Book Three dimensional Surface Changes in the Mandible During Growth and Development

Download or read book Three dimensional Surface Changes in the Mandible During Growth and Development written by Bryon Joseph Viechnicki and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional analysis of mandibular growth provides the potential for pedodontists, orthodontists and surgeons to prescribe treatment that works in harmony with the individual growth of the patient. Despite efforts by 3D pioneers, the visualization of growth and development remains reminiscent of the landmark-based cephalometric analyses used in two-dimensional studies. The objective of this study was to identify 3D topographical changes of the mandible during growth and development of adolescent orthodontic patients. Nine pairs of pre- and post-orthodontic cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were used to generate mandibular surfaces. Surfaces were superimposed on trabecular bone in the anterior mandible using a mutual information algorithm, and topographical changes were visualized and quantified. The intra- and inter-rater intraclass correlation coefficients for surface generation (0.94 and 0.93, respectively) and superimposition (0.96 and 0.82, respectively) demonstrate the reliability of the techniques. The findings of this study support the theories of bone remodeling reported in histological, implant-based, and landmark studies of mandibular growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was ever a foreword requested for God's words? It is not indecent to write a preface for Hugo's "Growing Mandible"? After training in the Jaw's Old Testament, Hugo is writing the New One that he taught for 40 years long. Indeed, the last decade has been fertile in mechanical gadgets which have made diagnosis and surgery easier, such as, accurate CT 3-D images, and absorbable plating or osteodistraction, which brings a fine touch to treatment timing in children. However, all of this does not encompass the intellectual process, basic principles, tactics and procedures.

Book Assessment of Mandibular Surface Changes During Growth and Development

Download or read book Assessment of Mandibular Surface Changes During Growth and Development written by Eliana Sarit and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth of the mandible affects the outcome of orthodontic treatment in children. Traditionally, evaluation of mandibular growth uses 2D cephalometric analyses. While still used by orthodontists today, these 2D analyses are fraught with errors in measurement associated with interpreting 2D projections of 3D structures. Cone Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) provides a means to study craniofacial structures in 3D. The objective of this study is to identify 3D topographical changes of mandible during the period of growth and development in orthodontic patients. Ten subjects with serial CBCT images were selected from the Bolton-Brush collection. The age of the subjects ranged from 8 to 14 years-old. Mandibular growth is evaluated using serial pairs of CBCT images which are segmented, superimposed using regional voxel-based mutual information, and quantitatively evaluated in AmiraXImage®. Surface topography changes over time in these 19 subjects are reported as follows: 56% of surface remodeling at a threshold of 0.5mm, median remodeling of 0.6mm, 0.8mm 0.6mm SD. Intra- and inter-rater ICC reliability for for surface generation (0.82 and 0.90, respectively) and superimpositions (0.94 and 0.93, respectively) demonstrate the reliability of the technique. The findings of this study support theories of bone remodeling reported in histological and radiographic studies of mandibular growth.

Book excerpt: There's a silent epidemic in western civilization, and it is right under our noses. Our jaws are getting smaller and our teeth crooked and crowded, creating not only aesthetic challenges but also difficulties with breathing. Modern orthodontics has persuaded us that braces and oral devices can correct these problems. While teeth can certainly be straightened, what about the underlying causes of this rapid shift in oral evolution and the health risks posed by obstructed airways? Sandra Kahn and Paul R. Ehrlich, a pioneering orthodontist and a world-renowned evolutionist, respectively, present the biological, dietary, and cultural changes that have driven us toward this major health challenge. They propose simple adjustments that can alleviate this developing crisis, as well as a major alternative to orthodontics that promises more significant long-term relief. Jaws will change your life. Every parent should read this book.

Book Pediatric Swallowing and Feeding

Download or read book Pediatric Swallowing and Feeding written by Joan C. Arvedson and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pediatric Swallowing and Feeding: Assessment and Management, Third Edition provides information to practitioners interested in and involved with children who demonstrate swallowing and feeding disorders. Since the 2002 publication of the second edition, there has been an exponential increase in the number of medically fragile and complex children with swallowing/feeding disorders. A corresponding proliferation in the related basic and clinical research has resulted in the increased appreciation of the complicated inter-relationships between structures and systems that contribute to swallowing/feeding development, function, and disorders. Case studies throughout the book provide examples for decision making and highlight salient points. New to the Third Edition: * Maureen A. Lefton-Greif, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, is welcomed as co-editor. She brings extensive research expertise and clinical practice in pediatric dysphagia and feeding. * All chapters contain significant updated evidence-based research and clinical information. * New chapters focus on the genetic testing and conditions associated with swallowing and feeding disorders, and the pulmonary manifestations and management of aspiration. * World Health Organization (WHO) description of an International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) sets the stage for an in-depth discussion of clinical feeding evaluation procedures, interpretation, and management decision making. Pediatric Swallowing and Feeding continues to be the leading text on pediatric dysphagia that provides practical information for clinicians seeing children with swallowing and feeding disorders. The overall importance of an appropriate fund of knowledge and shared experience employing team approaches is emphasized throughout this third edition as in the earlier editions of this book. From the Foreword: "The Editors have recognized the advances and changes in the understanding in the information now available for the care of pediatric swallowing and feeding challenges. They have recruited an outstanding group of contributors for this newest edition. There are numerous critically important updates and additions in the third edition. They have included World Health Organizations International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health is the functional basis in all areas of the book. This text has its importance as there has been an increased number of children with complex medical and healthcare conditions which are risk for feeding and swallowing disorders. This edition stresses the need for team approaches and also documents the use of “virtual” teams ...Pediatric Swallowing and Feeding: Assessment and Management, Third Edition is the fundamental holistic source for all healthcare providers providing the care for swallowing and feeding in children. This book will be utilized by all caring for children with feeding and swallowing problems throughout the world. The previous editions have been and now this updated third edition continues to be the standard source for the information concerning diagnosis and care of these children." —Robert J.
