El propietario, responsable o supervisor de una producción agrícola encontrará suficiente información y métodos para evaluar si se aplican los criterios adecuados en su instalación. A su vez quien se inicie en estas técnicas podrá profundizar en esta ciencia y técnica descubriendo las claves y normas para obtener favorables resultados. Los esquemas, figuras y fotografías permitirán entender al lector los fundamentos básicos que completan la descripción de los sistemas y fundamentos que rigen estas técnicas. Miguel Urrestarazu Gavilán es Dr. en Ciencias Biológicas, completa su formación y estudios de ciencias y biología a principio de los años ochenta en la Universidad de Granada, terminando su doctorado en Agricultura Protegida en la Universidad de Almería a principios de los noventa, desde entonces hasta la actualidad ha realizado sus labores de investigación y docencia en sistemas de cultivo sin suelo e hidroponía en la universidad y continuado su labor profesional y docente por prácticamente los cinco continentes. Es autor de múltiples libros, capítulos de libros y artículos científicos de investigación, actividad que se realiza tanto en el plano de divulgación y transferencia al sector productivo, como en revistas de primera fila en el ámbito de la horticultura científica internacional respetuosa con el medio ambiente. Se trata de un autor polifacético que aborda y resuelve tanto los problemas de complejidad científico-técnica como versátil para explicar problemas prácticos difíciles con una didáctica accesible a personas que no están necesariamente iniciadas en el mundo de la hidroponía.

The authors model the subsystems involved in successful greenhouse control using different techniques and show how the models obtained can be exploited for simulation or control design; they suggest ideas for the development of physical and/or black-box models for this purpose. Strategies for the control of climate- and irrigation-related variables are brought forward. The uses of PID control and feedforward compensators, both widely used in commercial tools, are summarized. The benefits of advanced control techniques—event-based, robust, and predictive control, for example—are used to improve on the performance of those basic methods. A hierarchical control architecture is developed governed by a high-level multiobjective optimization approach rather than traditional constrained optimization and artificial intelligence techniques. Reference trajectories are found for diurnal and nocturnal temperatures (climate-related setpoints) and electrical conductivity (fertirrigation-related setpoints). The objectives are to maximize profit, fruit quality, and water-use efficiency, these being encouraged by current international rules. Illustrative practical results selected from those obtained in an industrial greenhouse during the last eight years are shown and described. The text of the book is complemented by the use of illustrations, tables and real examples which are helpful in understanding the material. Modeling and Control of Greenhouse Crop Growth will be of interest to industrial engineers, academic researchers and graduates from agricultural, chemical, and process-control backgrounds.
