Download or read book Manningham written by Simon Taylor and published by Historic England. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book raises awareness of the wide range and varied character of the historic landscape and buildings which constitute Manningham, and the forces and trends which have contributed to its appearance over time. It tells the story, through its buildings and landscape, of Manningham's development from a thinly populated rural township to a fully developed, mostly middle-class, fashionable, 19th-century city suburb full of self-assurance, civic pride and high-quality architecture. It examines how successfully and in what ways the suburb and its buildings have subsequently continued to function, following the decline and disappearance of the traditional industries on which its success was originally based and a substantially changed cultural and demographic profile. The publication will appeal to all of those with an interest in Bradford and its buildings. In addition, by supplementing the research project and literary work with a major outreach and film project, the fruits of which help to inform the publication text and are incorporated into the book as a DVD insert, the publication will be extremely effective in engaging and developing new audiences amongst the people living and working in Manningham. It gives them a 'voice', allowing them to share their memories and put forward their own views and opinions on the district which has become increasingly known to outsiders only for its problems of economic out-migration, increasing levels of crime and headline-making outbreaks of civil unrest. The publication also serves as a response to recently growing nation-wide development pressure on historic suburbs and this will increase understanding of historical suburban development and modern adaptation, and appeal to those with an interest in social, urban and industrial history.

Book excerpt: Lived diversities: Space, place and identities in the multi-ethnic city is a timely and important book, which focuses on multi-ethnic interaction in an inner city area. Addressing difficult issues that are often simplistically and negatively portrayed it challenges the stereotypical denigration of inner city life, and Muslim communities in particular. Using well-crafted historical, political and contextual explanations the book provides a nuanced account of contemporary multi-ethnic coexistence. This invaluable contribution to our understanding of the politics and practice of multicultural coexistence is a must-read for students and practitioners interested in ethnic diversity, urban policy and the politics of place and space.

Download or read book Young Muslim and Criminal written by Mohammed Qasim and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been significant negative attention towards young British male Muslims, who are perceived to be increasingly dangerous and criminal. However, very little is known about those who offend, as few studies have attempted to understand their lived experience. After spending four years with a group of young British Pakistani Muslim men who were involved in a range of offending behaviours, Qasim gained unique first-hand insight into their multifaceted lives. In this book he unwraps their lives, taking into account their socio-economic situation, the make-up of their community, cultural and religious influences which impacted on them and their involvement in crime. He explores their identities and explains what role, if any, religion and Pakistani culture play in their criminal behaviour. With a focus on the apparent link with gun crime and drug dealing, this important book exposes the complex nature of the young men’s pathways into crime.
Download or read book Elizabethan Rhetoric written by Peter Mack and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-17 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Mack examines the impact of humanist training in rhetoric and argument on a range of Elizabethan prose texts, including political orations, histories, romances, conduct manuals, privy council debates and personal letters. Elizabethan Rhetoric reconstructs the knowledge, skills and approaches which an Elizabethan would have acquired in order to participate in the political and religious debates of the time: the approaches to an audience, analysis and replication of textual structures, organisation of arguments and tactics for disputation. Study of the rhetorical codes and conventions in terms of which debates were conducted is currently a major area of historical and literary enquiry, and Mack provides a wealth of new information about what was taught and how these conventions were exploited in personal memoranda, court depositions, sermons and political and religious pamphlets. This important book will be invaluable for all those interested in the culture, literature and political history of the period.
