Book Beach Nourishment Theory And Practice

Download or read book Beach Nourishment Theory And Practice written by Robert G Dean and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2003-01-23 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for engineers, students of coastal processes and laypersons interested in beach nourishment, which consists of the placement of large quantities of good quality sediment on the beach to advance the shoreline seaward. The improvement of project performance through proper design and the predictability of performance are emphasized. The overall longevity of a project is addressed as are local erosional areas. The roles which wave height, project length and sediment quality play in project performance are addressed quantitatively. The results are illustrated through reference to a number of monitored nourishment projects. Biological and economic aspects of beach nourishment are addressed.

Book Dade County Florida Beach Nourishment Project

Download or read book Dade County Florida Beach Nourishment Project written by Roberto Liotta and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the background and performance of the "Dade County Beach Nourishment Project", which was constructed over the period 1976 to 1983. This report presents data and analysis results based on beach profile monitoring, and the resulting shoreline changes and sand volume changes. The report draws upon monitoring data available for the period preceding and following the beach nourishment project for quantitative analysis of the beach fill performance and understanding ofcoastal processes in the study area, focusing particularly on areas within the project which, atypically, perform poorly compared to expectations or neighboring areas. These areas are called "Erosional Hot Spots" (EHS). Also presented are evaluations of the overall performance of the project. This report includes appendixes that provide access to much of the processed data for analysis by others, who may be interested in greater detail. Appendix A presents plots of the profile survey data listed by DEP Monument Number for visual inspection and Appendix B provides plots of shoreline and volume changes for different periods.

Book Beach Nourishment Project Response and Design Evaluation Ocean City Maryland

Download or read book Beach Nourishment Project Response and Design Evaluation Ocean City Maryland written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed monitoring of the performance of a two-phase beach nourishment project has provided valuable information on beach fill behavior and long-term response of a beach fill to prevailing coastal processes. The Atlantic Coast of Maryland (Ocean City) Shoreline Protection Project began with placement of a recreational beach by the State of Maryland during the summer of 1988. Within three months of placement, four storms impacted the area. Recovery was monitored for an additional two years. In the summers of 1990 and 1991, additional fill material including a storm protection dune was placed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a second phase for the purpose of storm protection. Within a year of the first placement, two large storms impacted the project. Initial recovery was also documented. Project monitoring included 12 profile survey lines, sediment collection, and placement of two dedicated wave gauges. The beach nourishment project performed well in protecting the beachfront infrastructure of Ocean City from storm damage. The fill material was eroded from the foreshore after the major storms of 1989 and 1991/92, but could be accounted for in the nearshore between the shoreline and closure. Representative profile survey locations show the differential behavior of the fill controlled by nearshore bathymetric variability along the project length. The 37th Street location represents the flatter, bar/trough type profile typical of the southern portion of the fill. Localized 'hot spots' of erosion occurred in areas where a shoal system attaches to the shoreface, as shown at 81st Street. The erosion pattern associated with these shoals was probably produced by wave convergence and divergence over these features.

Book Habitats and Biota of the Gulf of Mexico Before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

Download or read book Habitats and Biota of the Gulf of Mexico Before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill written by C. Herb Ward and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 917 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. The Gulf of Mexico is an open and dynamic marine ecosystem rich in natural resources but heavily impacted by human activities, including agricultural, industrial, commercial and coastal development. The Gulf of Mexico has been continuously exposed to petroleum hydrocarbons for millions of years from natural oil and gas seeps on the sea floor, and more recently from oil drilling and production activities located in the water near and far from shore. Major accidental oil spills in the Gulf are infrequent; two of the most significant include the Ixtoc I blowout in the Bay of Campeche in 1979 and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010. Unfortunately, baseline assessments of the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before these spills either were not available, or the data had not been systematically compiled in a way that would help scientists assess the potential short-term and long-term effects of such events. This 2-volume series compiles and summarizes thousands of data sets showing the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Volume 1 covers: water and sediment quality and contaminants in the Gulf; natural oil and gas seeps in the Gulf of Mexico; coastal habitats, including flora and fauna and coastal geology; offshore benthos and plankton, with an analysis of current knowledge on energy capture and energy flows in the Gulf; and shellfish and finfish resources that provide the basis for commercial and recreational fisheries.
