Book Industry and Innovation

Download or read book Industry and Innovation written by W.H. Chaloner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, first published in 1990, commemorates one of the most notable economic historians of his age. Professor W.H. Chaloner taught in the History Department of the University of Manchester from 1945 to 1981. He preferred the article to the book as the most appropriate vehicle of publishing the results of his research. From 1938 to 1983 he wrote over 120 articles and prefaces, most of which appeared in historical journals and in the transactions of learned societies. These essays collected here cover a long period of time, from the Industrial Revolution to problems of the inter-war years in the twentieth century. They deal with a very wide range of topics, for Professor Chaloner was an authority on business, urban, transport, social and agricultural history.

Book British Colonial Theories 1570 1850

Download or read book British Colonial Theories 1570 1850 written by Klause E. Knorr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1944, this volume covers the period of the old Empire and of the readjustments of the second Empire which followed the failure of the old after the revolt of the American colonies, ending with the emergence of free trade, and is significant to the history of the American colonies and of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Its purpose is to present and examine significant British colonial theories on the advantages and disadvantages resulting to the mother country from the establishment and maintenance of overseas colonies. This study is interested not in persons but in ideas and divides itself into chronological periods within which arguments and theories are discussed on the basis of topical classifications. For what reasons, the author asks, was the building and preservation of Empire thought profitable or unprofitable to the British nation?

Book excerpt: This book, originally published in 1979, traces the growth of English radicalism from the time of Wilkes to the final suppression of the radical societies in 1799. The metropolitan radical movement is described in the context of the general democratic evolution of the West in the age of the American and French revolutions, by showing how its direction was influenced by events in France, Scotland and Ireland. The book emphasizes the importance of the great regional centres of provincial radicalism and of the evolution of a local, radical press. It also throws light on the impact of Painite radicalism, the origins of Anglo-french hostilities in 1793, the English treason trials of 1794, the protest movement of 1795 and the final phase of Anglo-Irish clandestine republicanism.

  • Author : Jacques M. Downs
  • Publisher : Hong Kong University Press
  • Release : 2014-11-01

Download or read book The Golden Ghetto written by Jacques M. Downs and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the opening of the treaty ports in the 1840s, Canton was the only Chinese port where foreign merchants were allowed to trade. The Golden Ghetto takes us into the world of one of this city’s most important foreign communities—the Americans—during the decades between the American Revolution of 1776 and the signing of the Sino-US Treaty of Wanghia in 1844. American merchants lived in isolation from Chinese society in sybaritic, albeit usually celibate luxury. Making use of exhaustive research, Downs provides an especially clear explanation of the Canton commercial setting generally and of the role of American merchants. Many of these men made fortunes and returned home to become important figures in the rapidly developing United States. The book devotes particular attention to the biographical details of the principal American traders, the leading American firms, and their operations in Canton and the United States. Opium smuggling receives especial emphasis, as does the important topic of early diplomatic relations between the United States and China. Since its first publication in 1997, The Golden Ghettohas been recognized as the leading work on Americans trading at Canton. Long out of print, this new edition makes this key work again available, both to scholars and a wider readership. “The fullest exposition on the subject thus far and as the final word on extant, previously untapped, English-language sources.” — Eileen Scully, in The China Quarterly
