Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Bible appears so frequently in Dylan Thomas' work, some critics have decided that he must be a religious poet. Others, noting blasphemous statements and certain irreligious aspects of Thomas' personal life, contend that he was no such thing. Rushworth M. Kidder, investigating this problem, looks below the surface of the obviously religious imagery and discovers a more profound poetry. The first part of this book discusses the nature of religious poetry and the application of that term to Thomas' work; it then develops the necessary background based on his letters and prose comments to provide a foundation for the study; and finally it examines the relationship between the religious aspects of his poetry and his well-known ambiguity. The author re-defines the vocabulary for dealing with religious imagery by establishing three distinct categories of imagery: referential, allusive, and thematic. This original technique is used to examine critically Thomas' poems to show the development of his religious and poetic thought. There are numerous close, sensitive readings of individual poems to show how his poetry, like the Bible, teaches by parable, speaking deliberate ambiguity rather than simple dogma. This strategy inspired poetry that is technically complex but thematically simple, a mode of verse that became more explicitly religious in the poet's final years. Originally published in 1973. Book Beyond Horatio s Philosophy The Fantasy of Peter S Beagle

Download or read book Beyond Horatio s Philosophy The Fantasy of Peter S Beagle written by David Stevens and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2013-08-16 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Beyond Horatio’s Philosophy: The Fantasy of Peter S. Beagle, David Stevens examines the fantasy of American writer Peter S. Beagle. He finds a consistent view of the world and an almost overpowering sense of humor, leading him to conclude that Beagle believes that love is the best thing we have and the only reason for living. His work will be read and enjoyed for generations to come, and Stevens tells you why. Beagle indulges in what Stevens terms "metaphysical speculations”: a working-out of the possibilities of the world being different than it is. He invites the reader to examine these speculations with him, and when we do, to come away from the experience as better men and women, believing in the transforming power of love and laughing at ourselves in the process. No writer could ask for more, or succeed better. Beagle would have us believe, to paraphrase Shakespeare's Hamlet, that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy. Complete with bibliography and index.

Book excerpt: Years ago, Tyrl was taken from his place of birth and brought to a new land, far from the shameful memory of his father. As far as Tyrl knows, his father was a betrayer of the king. His failure led to the loss of the Great Jewel, particularly the Eye of the Hawk that had supplied the magic of the village defense. Without it, the village was lost, so Tyrl was rescued from the ensuing debauchery at the age of two. Now twelve, Tyrl’s important Time of Transformation is upon him. If he comes through successfully, he will find his Life’s Purpose, but if he does not focus his mind and prepare correctly, he will go down the path of madness and death. He’s hopeful but haunted by the shadow of his ancestry. But there’s much more to his father’s story than he ever knew, and a close friend—and even maybe the king—could be to blame. Raised as a fieldworker, Tyrl soon realizes his disgraced father was a man of power. With this new knowledge, he journeys to uncover a great evil. During his quest, he learns the truth about the past, which helps him in the present as he hopes to create a bright future. Tyrl will root out the evil that has besieged his land. The land will be transformed, and one young man will become a leader as people once again come together in peace.

Book excerpt: An overview of current research at the intersection of psychology and biology, integrating evolutionary and developmental data and explanations. In the past few decades, sources of inspiration in the multidisciplinary field of cognitive science have widened. In addition to ongoing vital work in cognitive and affective neuroscience, important new work is being conducted at the intersection of psychology and the biological sciences in general. This volume offers an overview of the cross-disciplinary integration of evolutionary and developmental approaches to cognition in light of these exciting new contributions from the life sciences. This research has explored many cognitive abilities in a wide range of organisms and developmental stages, and results have revealed the nature and origin of many instances of the cognitive life of organisms. Each section of Cognitive Biology deals with a key domain of cognition: spatial cognition; the relationships among attention, perception, and learning; representations of numbers and economic values; and social cognition. Contributors discuss each topic from the perspectives of psychology and neuroscience, brain theory and modeling, evolutionary theory, ecology, genetics, and developmental science.
