Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Book). Before the popularity of the electric guitar and before every teenager with a rock 'n' roll dream had a band in their garage, Manny's Music in New York City was providing the hardware for swing stars and big bands, and establishing itself as the place to go for the musician in the know. Besides being a garden of delight for musicians looking for the latest gear, Manny's became a center of activity where stories and tips were swapped among superstars and budding musicians alike. The Wall of Fame is not only for anyone who has ever bought a guitar or played in a band, but for fans and music history freaks who want insight into a side of the music world hardly ever seen by non-musicians. It's for whoever wondered where Buddy Holly got his Stratocaster . . . or where Jimi Hendrix got his. "Manny's was a place where you could almost feel the spirit of those musicians whose photos adorned the walls. I treasure my experiences in this wonderful place."--Carlos Santana

Drawing on a range of sources, including information from surviving family members, this first full-length illustrated biography presents a detailed and personal portrait of the sociologist and photographer whose haunting images of children at work in cotton mills and coal mines sparked the movement to end child labor, culminating with the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. But his firepower is nothing compared to the heat Michael faces in his day-to-day life. Newly orphaned after his father led the family’s escape from Cuba, Michael’s only family is his seventeen-yearold brother Carlos. If Social Services hears of their situation, they will be separated in the foster-care system—or worse, sent back to Cuba. Together, the boys carry on alone, dodging bills and anyone who asks too many questions. But then someone wonders how a twelve-year-old boy could possibly throw with as much power as Michael Arroyo throws. With no way to prove his age, no birth certificate, and no parent to fight for his cause, Michael’s secret world is blown wide open, and he discovers that family can come from the most unexpected sources. Perfect for any Little Leaguer with dreams of making it big--as well as for fans of Mike Lupica's other New York Times bestsellers Travel Team, The Big Field, The Underdogs, Million-Dollar Throw, and The Game Changers series, this cheer-worthy baseball story shows that when the game knocks you down, champions stand tall.

Book Fecal Matters in Early Modern Literature and Art

Download or read book Fecal Matters in Early Modern Literature and Art written by Jeff Persels and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feces, urine, flatus, phlegm, vomitus - unlike ourselves, our most educated forebears did not disdain these functions, and, further, they employed scatological references in all manner of works. This collection of essays was provoked by what its editors considered to be a curious lacuna: the relative academic neglect of the copious and ubiquitous scatological rhetoric of Early Modern Europe, here broadly defined as the representation of the process and product of elimination of the body's waste products. The contributors to this volume examine the many forms and functions of scatology as literary and artistic trope, and reconsider this last taboo in the context of Early Modern European expression. They address unflinchingly both the objective reality of the scatological as part and parcel of material culture - inescapably a much larger part, a much heavier parcel then than now - and the subjective experience of that reality among contemporaries.
