Download or read book Old Manors in the Colony of Maryland Classic Reprint written by Annie Leakin Sioussat and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Manors in the Colony of Maryland In the presentation of this - the second of the series of Early Manors in the Colony of Maryland -it must be borne in mind that it is simply the transcription of lectures given before the Maryland Society of the Colonial Dames of America, under the auspices of the Historic Research Committee, in which the Chairman has endeavored to preserve some traces of these early institutions so rapidly disappear ing. In many cases their later history and that of the large plantations built up in their partition is most interesting, but onlv the earlier lines could be here given and onlv the very earliest documents used. The destruction of so many records by fire in the Court Houses, especially those of 1747 and 1882 in Calvert County, make the work more dif heult and somewhat imperfect, but for the many opportunities afforded the Chairman to gain a personal touch with what remains of the past and to procure the views for illustration, her most sincere obligations are due to a host of friends who will recognize their part and her gratitude in the story'of the Manors on the Patuxent. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Mansions of Maryland and Delaware Some people collect old furniture, some old books. I for many years have been a collector of old houses within easy travelling distance of my home in Balti more, and the best of my finds are to be found in this book. He who would collect old houses must possess much enthusiasm, a determination that will not be dis couraged, and a fine power of walking. Fully one-half of the points that he visits because of hearsay will be found to be without interest, and of the others that he seeks out only a few insignificant facts will at first be ascertainable. A continual source of surprise to one who searches for colonial homes is how little is known about them even in the immediate neighborhood in which they have stood for so many years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Virginia Company of London: With Letters to and From the First Colony, Never Before Printed Believing that there should be some distinct history of a Company that planted the first permanent English settlement in America, and in 1619 instituted the first representative legislative Assembly, whose members were elected by general suffrage, this work has been prepared, and by the liberality of a true disciple of Aldus, who has a love for historical studies, Mr. Munsell, of Albany, New York, is presented to the public. The main sources of information have been the manuscript records of the Company, the history of the preservation of which for about two hundred and fifty years, is full of interest. In one of the old mansions of rural Chelsea, which tradition says was the home of Sir Thomas More, the warm friend of Erasmus, and author of the political romance of Utopia, there dwelt, in 1624, Sir John Danvers, a prominent member of the Virginia Company, who had married the gentle and comely widow Herbert, already the mother of ten children, two of whom were George, the holy poet, and Edward, the philosophical Deist. Download or read book American Cake written by Anne Byrn and published by Rodale. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cakes have become an icon of American cultureand a window to understanding ourselves. Be they vanilla, lemon, ginger, chocolate, cinnamon, boozy, Bundt, layered, marbled, even checkerboard--they are etched in our psyche. Cakes relate to our lives, heritage, and hometowns. And as we look at the evolution of cakes in America, we see the evolution of our history: cakes changed with waves of immigrants landing on ourshores, with the availability (and scarcity) of ingredients, with cultural trends and with political developments. In her new book American Cake, Anne Byrn (creator of the New York Times bestselling series The Cake Mix Doctor) will explore this delicious evolution and teach us cake-making techniques from across the centuries, all modernized for today’s home cooks. Anne wonders (and answers for us) why devil’s food cake is not red in color, how the Southern delicacy known as Japanese Fruit Cake could be so-named when there appears to be nothing Japanese about the recipe, and how Depression-era cooks managed to bake cakes without eggs, milk, and butter. Who invented the flourless chocolate cake, the St. Louis gooey butter cake, the Tunnel of Fudge cake? Were these now-legendary recipes mishaps thanks to a lapse of memory, frugality, or being too lazy to run to the store for more flour? Join Anne for this delicious coast-to-coast journey and savor our nation's history of cake baking. From the dark, moist gingerbread and blueberry cakes of New England and the elegant English-style pound cake of Virginia to the hard-scrabble apple stack cake home to Appalachia and the slow-drawl, Deep South Lady Baltimore Cake, you will learn the stories behind your favorite cakes and how to bake them.
