Download or read book Mangajin s Basic Japanese Through Comics a Compilation of the First 24 Basic Japanese Columns from Mangajin Magazine written by Vaughan P. Simmons and published by . This book was released on 2001-09 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents some very basic words & phrases in Japanese, along with some that are not usually considered "basic' at all -- but the Mangajin method can make even advanced material accessible to students at all levels. Frames from authentic Japanese manga ("comics") are used to illustrate every point, with English translations allowing the beginner to understand material that might otherwise stump even advanced students. This format also shows the "linguistic logic" of Japanese -- how words are strung together to present an idea. Not a textbook, but rather an entertaining supplement to a more structured study of Japanese. The 24 "lessons" can be read or studied in any order.

Book The Dragon and the Dazzle

Download or read book The Dragon and the Dazzle written by Marco Pellitteri and published by Tunué. This book was released on 2010 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the worldwide circulation of the products of cultural industries, an important role is played by Japanese popular culture in European contexts. Marco Pellitteri shows that the contact between Japanese pop culture and European youth publics occurred during two phases. By use of metaphor, the author calls them the Dragon and the Dazzle. The first took place between 1975 and 1995, the second from 1996 to today. They can be distinguished by the modalities of circulation and consumption/re-elaboration of Japanese themes and products in the most receptive countries: Italy, France, Spain, Germany and, across the ocean, the United States. During these two phases, several themes have been perceived, in Europe, as rising from Japan's social and mediatic systems. Among them, this book examines the most apparent from a European point of view: the author names them machine, infant, and mutation, visible mostly through manga, anime, videogames, and toys. Together with France, Italy is the European country that in this respect has had the most central role. There, Japanese imagination has been acknowledged not only by young people, but also by politicians, television programmers, the general public, educators, comics and cartoons authors. The growing influence of Japanese pop culture, connected to the appreciation of its manga, anime, toys, and videogames, also urges political and mediologic questions linked to the identity/ies of Japan as they are understood--wrongly or rightly--in Europe and the West, and to the increasingly important role of Japan in international relations."--Back cover

Book Japanese Visual Culture

Download or read book Japanese Visual Culture written by Mark W. MacWilliams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born of Japan's cultural encounter with Western entertainment media, manga (comic books or graphic novels) and anime (animated films) are two of the most universally recognized forms of contemporary mass culture. Because they tell stories through visual imagery, they vault over language barriers. Well suited to electronic transmission and distributed by Japan's globalized culture industry, they have become a powerful force in both the mediascape and the marketplace. This volume brings together an international group of scholars from many specialties to probe the richness and subtleties of these deceptively simple cultural forms. The contributors explore the historical, cultural, sociological, and religious dimensions of manga and anime, and examine specific sub-genres, artists, and stylistics. The book also addresses such topics as spirituality, the use of visual culture by Japanese new religious movements, Japanese Goth, nostalgia and Japanese pop, "cute" (kawali) subculture and comics for girls, and more. With illustrations throughout, it is a rich source for all scholars and fans of manga and anime as well as students of contemporary mass culture or Japanese culture and civilization.
