the map on the floor and let the children gather round it. They must be led to see that north is not always up and that south is not always down. Let no place of any significance in any lesson be passed without being definitely located both on the map, or globe, and actually in direction and comparative distance from the school room. From what is stated above, it will be seen that third year children will need to understand maps and this envolves, not only relative position, but actual distances; hence, they should learn the meaning of the scale of a map. For this purpose, take some object as the title page of a book, small enough to be outlined in its true measurement, placing all important objects or characters on the outline in proper position, not by guess but by careful measurement. When this is understood, take some object, as the schoolroom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Manual of Modern Geography and History

Download or read book Manual of Modern Geography and History written by Wilhelm Putz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Modern Geography and History The present volume completes the series of Professor Putz's Manuals of Ancient, Mediæval, and Modern Geography and History. Its adaptation to the wants of the student will be found to be no less complete than was to be expected from the former Parts, which have been highly approved by the public, and have been translated into several languages besides the English. The difficulty of compressing within the limits of a single volume the vast amount of historical material furnished by the progress of modern states and nations in power, wealth, science, and literature, will be evident to all on reflection; and they will find occasion to admire the skill and perspicacity of the Author of this Manual, not only in the arrangement, but also in the facts and statements which he has adopted. Book A Manual of Ancient Geography

Download or read book A Manual of Ancient Geography written by Heinrich Kiepert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Ancient Geography Dr. Kiepert's excellent Atlas of Ancient Geography is in use in many of our leading schools, and it may be supposed therefore that the appearance of this translation of his Manual of Ancient Geography will be welcome to English teachers and students. The work has enjoyed a wide circulation in Germany, serving as it does as a kind of historical and physical commentary to the various Atlases of Ancient Geography which have been published by the author during the last thirty years. The arrangement of the book for school purposes excludes any attempt at completeness. Such topographical details as can be obtained from maps are purposely omitted, while names are given in regard to their historical importance, and wherever their preservation from ancient times, in a more or less modified form, serves as a proof of continuity and permanence of population. The translation has been throughout carefully revised by the author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Geography: A Manual for Teachers Geography in the Elementary Schools. - For many years geography has held an honored place in our elementary schools. In most of these schools some part of each school day for a period of several years is devoted to its study. During this time the children are expected to learn about their own country in some detail and less fully about other parts of the earth. On the whole, the fact that the subject has held so prominent a place in school work for so long a time may be taken as evidence of a widespread belief that children ought to know something about the world in which-they live. It can hardly be expected that, in these days of educational experiments, the place and value of this subject would go unchallenged. A few years ago some educational authorities became very critical of the amount of time devoted to it. A few even went so far as to suggest that the study of geography be given up or that it be limited to one or two years in the lower grades of the elementary school. For the greater part, however, criticism of geography as now taught in our schools has not been so destructive and sweeping, and has had to do chiefly with the kind and amount of subject matter taught and with the methods of teaching. Download or read book A Teacher s Manual Geography written by Charles Mcmurry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Teacher's Manual Geography: To Accompany Tarr and McMurry's Series of Geographies Children are already familiar with these home things in a vague, loose way, but we are inclined to overestimate the extent and accuracy of their knowledge. In some special cases they know enough about certain local topics without help from the school; but, generally speaking, children have little accurate knowledge of local industries and phenomena. Even the teachers are found in many cases to be extremely deficient in definite knowledge about such common topics as local directions and topography; weather changes; the dairy, the cultivation of garden vegetables and fruits the work of the farm in caring for crops and farm animals the tools, machines, and processes of the blacksmith, the tinner, the carpenter, and others; the work done in planing-mills, wagon factories, grain elevators, mills, etc. The shipment of fruits, meats, glass ware, and iron products by rail and by water, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
