Download or read book Mantras of Peace written by Moin Qazi and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in troubled times, in a dangerous and destabilized world that has coarsened our sensibilities and constrained our capacities for goodness. The world presents a baffling conundrum. It questions the history of peoples, places, and cultures to create wedges between faiths. Despite its detractors, religion remains firmly embedded in our universal consciousness. Those who do not subscribe to any organized religion also now see scriptures as candlelights in their personal and professional lives. The philosophical outlook also underpins attitudes in corporations. The coronavirus put us through long spells of isolation and mental distress. Loneliness is the nightmare of the social animal. It is a taboo state in our social world. The need for connection is so central to our being that to experience its lack plunges the body into a state of a minor emergency. The short essays in this book are a compilation of spiritual columns the author wrote for the Asian Age. The pandemic ennobled these pithy ideas into a profound philosophy. The author hopes they will resonate with the readers because they represent the sentiments of most of us who experienced several behavioural challenges during this crisis.

Book The Vulnerable Empowered Woman

Download or read book The Vulnerable Empowered Woman written by Tasha N. Dubriwny and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-14 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feminist women’s health movement of the 1960s and 1970s is credited with creating significant changes in the healthcare industry and bringing women’s health issues to public attention. Decades later, women’s health issues are more visible than ever before, but that visibility is made possible by a process of depoliticization The Vulnerable Empowered Woman assesses the state of women’s healthcare today by analyzing popular media representations—television, print newspapers, websites, advertisements, blogs, and memoirs—in order to understand the ways in which breast cancer, postpartum depression, and cervical cancer are discussed in American public life. From narratives about prophylactic mastectomies to young girls receiving a vaccine for sexually transmitted disease, the representations of women’s health today form a single restrictive identity: the vulnerable empowered woman. This identity defuses feminist notions of collective empowerment and social change by drawing from both postfeminist and neoliberal ideologies. The woman is vulnerable because of her very femininity and is empowered not to change the world, but to choose from among a limited set of medical treatments. The media’s depiction of the vulnerable empowered woman’s relationship with biomedicine promotes traditional gender roles and affirms women’s unquestioning reliance on medical science for empowerment. The book concludes with a call to repoliticize women’s health through narratives that can help us imagine women—and their relationship to medicine—differently.

Book Lean In

Download or read book Lean In written by Sheryl Sandberg and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2013-03-11 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • “A landmark manifesto" (The New York Times) that's a revelatory, inspiring call to action and a blueprint for individual growth that will empower women around the world to achieve their full potential. In her famed TED talk, Sheryl Sandberg described how women unintentionally hold themselves back in their careers. Her talk, which has been viewed more than eleven million times, encouraged women to “sit at the table,” seek challenges, take risks, and pursue their goals with gusto. Lean In continues that conversation, combining personal anecdotes, hard data, and compelling research to change the conversation from what women can’t do to what they can. Sandberg, COO of Meta (previously called Facebook) from 2008-2022, provides practical advice on negotiation techniques, mentorship, and building a satisfying career. She describes specific steps women can take to combine professional achievement with personal fulfillment, and demonstrates how men can benefit by supporting women both in the workplace and at home.

Book The Authority of Female Speech in Indian Goddess Traditions

Download or read book The Authority of Female Speech in Indian Goddess Traditions written by Anway Mukhopadhyay and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary debates on “mansplaining” foreground the authority enjoyed by male speech, and highlight the way it projects listening as the responsibility of the dominated, and speech as the privilege of the dominant. What mansplaining denies systematically is the right of women to speak and be heard as much as men. This book excavates numerous instances of the authority of female speech from Indian goddess traditions and relates them to the contemporary gender debates, especially to the issues of mansplaining and womansplaining. These traditions present a paradigm of female speech that compels its male audience to reframe the configurations of “masculinity.” This tradition of authoritative female speech forms a continuum, even though there are many points of disjuncture as well as conjuncture between the Vedic, Upanishadic, puranic, and tantric figurations of the Goddess as an authoritative speaker. The book underlines the Goddess’s role as the spiritual mentor of her devotee, exemplified in the Devi Gitas, and re-situates the female gurus in Hinduism within the traditions that find in Devi’s speech ultimate spiritual authority. Moreover, it explores whether the figure of Devi as Womansplainer can encourage a more dialogic structure of gender relations in today’s world where female voices are still often undervalued.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian womanhood. What does it mean? When does it happen--at a certain age, status, or maturity? How do we know we're no longer girls? And when we've figured that out, how will others know to call us "woman" rather than "girl"? Christian women don't usually get a rite of passage in which they are named "woman." Seeing this need, Amy Davis Abdallah created such a rite, and this book accompanies it. No need to be in her rite of passage, however, to name yourself "woman." Read this book and then sit down with some friends to talk about it over tea, coffee, and/or chocolate. Let The Book of Womanhood create a path through the confusion by its flexible framework of finding identity through developing relationship with God, self, others, and creation. Amy writes simply as one perhaps further along in her journey of womanhood, and she doesn't write alone. She includes the stories of biblical women, of friends young and old, and even more. The diverse voices come together as a cloud of witnesses--encouraging us in our individual journeys. Read for empowerment. Read for transformation. Read. And become the woman of God you were created to be.

Book Microcredit and Women s Empowerment

Download or read book Microcredit and Women s Empowerment written by Aminul Faraizi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a case study of Bangladesh, and based on a long term participatory observation method, this book investigates claims of the success of microcredit, as well as the critiques of it, in the context of women’s empowerment. It confronts the distinction between women’s increasing wealth as a consequence of the success of microcredit programmes and their apparent non-commensurate empowerment, looking at two organisations (the Grameen Bank and the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) as they operate in two localities in rural Bangladesh, in order to discover how enrichment and empowerment are often confused. The book goes on to establish that the well-publicised success stories of the microcredit programme are blown out of proportion, and that the dynamics of collective responsibility for repayment of loans by a group of women borrowers – usually seen to be a tool for the success of microcredit – is in fact no less repressive than traditional debt collectors. This book makes a contribution to development debates; challenging adherents to more closely specify those conditions under which microcredit does indeed have validity, as well as providing insights relevant to South Asian Studies and Development Studies.
