Book excerpt: Molecular magnets show many properties not met in conventional metallic magnetic materials, i.e. low density, transparency to electromagnetic radiation, sensitivity to external stimuli such as light, pressure, temperature, chemical modification or magnetic/electric fields, and others. They can serve as “functional” materials in sensors of different types or be applied in high-density magnetic storage or nanoscale devices. Research into molecule-based materials became more intense at the end of the 20th century and is now an important branch of modern science. The articles in this Special Issue, written by physicists and chemists, reflect the current work on molecular magnets being carried out in several research centers. Theoretical papers in the issue concern the influence of spin anisotropy in the low dimensional lattice of the resulting type of magnet, as well as thermodynamics and magnetic excitations in spin trimers. The impact of external pressure on structural and magnetic properties and its underlying mechanisms is described using the example of Prussian blue analogue data. The other functionality discussed is the magnetocaloric effect, investigated in coordination polymers and high spin clusters. In this issue, new molecular magnets are presented: (i) ferromagnetic high-spin [Mn6] single-molecule magnets, (ii) solvatomagnetic compounds changing their structure and magnetism dependent on water content, and (iii) a family of purely organic magnetic materials. Finally, an advanced calorimetric study of anisotropy in magnetic molecular superconductors is reviewed.

However, the understanding of the intriguing physical properties is still at an exploratory stage. Herein, owing to the magnetic frustration prompted by Mn6N or Mn6C octahedra, the abounding magnetic structures of antiperovskites, including collinear antiferromagnetic, collinear ferromagnetic, collinear ferrimagnetic, non-collinear magnetic, and non-coplanar magnetic spin configurations, are systematically introduced through the updated coverage. In addition, owing to the “spin-lattice-charge” coupling of antiperovskites, a large number of physical properties, such as anomalous thermal expansion, giant magnetoresistance, anomalous Hall effect, piezomagnetic/baromagnetic effects, magnetocaloric effect, barocaloric effect, etc., are summarized by combining the discussions of the determined magnetic structures. This review aims to clarify the current research progress in this field, focusing on the relationship between the magnetic structures and the correlated physical properties, and provides the conclusion and outlook on further performance optimization and mechanism exploration in antiperovskites.

Subvolumes III/19a through III/19f treat the intrinsic magnetic properties, i.e. those magnetic properties which depend only on the chemical composition and the crystal structure. So far, subvolumes III/19a, III/19b, III/19c, III/19d1, III/19d2, III/19e1, III/19e2 and III/19f1 have appeared. Data on the properties that depend on the preparation of the samples measured, as for instance, thin films, amorphous alloys or the magnetic alloys used in technical applications, are being compiled in the subvolume of III/19g (Thin Films) and III/19h which covers the magnetic properties of liquid quenched alloys containing transition elements. This subvolume III/19i2 deals with the magnetic properties of hard magnetic alloys for permanent magnets. The large fields of both the well-known magnets based on 3d elements and the currently widely investigated alloys based on rare earth elements are covered. In view of the importance of colossal magnetoresistance, charge ordering and related phenomena exhibited by oxides to the physics and chemistry of solid materials, it is necessary and timely to have a book dealing with these topics.
