Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Navy's first two-ocean war was the Spanish-American War of 1898. A war that was global in scope, with the decisive naval battles of war at Manila Bay and Santiago de Cuba separated by two months and over ten thousand miles. During these battles in this quick, modern war, America s New Steel Navy came of age. While the American commanders sailed to war with a technologically advanced fleet, it was the lessons they had learned from Adm. David Farragut in the Civil War that prepared them for victory over the Spaniards. This history of the U.S. Navy s operations in the war provides some memorable portraits of the colorful officers who decided the outcome of these battles: Shang Dewey in the Philippines and Fighting Bob Evans off southern Cuba; Jack Philip conning the Texas and Constructor Hobson scuttling the Merrimac; Clark of the Oregon pushing his battleship around South America; and Adm. William Sampson and Commodore Scott Schley ending their careers in controversy. These officers sailed into battle with a navy of middle-aged lieutenants and overworked bluejackets, along with green naval militiamen. They were accompanied by numerous onboard correspondents, who documented the war.In addition to descriptions of the men who fought or witnessed the pivotal battles on the American side, the book offers sympathetic portraits of several Spanish officers, the Dons for whom American sailors held little personal enmity. Admirals Patricio Montojo and Pasqual Cervera, doomed to sacrifice their forces for the pride of a dying empire, receive particular attention. The first study of the Spanish-American War to be published in many years, this book takes a journalistic approach to the subject, making the conflict and the people involved relevant to today s readers. This work details a war in which victory was determined as much by leadership as by the technology of the American Steel Navy.

Download or read book Spain China and Japan in Manila 1571 1644 written by Birgit Tremml-Werner and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spain, China and Japan in Manila, 1571-1644 offers a new perspective on the connected histories of Spain, China, and Japan as they emerged and developed following Manila's foundation as the capital of the Spanish Philippines in 1571. Examining a wealth of multilingual primary sources, Birgit Tremml-Werner shows that cross-cultural encounters not only shaped Manila's development as a "Eurasian" port city, but also had profound political, economic, and social ramifications for the three pre-modern states. Combining a systematic comparison with a focus on specific actors during this period, this book addresses many long-held misconceptions and offers a more balanced and multi-faceted view of these nations' histories.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish-American War and Battles in the Philippines: Containing a Full and Graphic Account of Dewey's Great Victory at Manila; Sinking of the Spanish Fleet at Santiago; Battles of San Juan and El Caney; Surrender of Santiago and Invasion of Porto Rico; Including Battles With the Insurgents at Manila Spanish domination of the Isle of Cuba has been so relentlessly merciless, and has occasioned such horror and unrest in our own land, that war has indeed seemed prefer able to a further continuance of the abhorrent barbarities continuing with such cruel persistence at our very doors. Humanity and our national peace of mind, together with the rights which citizens of the United States had in Cuba and on the high seas, apart from the reparation justly and speedily due for the treacherous loss of the battle-ship Maine and her gallant crew, demanded that our country should assert its authority and promptly maintain the honor of its flag. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Illuminating.… An eloquent testament to a doomed city and its people.” —The Wall Street Journal In early 1945, General Douglas MacArthur prepared to reclaim Manila, America’s Pearl of the Orient, which had been seized by the Japanese in 1942. Convinced the Japanese would abandon the city, he planned a victory parade down Dewey Boulevard—but the enemy had other plans. The Japanese were determined to fight to the death. The battle to liberate Manila resulted in the catastrophic destruction of the city and a rampage by Japanese forces that brutalized the civilian population, resulting in a massacre as horrific as the Rape of Nanking. Drawing from war-crimes testimony, after-action reports, and survivor interviews, Rampage recounts one of the most heartbreaking chapters of Pacific War history.
