JAMES SEWELL AND NEPHEW. TT has been stated that the original cashier of the Branch Bank of England, 1826, was a Mr. James Sewell, also that in 1834 Mr. Sewell became manager of the Commercial Bank of England, which concern, in 1841, broke down. Mr. Sewell showed himself equal to the occasion, and, with admirable calmness and enterprise, commenced on his own account, starting "The Discount Bank" in the premises at the corner of Norfolk Street, originally occupied by the District, and in which the business has been continued ever since. A visit to this old place is really very interesting. It has scarcely been touched, except as to office fixtures and fittings, since the days of Mr. Edensor; the old double flight ot steps up to the door--the fashion of a century ago--has never been altered. Mr. Sewell was a very able man. If, in his old age, the most eccentric of Manchester bankers, throughout life he was one of the shrewdest. Had the board of the Commercial allowed itself to be guided by him, that unfortunate bank would probably never have gone to the wall. Mr. Sewell's change to it from the Branch, though calamitous at first, since he invested all his little property in the shares, was eventually the making of his fortune. Here we have an instance, just the reverse of one or two that have been named, of a man better qualified for the position of master than of servant. The experience, however, which he had gained in the Commercial made him hate all joint-stocks most cordially, and for evermore. When he started, he received the warm and very useful support of Mr. W. H. Thorpe (of Livesey and Thorpe), and of the late Mr. W. W. Scrimgeour, of the Union Bank of London. Among his other stalwart friends were old Mr. Marsland, ...

Wider coverage is given to the records of major domestic banks, British-owned overseas banks, merchant banks and discount houses. There are also additional listings of records of long defunct banks. Arranged alphabetically by name, the entries for each bank contain in most cases: · A brief history of the bank to explain numerous name changes. · Information as to where the bank's records are held. · Details of what the records consist of. The entries are set in context by introductory chapters covering the historical structure and function of British banking and the purpose, format and research value of the chief series of historical records commonly found in bank archives. In addition to its contribution to the study of banking history, this monumental reference work facilitates a wider knowledge and understanding of the history of British finance.

Book The World of Private Banking

Download or read book The World of Private Banking written by Youssef Cassis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a full and authoritative account of the history of private banking, beginning with its development in conjunction with the world markets served by and centred on a few European cities, notably Amsterdam and London. These banks were usually partnerships, a form of organization which persisted as the role of private banking changed in response to the political and economic transformations of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was in this period, and the succeeding Golden Age of private banking from 1815 to the 1870s, that many of the great names this book treats rose to fame: Baring, Rothschild, Mallet and Hottinger became synonymous with wealth and economic power, as German, French and the remarkably long-lasting Geneva banks flourished and expanded. The last parts of this study detail the way in which private banking adapted to the age of the corporate economy from the 1870s to the 1930s, the decline during and after the Great Depression and the post-war renaissance. It concludes with an appraisal of the causes and consequences of the modern expansion of private banking: no longer the exclusive preserve of partnerships, the management of investment portfolios of wealthy individuals and institutions is now a major concern of international joint-stock banks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a vital new work; the first to take the University of Manchester’s Museum as its subject. By setting the museum in its cultural and intellectual contexts, Nature and culture explores twentieth-century collecting and display, and the status of the object in the modern world. Beginning with the origins of the Manchester Museum, accounting for its development as an internationally renowned university museum, and concluding at its major expansion at the turn of the millennium, this book casts new light on the history of museums. How did objects become knowledge? Who encountered museum objects on their way to museums? What happened to collections within the museum? How did visitors use and respond to objects? In answering these questions, Nature and culture illuminates not only the history of one institution, but also contributes to wider discussions in the history of science, cultural history and museology.

Book An Age of Equipoise Reassessing mid Victorian Britain

Download or read book An Age of Equipoise Reassessing mid Victorian Britain written by Martin Hewitt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Age of Equipoise by W.L Burn was published in 1964 and became a central text in the canon of interpretations of the Victorian period. The book subsequently fell out of favour but recent claims to establish a new interpretative standard have, paradoxically, prompted reviewers to cast back to Burn's work as the orthodox standard against which such claims should be judged. The essays in this volume by British and American contributors all engage, to varying degrees, with the notion of 'equipoise' and how it can help to illuminate the mid-Victorian period in ways which alternative formulations cannot. Some of the chapters develop arguments embedded in Burn's own book; others take up issues largely absent in The Age of Equipoise, such as the position of children, Britain's interaction with the wider world, and the threats the period experienced to its concept of masculine identity. Together the essays demonstrate the intricacy and turbulence of the forces of cohesion in Victorian society, along with the success of that culture in achieving a working, if shifting, modus vivendi. Moreover, they substantiate the argument that, whatever the limitations of Burn's work, 'equipoise' deserves rehabilitation as a powerful conceptual framework for making sense of mid-Victorian Britain. About the Editor: Martin Hewitt is Director of the Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies and editor of the Journal of Victorian Culture. With Robert Poole he has recently produced an edition of The Diaries of Samuel Bamford, 1858-61 (Sutton, 2000).
