Book excerpt: The monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have severely limited the portrayal of the divine as feminine. But in Hinduism "God" very often means "Goddess." This extraordinary collection explores twelve different Hindu goddesses, all of whom are in some way related to Devi, the Great Goddess. They range from the liquid goddess-energy of the River Ganges to the possessing, entrancing heat of Bhagavati and Seranvali. They are local, like Vindhyavasini, and global, like Kali; ancient, like Saranyu, and modern, like "Mother India." The collection combines analysis of texts with intensive fieldwork, allowing the reader to see how goddesses are worshiped in everyday life. In these compelling essays, the divine feminine in Hinduism is revealed as never before--fascinating, contradictory, powerful.

Download or read book The War Within Between Good and Evil written by Bhimeswara Challa and published by . This book was released on with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human has always prided himself as an exceptional ‘moral species’ but has always been haunted by two questions: ‘Why am I not good when I want to be; ‘why do I do bad when I don’t want to’. This is at the heart of what scriptures and sages have long alluded to as the eternal internal struggle-between good and evil - that wages in the human consciousness. The book posits that much of our confusion and angst stems from our inability to recognize the ramifications of this ‘war’ between two sides of our own ‘self’. It is because we are ignoring this ‘war’ between two sides of our own ‘self’. It is because we are ignoring this war that we are losing all other wars of the world. That ignorance is the primary source of all the horrors, malevolence, and violence that fill us with so much dread. But a ‘favorable’ outcome is possible only if the forces of goodness are aided to get an upper hand consistently - and that calls for two cathartic changes: consciousness-change by inducing a turn from the mind to the heart; and contextual-change, by radically reconstructing the roles of morality, money, and mortality in our everyday lives. The book offers a menu of insights and options we all can use to tilt the scales in the war waging inside each of us.

Download or read book Good and Evil written by Bhimeswara Challa and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2021-09-03 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By any measure, we are at an inflection point in human history. As the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has shown, it is not only the planet that is at risk but our very destiny. We must take an unblinking look at who we are compared with who we want to be or ought to be. That entails going within to discover what is happening deep inside our consciousness. This book suggests that the root of our troubles is our ignorance that there is a perennial war within each of us between good and evil. Like in any war, both sides need supplies. But in this internal war, they must come from outside, in the shape of our daily doings and choices. As you read, you’ll get a roadmap on how to make better decisions and contain the evil within. Get answers to questions such as: • Why must we fix the inside before fixing the outside? • How can we prevent evil from overwhelming our consciousness? • How can the good inside of us overwhelm the bad outside? There is no nobler calling for any of us at this pivotal point than to volunteer to join others committed to bettering themselves so we can rescue mankind from self-annihilation.

Download or read book The Authority of Female Speech in Indian Goddess Traditions written by Anway Mukhopadhyay and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary debates on “mansplaining” foreground the authority enjoyed by male speech, and highlight the way it projects listening as the responsibility of the dominated, and speech as the privilege of the dominant. What mansplaining denies systematically is the right of women to speak and be heard as much as men. This book excavates numerous instances of the authority of female speech from Indian goddess traditions and relates them to the contemporary gender debates, especially to the issues of mansplaining and womansplaining. These traditions present a paradigm of female speech that compels its male audience to reframe the configurations of “masculinity.” This tradition of authoritative female speech forms a continuum, even though there are many points of disjuncture as well as conjuncture between the Vedic, Upanishadic, puranic, and tantric figurations of the Goddess as an authoritative speaker. The book underlines the Goddess’s role as the spiritual mentor of her devotee, exemplified in the Devi Gitas, and re-situates the female gurus in Hinduism within the traditions that find in Devi’s speech ultimate spiritual authority. Moreover, it explores whether the figure of Devi as Womansplainer can encourage a more dialogic structure of gender relations in today’s world where female voices are still often undervalued.
