Book excerpt: Henie Onstad Kunstsenter has been groundbreaking for almost 50 years in presenting new and experimental art, and is a historical place for photography in Norway.Edited by MELK together with Susanne Østby Sæther (HOK) Why Photography? highlights and go into depth on the current generation of photographers and functions as a reference publication for the years to come. They ask artists to state, with words and images, how they see and relate to photography as a technical apparatus, and why they have chosen photography as well as the potential future of the medium. Rather than being a classic scholarly publication, the goal is to release a visual manifesto that outlines many and varied viewpoints from every corner of the globe. In 2017 Henie Onstad launched an ambitious photo program, which aims to increase the engagement with and knowledge of modern and contemporary photography as an art form. As part of the photo program, they develop a new and extensive exhibition format in the form of a triennial that will showcase recent developments in photography and camera based art more generally. The exhibition recurs every third year, bringing together recent work of around 35 international artists.Henie Onstad will be working with a new collaborative partner as co-curators for each edition. For the first edition they are collaborating with the artist-run Oslo-based gallery MELK (Behzad Farazollahi, Christian Tunge and Bjarne Bare), who have been pivotal for promoting new practices within Scandinavian photography nationally and internationally.

Book The Loss of Hindustan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Manan Ahmed Asif
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2020-11-24
  • ISBN : 067498790X
  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book The Loss of Hindustan written by Manan Ahmed Asif and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A field-changing history explains how the subcontinent lost its political identity as the home of all religions and emerged as India, the land of the Hindus. Did South Asia have a shared regional identity prior to the arrival of Europeans in the late fifteenth century? This is a subject of heated debate in scholarly circles and contemporary political discourse. Manan Ahmed Asif argues that Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Republic of India share a common political ancestry: they are all part of a region whose people understand themselves as Hindustani. Asif describes the idea of Hindustan, as reflected in the work of native historians from roughly 1000 CE to 1900 CE, and how that idea went missing. This makes for a radical interpretation of how India came to its contemporary political identity. Asif argues that a European understanding of India as Hindu has replaced an earlier, native understanding of India as Hindustan, a home for all faiths. Turning to the subcontinent’s medieval past, Asif uncovers a rich network of historians of Hindustan who imagined, studied, and shaped their kings, cities, and societies. Asif closely examines the most complete idea of Hindustan, elaborated by the early seventeenth century Deccan historian Firishta. His monumental work, Tarikh-i Firishta, became a major source for European philosophers and historians, such as Voltaire, Kant, Hegel, and Gibbon during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Yet Firishta’s notions of Hindustan were lost and replaced by a different idea of India that we inhabit today. The Loss of Hindustan reveals the intellectual pathways that dispensed with multicultural Hindustan and created a religiously partitioned world of today.

Book The Unthinkable Revolution in Iran

Download or read book The Unthinkable Revolution in Iran written by Charles Kurzman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, would remain on the throne for the foreseeable future: This was the firm conclusion of a top-secret CIA analysis issued in October 1978. One hundred days later the shah--despite his massive military, fearsome security police, and superpower support was overthrown by a popular and largely peaceful revolution. But the CIA was not alone in its myopia, as Charles Kurzman reveals in this penetrating work; Iranians themselves, except for a tiny minority, considered a revolution inconceivable until it actually occurred. Revisiting the circumstances surrounding the fall of the shah, Kurzman offers rare insight into the nature and evolution of the Iranian revolution and into the ultimate unpredictability of protest movements in general. As one Iranian recalls, The future was up in the air. Through interviews and eyewitness accounts, declassified security documents and underground pamphlets, Kurzman documents the overwhelming sense of confusion that gripped pre-revolutionary Iran, and that characterizes major protest movements. His book provides a striking picture of the chaotic conditions under which Iranians acted, participating in protest only when they expected others to do so too, the process approaching critical mass in unforeseen and unforeseeable ways. Only when large numbers of Iranians began to think the unthinkable, in the words of the U.S. ambassador, did revolutionary expectations become a self-fulfilling prophecy. A corrective to 20-20 hindsight, this book reveals shortcomings of analyses that make the Iranian revolution or any major protest movement seem inevitable in retrospect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While researching for his forthcoming book, The Anarchy, which tells the story of how a militarized multinational destroyed and replaced the mighty and supremely elegant empire of the Great Mughals, William Dalrymple visited all the places in the Indian subcontinent where this history took place -- the battlefields and ruins, the mosques, Sufi shrines and temples, the paradise gardens and pleasure grounds, the barrack blocks and townhouses, the crumbling Mughal havelis and the palaces and forts. This collection is a record of that journey. Shot on his Samsung Edge, the striking black-and-white images in this collection convey the immediacy and lack of pretension that a cellphone offers in recording the world around us. For, as Dalrymple himself says, 'Photography should always be about the eye, not the equipment.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pushtimarg, a Hindu sect established in India in the fifteenth century, possesses a unique culture--reaching back centuries and still vital today--in which art and devotion are deeply intertwined. This important volume, illustrated with more than one hundred vivid images, offers a new, in-depth look at the Pushtimarg and its rich aesthetic traditions, which are largely unknown outside of South Asia. Original essays by eminent scholars of Indian art focus on the style of worship, patterns of patronage, and artistic heritage that generated pichvais, large paintings on cloth designed to hang in temples, as well as other paintings for the Pushtimarg. In this expansive study, the authors deftly examine how pichvais were and still are used in the seasonal and daily veneration of Shrinathji, an aspect of Krishna as a child who is the chief deity of the temple town of Nathdwara in Rajasthan. Gates of the Lord introduces readers not only to the visual world of the Pushtimarg, but also to the spirit of Nathdwara.

Download or read book Unseeing Empire written by Bakirathi Mani and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Unseeing Empire Bakirathi Mani examines how empire continues to haunt South Asian American visual cultures. Weaving close readings of fine art together with archival research and ethnographic fieldwork at museums and galleries across South Asia and North America, Mani outlines the visual and affective relationships between South Asian diasporic artists, their photographic work, and their viewers. She notes that the desire for South Asian Americans to see visual representations of themselves is rooted in the use of photography as a form of colonial documentation and surveillance. She examines fine art photography by South Asian diasporic artists who employ aesthetic strategies such as duplication and alteration that run counter to viewers' demands for greater visibility. These works fail to deliver on viewers' desires to see themselves, producing instead feelings of alienation, estrangement, and loss. These feelings, Mani contends, allow viewers to question their own visibility as South Asian Americans in U.S. public culture and to reflect on their desires to be represented.

Book The Art of Cloth in Mughal India

  • Author : Sylvia Houghteling
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2022-03-29
  • ISBN : 0691215782
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book The Art of Cloth in Mughal India written by Sylvia Houghteling and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When a rich man in seventeenth-century South Asia enjoyed a peaceful night's sleep, he imagined himself enveloped in a velvet sleep. In the poetic imagination of the time, the fine dew of early evening was like a thin cotton cloth from Bengal, and woolen shawls of downy pashmina sent by the Mughal emperors to their trusted noblemen approximated the soft hand of the ruler on the vassal's shoulder. Textiles in seventeenth-century South Asia represented more than cloth to their makers and users. They simulated sensory experience, from natural, environmental conditions to intimate, personal touch. The Art of Cloth in Mughal India is the first art historical account of South Asian textiles from the early modern era. Author Sylvia Houghteling resurrects a truth that seventeenth-century world citizens knew, but which has been forgotten in the modern era: South Asian cloth ranked among the highest forms of art in the global hierarchy of luxury goods, and had a major impact on culture and communication. While studies abound in economic history about the global trade in Indian textiles that flourished from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, they rarely engage with the material itself and are less concerned with the artistic-and much less the literary and social-significance of the taste for cloth. This book is richly illustrated with images of textiles, garments, and paintings that are held in little-known collections and have rarely, if ever, been published. Rather than rely solely on records of European trading companies, Houghteling draws upon poetry in local languages and integrates archival research from unpublished royal Indian inventories to tell a new history of this material culture, one with a far more balanced view of its manufacture and use, as well as its purchase and trade"--
