Book Manners and Customs of the Japanese in Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Manners and Customs of the Japanese in Nineteenth Century written by Philipp Franz von Siebold, Ph.D. and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manners and Customs of the Japanese in the Nineteenth Century is a delightful account of the Japanese of Tokugawa Japan. This unique handbook of Japanese manners, customs, history, and singular happenings was published in New York in 1841. Based on the firsthand observations of Dr. Philipp Franz von Siebold of the Dutch trading port Deshima in the years 1823—29, as well as on Spanish, Portuguese, German, and English records of early Japan, it provided us with a very rare picture of what Japan was like in the final years of its feudal period. Dr. von Siebold, the chief contributor, was attached to the Deshima post as a medial adviser and traveled within Japan, befriending and teaching many Japanese who were later to distinguish themselves in Western scientific knowledge. An indiscretion in accepting a map of Japan brought about his banishment by the Edo government and forced return to his native Germany. No collection of books on Japan is complete without a copy of Manners and Customs of the Japanese. It is here reprinted in its entirety from the original edition. Long submerged and virtually forgotten after a century of neglect, it is now made available for a new generation of readers.

Book The Story of Old Japan Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Old Japan Classic Reprint written by Joseph H. Longford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Old Japan The writer, in this book, has endeavoured to tell the Story of Japan from the creation to the accession of the present Emperor, when Old Japan - the Japan of feudal ism and seclusion - may be said to have come to an end and a new nation to have been born, which was destined to startle the world by a wondrous display of military, legislative and industrial progress. There are many Histories of Japan by English or American writers, and in the works of Kaempfer, translated from the German - Dickson, Adams, Griffis and Murray abundant material will be found by those who desire to form more than a general acquaintance with the subject. Those who desire to extend their inquiries still further, to acquire an esoteric knowledge of special periods, personages, or great political or economic movements, will find a storehouse closely packed with golden treasures of information in the Transactions of the Asiatic Society of Japan, every volume of which contains able monographs by scholarly experts who have investigated in Japan the varied subjects with which they deal. Above all, they will find the beliefs, held by the Japanese themselves, faithfully mirrored in the exact translations of native classics, which have been made by Satow, Aston, and Chamber lain, the three great English scholars, whose knowledge of the Japanese language and literature does not fall below that of the most accomplished Japanese literati. All these works, whether histories, monographs or trans lations, are for the serious student, rather than for the lay reader, who, without leisure for painstaking studies, may still desire to possess some knowledge of the inter esting mythology and history of a country that is now playing so great a part in the theatre of the world, that is bound to our own by close political and commercial ties. It has been the aim of the present writer to supply this deficiency and to provide a narrative, in logical sequence, of all the great periods in Japanese history, written in a style which will render its perusal no greater task than that of an ordinary novel, to tell, in fact, The Story of Japan throughout the long ages of the past, just as the novelist tells the story of his own heroes and their lives. An attempt has been already made to tell this story in an even more concise manner in a series of articles in the Nineteenth Century and After. It was the interest which, the writer found, was aroused by these articles among his own associates that tempted him to use the wealth of material that was at his disposal and his own knowledge to extend the articles into the present volume. Book Sino Japanese Transculturation

Download or read book Sino Japanese Transculturation written by Richard King and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a multi-author work which examines the cultural dimensions of the relations between East Asia's two great powers, China and Japan, in a period of change and turmoil, from the late nineteenth century to the end of the Second World War. This period saw Japanese invasion of China, the occupation of China's North-east (Manchuria) and Taiwan, and war between the two nations from 1937-1945; the scars of that war are still evident in relations between the two countries today. In their quest for modernity, the rulers and leading thinkers of China and Japan defined themselves in contradisctinction to the other, influenced both by traditional bonds of classical culture and by the influx of new Western ideas that flowed through Japan to China. The experiences of intellectual and cultural awakening in the two countries were inextricably linked, as our studies of poetry, fiction, philosophy, theatre, and popular culture demonstrate. The chapters explore this process of "transculturation" - the sharing and exchange of ideas and artistic expression - not only in Japan and China, but in the larger region which Joshua Fogel has called the "Sinosphere," an area including Korea and parts of Southeast Asia with a shared heritage of Confucian statecraft and values underpinned by the classical Chinese language. The authors of the chapters, who include established senior academics and younger scholars, and employ a range of disciplines and methodologies, were selected by the editors for their expertise in particular aspects of this rich and complex cultural relationship. As for the editors: Richard King and Cody Poulton are scholars and translators of Chinese literature and Japanese theatre respectively, each taking a historical and comparative perspective to the study of their subject; Katsuhiko Endo is an intellectual historian dealing with both Japan and China.

Book Antiquarians of Nineteenth Century Japan

Download or read book Antiquarians of Nineteenth Century Japan written by Hiroyuki Suzuki and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the changing process of evaluating objects during the period of Japan’s rapid modernization. Originally published in Japanese, Antiquarians of Nineteenth-Century Japan looks at the approach toward object-based research across the late Tokugawa and early Meiji periods, which were typically kept separate, and elucidates the intellectual continuities between these eras. Focusing on the top-down effects of the professionalizing of academia in the political landscape of Meiji Japan, which had advanced by attacking earlier modes of scholarship by antiquarians, Suzuki shows how those outside the government responded, retracted, or challenged new public rules and values. He explores the changing process of evaluating objects from the past in tandem with the attitudes and practices of antiquarians during the period of Japan’s rapid modernization. He shows their roots in the intellectual sphere of the late Tokugawa period while also detailing how they adapted to the new era. Suzuki also demonstrates that Japan's antiquarians had much in common with those from Europe and the United States. Art historian Maki Fukuoka provides an introduction to the English translation that highlights the significance of Suzuki’s methodological and intellectual analyses and shows how his ideas will appeal to specialists and nonspecialists alike.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Japanese Manners and Customs Dear Sir Edmund, These few 'Sketches of Japanese Manners and Customs' were collected during the years 1864-5, at which time I was attached to the Battalion of Royal Marines for service in Japan, and it is now very pleasing to have the privilege of dedicating them to one who was the friend and companion-in-arms of my late Father. In memory of this bond of friendship, and in grateful acknowledgment of the many kindnesses you have shown me, this Dedication of my humble efforts to assist in the elucidation of the social condition of a distant and comparatively unknown race, affords me deep gratification.
