Book excerpt: This book examines the occurrence of manipulation in the translation of British and American press articles into Polish for Forum. Przegląd Prasy Światowej magazine in the People’s Republic of Poland, under preventive censorship. The existence of source text (ST) manipulation in translation is discovered through comparative analyses of STs and target texts (TTs). The text analyses investigate topics, editorial features, translation techniques, and the presence of Newspeak characteristics. This study shows the existence of methods manipulating the STs within all analytical areas chosen in order to create a positive view of the communist authorities’ activities and promote an optimistic image of the political, economic and social situation in the country. It offers a wide range of theory and practice concerning the specialized language of politics and propaganda, translation theories, strategies and techniques, and represents a good source of knowledge and practice for both novice translators and professionals.

Even though no specific literary or cultural theory is explicitly discussed in the book, each of the central issues raised in particular chapters implicitly refers to a significant theoretical problem. The first section of the book is devoted to five examples of English translations of Polish poetry and Polish translations of English poetry. The second section of the book is titled Polish Culture in European and American Contexts. The first three chapters discuss the issue of « hate speech and cultural misunderstandings in the context of Reformation polemics, and the problem of pattern poetry. The next five chapters deal with various issues of cross-cultural communication between Poland and America. Books Are Weapons presents the first English-language study of that which connected them—the press. Siobhan Doucette provides a comprehensive examination of the Polish opposition’s independent, often underground, press and its crucial role in the events leading to the historic Round Table and popular elections of 1989. While other studies have emphasized the role that the Solidarity movement played in bringing about civil society in 1980-1981, Doucette instead argues that the independent press was the essential binding element in the establishment of a true civil society during the mid- to late 1980s. Based on a thorough investigation of underground publications and interviews with important activists of the period from 1976 to 1989, Doucette shows how the independent press, rooted in the long Polish tradition of well-organized resistance to foreign occupation, reshaped this tradition to embrace nonviolent civil resistance while creating a network that evolved from a small group of dissidents into a broad opposition movement with cross-national ties and millions of sympathizers. It was the galvanizing force in the resistance to communism and the rebuilding of Poland’s democratic society.

Over past quarter of century Polish society become deeply consumerist one. In America, this situation happened earlier and sociologists warned about it long before our market assimilated theirs. The path from advertisement of any product leads amongst the others - through the desk of the translator. There are, obviously, home products and these which Poland can be proud of, nevertheless, the majority of goods that are being presented through various forms of advertisement comes from foreign markets. What is more, these products and their producers, together with the agencies responsible for implementation of these goods in particular countries, often choose to use their original campaigns. Therefore, Polish translators need to work in such way, to make the language of the advert spot catchy enough for our market. Such work is an invisible work and the one requiring lots of linguistic skills, joined with the cultural awareness and many other factors. The art of translation is a rewarding work, nevertheless, there are the parts of it which are necessary to be learned and understood before anyone approaches such a responsible job as translating the advertisements of world-wide known products.

Book excerpt: The idea of this dissertation ascends from the scholarly interest in developing the issue of the history of emotions. Among four basic emotions, this thesis explores the vital historical and social aspects of the emotion of fear. In particular, this thesis offers a complex introduction to the general problem of propaganda fear management in communist Poland. The concept of fear management is examined as a manipulation of the propaganda information, referring to both the real and artificially stimulated fears with a special focus on external dreads. The entire set of figures of foreign threats are investigated as rhetorical tropes of the 'external enemies of Poland', exploited by communist propaganda with the intention of legitimising the power of the postwar authorities and to delegitimise the alliance with the USA and its Western partners. In this thesis, the foreign threats are represented mainly by the 'German threat', 'American dread' and the 'danger provoked by Western spies'. Along with the examination of the various ways and circumstances in which the above propaganda strategy was applied, this dissertation addresses the crucial problem of the social attitude towards communist media efforts dedicated to manipulation with fear. All six chapters of this thesis offer conclusions dedicated to popular reception of particular propaganda campaigns exploiting a given threat. Analysis of these conclusions allows tracing the dynamic of social moods in relation both to propaganda activity and socio-political circumstances shaping the atmosphere within Polish postwar society. The parallel discussion of the implementation of, and social reaction towards, the propaganda fear management strategy allows general conclusions to be drawn concerning the effectiveness of communication between the communist authorities and society in the Socialist Bloc. Based on archival research, this thesis shows and interprets the efficiency of communist media attempts to manage the emotion of fear.
