Embora o conteúdo seja principalmente derivado dos Discursos de Epicteto, não é um resumo dos Discursos, mas sim uma compilação de preceitos práticos, conforme ensinados por ele. Evitando a metafísica, Arriano concentra sua atenção no trabalho de Epicteto aplicando a filosofia à vida diária. Assim, o livro é um manual prático do bem-viver, mostrando o caminho para alcançar a liberdade mental e a felicidade em todas as circunstâncias. A popularidade da obra foi auxiliada pelo movimento do neostoicismo iniciado por Justus Lipsius no século XVI. Outro neostoico, Guillaume du Vair , traduziu o livro para o francês em 1586 e popularizou-o em sua obra La Philosophie morale des Stoiques. No mundo de língua inglesa, vale citar que foi um dos livros que John Harvard legou ao recém-fundado Harvard College em 1638. O trabalho, escrito em um estilo claro e distinto, tornou-o acessível aos leitores sem treinamento formal em filosofia, e havia um grande número de leitores entre jovens e mulheres na Inglaterra. O Manual de Epicteto era um texto escolar comum na Escócia durante o Iluminismo escocês - Adam Smith tinha uma edição de 1670 em sua biblioteca pessoal, adquirida quando era um menino. No final do século 18, o Manual de Epicteto foi atestado e passou a figurar nas bibliotecas pessoais de Benjamin Franklin e Thomas Jefferson, nos EUA. Obra inspiradora, ímpar, provocativa, reflexiva! Book excerpt: Until now, ethicists have said little about the body, limiting their comments on it to remarks made in passing or, at best, devoting a chapter to the subject. Embodied Care is the first work to argue for the body's centrality to care ethics, doing so by analyzing our corporeality at the phenomenological level. It develops the idea that our bodies are central to our morality, paying particular attention to the ways we come to care for one another. Hamington's argues that human bodies are "built to care"; as a result, embodiment must be recognized as a central factor in moral consideration. He takes the reader on an exciting journey from modern care ethics to Merleau-Ponty's philosophy of the body and then to Jane Addams's social activism and philosophy. The ideas in Embodied Care do not lead to yet another competing theory of morality; rather, they progress through theory and case studies to suggest that no theory of morality can be complete without a full consideration of the body.

He may have been a hellenised Roman living in Asia Minor during the late 1st century of our era. The fables are all in one metre and in very good style, humorous and pointed. Some are original. Phaedrus, born in Macedonia, flourished in the early half of the 1st century of our era. Apparently a slave set free by the emperor Augustus, he lived in Italy and began to write Aesopian fables. When he offended Sejanus, a powerful official of the emperor Tiberius, he was punished but not silenced. The fables, in five books, are in lively terse and simple Latin verse not lacking in dignity. They not only amuse and teach but also satirise social and political life in Rome. This edition includes a comprehensive analytical Survey of Greek and Latin fables in the Aesopic tradition, as well as a historical introduction.
