Book Manan

Download or read book Manan written by Yasmin Sait and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the title suggests, this book aims to encourage introspection and self-discovery, hence, it’s not prescriptive and far from being, yet another, “self-help” book. Simply put, it’s a collection of anecdotes and life lessons of nine inspiring women, from different walks of life, whose life’s journey is the inspiring tale. These nine women overcame societal stereotypes, to define purpose and meaning to their lives, as an ongoing process, since evolving stages of life throws up new challenges as well as different pathways, with no “google lady” to guide, so one must navigate based on individual predisposition and self-esteem. Each narrative is distinct with its own nuances, poignancy and joy, hence, feel free to jump into any chapter that appeals to you and get back to the rest, or just re-read those that inspired you! The author, Yasmin Sait, has 3 decades experience in retail and entertainment sectors, including mother cum manager role for two media celebrities, Kubbra Sait and Danish Sait. She now functions as a “Life purpose coach” and counsellor. She too shares her life journey, with each twist and turn throwing up new challenges as well as opportunities to rejuvenate.

Book excerpt: He closes his eyes and finds today's date floating towards him. Shimmering in the darkness, swivelling - like the text on the Windows 95 screensaver. It seeps in through his forehead and gets absorbed. 23-04-98 is now a part of him. Today's date, a Saturday, when the first sign of what he so eagerly awaited has appeared... It is the summer of 1998 in a sleepy Indian town that is just awakening to the age of information, and young Manan has acquired his first official sign of puberty. The world around him, though, refuses to understand the magnitude of the moment. Instead, it teases him by offering all sorts of temptations, posing all sorts of quandaries. And it doesn't help that his friends are taller and larger than him, that his parents fight all the time, that his sister no longer has time for him, that the love of his life barely knows that he exists. With an earnest voice that is colourfully candid about middle-class India and the tyranny of family relationships, authority figures and peer pressure, Manan is a tragicomedy of growing pains and the triumphs of a stoic heart.

Book Tides of Change on Grand Manan Island

Download or read book Tides of Change on Grand Manan Island written by Joan Marshall and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grand Manan Island, a 200-year old fishing village in the Bay of Fundy, has been overwhelmed by globalization, technology, and changing government policies. Changes on the island call into question the myth of the rural idyll and point to an urgent need for reconsideration of urban-rural divides. In less than a decade, the island community has faced the degradation of the wild fishery and rapid growth of aquaculture, an increasing presence of multinational corporations, new federal initiatives with respect to aboriginal policies, and widespread social dysfunction. Joan Marshall uses over twelve years of intensive ethnographic research to chart the nature and pace of social and cultural change on Grand Manan, showing how it relates to globalization and environmental degradation, as well as to a confluence of outside sources. The personal stories of the Grand Manan people bring to life their local struggles and show how their community, like other rural and fishing communities across Canada, is being inexorably changed by forces outside their control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A field-changing history explains how the subcontinent lost its political identity as the home of all religions and emerged as India, the land of the Hindus. Did South Asia have a shared regional identity prior to the arrival of Europeans in the late fifteenth century? This is a subject of heated debate in scholarly circles and contemporary political discourse. Manan Ahmed Asif argues that Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Republic of India share a common political ancestry: they are all part of a region whose people understand themselves as Hindustani. Asif describes the idea of Hindustan, as reflected in the work of native historians from roughly 1000 CE to 1900 CE, and how that idea went missing. This makes for a radical interpretation of how India came to its contemporary political identity. Asif argues that a European understanding of India as Hindu has replaced an earlier, native understanding of India as Hindustan, a home for all faiths. Turning to the subcontinent’s medieval past, Asif uncovers a rich network of historians of Hindustan who imagined, studied, and shaped their kings, cities, and societies. Asif closely examines the most complete idea of Hindustan, elaborated by the early seventeenth century Deccan historian Firishta. His monumental work, Tarikh-i Firishta, became a major source for European philosophers and historians, such as Voltaire, Kant, Hegel, and Gibbon during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Yet Firishta’s notions of Hindustan were lost and replaced by a different idea of India that we inhabit today. The Loss of Hindustan reveals the intellectual pathways that dispensed with multicultural Hindustan and created a religiously partitioned world of today.

Book excerpt: I write to you through Bassa, of the Niger-Congo family, western Sudanic subgroup and the Kwa branch of Africa. The Bassa are an African people. The central theme of this book is that the Bassa have a form of government, which shows Bassa people can govern themselves, and that they have done so from time immemorial until the interjection of alien leadership philosophy. Non-Africans should be dissuaded from their concept of African inability to govern themselves. Bassa history and leadership shows one aspect of African leadership as well as contributions to human leadership. Presenting the Bassa leadership to the world is a clarion call for all Africans to look to their traditional route to design a form of government that fits their culture.
