Book excerpt: The novel tells the story of Fanny Price, starting when her overburdened family sends her at age ten to live in the household of her wealthy aunt and uncle and following her development into early adulthood. From early on critical interpretation has been diverse, differing particularly over the character of the heroine, Austen's views about theatrical performance and the centrality or otherwise of ordination and religion, and on the question of slavery. Some of these problems have been highlighted in the several later adaptations of the story for stage and screen.

Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Jane Austen is the type of writer capable of capturing the reality that surrounds her, of observing, valuing, criticizing, reflecting, reviewing and emphasizing human behavior in everyday situations, emphasizing the failures and successes of society regarding social issues, political, economic, family, traditions, customs, mechanisms of expression and thought, or knowledge and behavior. The author's writings are transcendent even today for several reasons. His writing, his literature, is one of them, but Austen's ability to present human characters, imperfect in the best of senses, and stories that speak of values, language, respect, change, judgment and prejudices, first impressions, social character, happiness, pain, suffering, or the importance of staying true to oneself, are examples that constitute an important part of the literary legacy of the English writer, who expresses them with great skill narrative in his works.Born on December 16, 1775, in Steventon, England, (dies in July 1817) as part of a wealthy family in the rural area, her novels usually point to some level, but invariably, the issue of falling in love, the couple and / or marriage, taking a look at the cultural issues of the subject, from its importance or need in some social circles, to deep reflection of what union ideally means, seen not as the loss of freedom,

Fanny's family is quite poor; her mother, unlike her sister Lady Bertram, married beneath her, and Fanny's father, a sailor, is disabled and drinks heavily. Fanny is abused by her other aunt, Mrs. Norris, a busybody who runs things at Mansfield Park, the Bertrams' estate. The Bertram daughters, Maria and Julia, are shallow, rather cruel girls, intent on marrying well and being fashionable. The elder son, Tom, is a roustabout and a drunk. Fanny finds solace only in the friendship of the younger son, Edmund, who is planning to be a clergyman. Fanny grows up shy and deferential, caught as she typically is between members of the Bertram family.Sir Thomas leaves Mansfield Park for Antigua, where he owns plantations. In his absence, two new figures arrive at Mansfield: Henry and Mary Crawford, the brother and sister of the local minister's wife. Henry and Mary are attractive and cheerful, and they soon become indispensable members of the Mansfield circle. Henry flirts extensively with Maria, who is engaged to marry the boring but wealthy Rushworth. He also flirts with Julia when it suits his purposes. At first, Mary is interested in Tom, the older son and heir, but she soon realizes that he is boring and not really interested in her. She finds herself increasingly attracted to Edmund, although the prospect of marrying a clergyman does not appeal to her, and she is often cruel to him on this account. In the meantime, Fanny has innocently fallen in love with Edmund, although she does not even admit this to herself. Yates, a visiting friend of Tom's, proposes that the group should put on a play. His idea is eagerly received by all except for Edmund and Fanny, who are horrified at the idea of acting. The play goes on anyways, however; Maria and Henry, as well as Mary and Edmund (who has been prevailed upon to take a role to avoid bringing in an outsider to play it), get to play some rather racy scenes with one another. When one of the women cannot make a rehearsal, Fanny is pressured to take a role. She is almost forced to give in when Sir Thomas makes a sudden entrance, having arrived from Antigua.Sir Thomas is unhappy about the play and quickly puts a stop to the improprieties. Since Henry has not declared his love, Maria is married to Rushworth. She and Julia leave Mansfield Park for London. Relationships between the Crawfords and the Bertrams intensify. Edmund nearly proposes to Mary several times, but her condescension and amorality always stop him at the last minute. He confides his feelings to Fanny, who is secretly upset by them. In the meantime, on a lark, Henry has decided to woo Fanny. He is surprised to find himself sincerely in love with her. Fanny has become indispensable as a companion to her aunt and uncle, and on the occasion of her brother William's visit, they give a ball in her honor. Some time after the ball, Henry helps William get a promotion in the Navy. Using this as leverage, he proposes to Fanny, who is mortified and refuses. He continues to pursue her. Her uncle is disappointed that she has refused such a wealthy man, and, as an indirect result, she is sent to stay with her parents in their filthy house.

Fanny is adopted by her auntie, Lady Bertram, and her uncle, Sir Thomas, and lived in their home, Mansfield Park, since she was young. At Mansfield, Fanny grows up with her four cousins: Tom, Edmund, Maria, and Julia. When Fanny initially shows up at Mansfield, she is awkward because of her lack of appropriate manner and openness to extravagance and abundance. She is homesick and misses her brother William, with whom she is amazingly close. In Fanny's early years in Mansfield Park, her relations, for the most part, disregard her; only her cousin Edmund makes a special effort to cause Fanny to feel great, building up an extreme connection between them.

The novel did not receive any critical attention when it was initially published; the first particular notice was in 1821, in a positive review of each of the published novels by Jane Austen. The critical reception from the late 20th century onward has been controversial. Paula Byrne, writing in the 21st century, found this to be one of Austen's best novels, and called it pioneering for being about meritocracy. However, Mansfield Park is perhaps Austen's most controversial novel due to its brief mention of the British slave trade, and the fact that Fanny's uncle and benefactor, Sir Thomas, owns a plantation in the West Indies. Some critics characterise Thomas's trip to Antigua as nothing more than an excuse for his long absence.

Book excerpt: A timid girl named Fanny Price comes to live with her wealthy relatives, the Bertrams, at Mansfield Park when she's just ten years old. Her own family is too big and too poor to raise her well, so her mother decides to send Fanny to live with her wealthy relatives instead. Fanny grows up very shy and is often ignored and treated unkindly by her cousins, her two aunts, and her uncle (who especially scares her).Jumping forward many years, Fanny and her cousins are now young adults and are out on the marriage market. Financial problems force Fanny's controlling uncle, Sir Thomas Bertram, to go check on his plantation in the Caribbean. Meanwhile, a wealthy brother and sister, Henry and Mary Crawford, move to a nearby house and shake things up at Mansfield Park. Love triangles and quadrangles start springing up like crazy. Two of Fanny's cousins, Maria and Julia Bertram, are both in love with Henry; Mary Crawford tries to fall for Tom Bertram but ends up interested in his younger brother Edmund instead; and Fanny herself is in love with her cousin Edmund. A Mr. Rushworth is also on the scene as Maria Bertram's fiancé.The young people all get into lots of trouble while Sir Thomas is out of town. After a trip to Mr. Rushworth's house, where Maria gets a little too cozy with Henry, the group starts looking for fun things to do at Mansfield Park instead. They all decide to put on Elizabeth Inchbald's play Lovers' Vows (which contains some controversial subject matter), despite the objections of Edmund and Fanny.Sir Thomas returns home unexpectedly and makes them stop working on the play. Henry quickly departs, which breaks the hearts of Maria and Julia. Maria decides to marry Mr. Rushworth after all and leaves for her honeymoon with Julia in tow. Meanwhile, Mary Crawford starts up a friendship with Fanny, but Fanny is mainly thrilled when her brother William Price pays a visit.Mary and Edmund fall further in love, though as a second son who will not inherit his father's estate, Edmund isn't entirely appealing to Mary. Henry decides to make Fanny his next conquest, but ends up genuinely falling for her. But when Henry proposes, Fanny refuses him, shocking all of her friends and neighbors. Fanny won't tell anyone the real reason for her refusal (she loves Edmund and thinks Henry isn't morally upright) and Sir Thomas decides to send Fanny to visit her family in Portsmouth. While there, Fanny discovers that Mansfield Park has become her real home...
