Book Managing Water and Waste in the New Millennium

Download or read book Managing Water and Waste in the New Millennium written by P. Pybus and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 2001-09-30 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major problems facing the developing world is the rapid expansion of low-income urban areas as a result of migration in from rural areas. The result has been staggering growth in informal settlement areas around many major cities and consequent pressure on the sustainable supply of potable water and waste disposal that challenges governments, NGOs and the communities themselves. To mitigate these problems it will also be necessary to address the issues as they relate to rural and isolated communities. Successful solutions need multidisciplinary approaches that engage with social and institutional aspects as much as the technical and environmental. The 24 papers selected for these proceedings tackle various problems of water supply, sanitation and industrial waste treatment, addressing the issues at strategic and managerial levels as well as in localized and practical techniques. Together they enable all interested parties to share the experience and expertise from around the world that is leading the way towards successful water and waste management in the new millennium.

Book WATER The Blood of the Earth

Download or read book WATER The Blood of the Earth written by Allerd Stikker and published by Cosimo Classics. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Allerd Stikker has always reminded me of Alexis de Tocqueville, who would have chosen to study the problem surrounding water rather than the American democracy. He has the same insatiable curiosity, the same energy, same passion, same ease in mixing analysis with intuition, the capacity to draw together different cultures, the same capacity to listen and to dialogue with those who reason from different starting blocks. "Water, the Blood of the Earth is the outcome of reflection and action of a cosmopolitan who has remained loyal to his native land, mixing some European thinking of the Age of Enlightenment with some futuristic viewpoints." -Charles Louis de Maudhuy, advisor to the chairman, Veolia Water "Lack of access to clean and sufficient water in many parts of the world, especially in Asia and Africa, will be a major issue in the coming decades. "This book presents an overall view on the diversity of problems and solutions, based on the author's involvement in water-related projects. Over the course of the years I have followed some of these projects with interest; they inspire us to take concrete actions." -Antony Burgmans, former chairman, Unilever "In this book Allerd describes his convincing views on desalination solutions for local and urban clean water shortages as well as his deeply felt findings on the spiritual meanings of water, all assembled on a 20 years' journey on which I was lucky to travel along." -Leonor Lindner

Book WHO Guidelines for the Safe Use of Wasterwater Excreta and Greywater

Download or read book WHO Guidelines for the Safe Use of Wasterwater Excreta and Greywater written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2006 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of the WHO Guidelines for the Safe Use of Wastewater, Excreta and Greywater has been extensively updated to take account of new scientific evidence and contemporary approaches to risk management. The revised Guidelines reflect a strong focus on disease prevention and public health principles. This new edition responds to a growing demand from WHO Member States for guidance on the safe use of wastewater, excreta, and greywater in agriculture and aquaculture. Its target audience includes environmental and public health scientists, researchers, engineers, policy-makers and those responsible for developing standards and regulations. The Guidelines are presented in four separate volumes: Volume 1: Policy and regulatory aspects Volume 2:Wastewater use in agriculture Volume 3: Wastewater and excreta use in aquaculture Volume 4: Excreta and greywater use in agriculture. Volume 1 of the Guidelines presents policy issues and regulatory measures distilled from the technical detail found in volumes 2, 3, and 4. Those faced with the need to expedite the development of policies, procedures, and regulatory frameworks, at national and local government levels, will find the essential information in this volume. It also includes summaries of the other volumes in the series. Volume 2 of the Guidelines explains requirements to promote safe use concepts and practices including health-based targets and minimum procedures. It also covers a substantive revision of approaches to ensuring the microbial safety of wastewater used in agriculture. It introduces health impact assessment of new wastewater projects. Volume 3 of the Guidelines informs readers on the assessment of microbial hazards and toxic chemicals and the management of the associated risks when using wastewater and excreta in aquaculture. It explains requirements to promote safe use practices, including minimum procedures and specific health-based targets. It puts trade-offs between potential risks and nutritional benefits in a wider development context. Volume 4 of the Guidelines focuses exclusively on the safe use f excreta and greywater in agriculture. Recent trends in sanitation, including ecological sanitation, are driven by rapid urbanization. The momentum created by the Millennium Development Goals is resulting in dramatic changes in human waste handling and processing. New opportunities enable the use of human waste as a resource for pro-poor agricultural development, particularly in periurban areas. Best practice to minimize associated health risks is at the heart of this volume.

Book Geological and Geotechnical Engineering in the New Millennium

Download or read book Geological and Geotechnical Engineering in the New Millennium written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-31 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of geoengineering is at a crossroads where the path to high-tech solutions meets the path to expanding applications of geotechnology. In this report, the term "geoengineering" includes all types of engineering that deal with Earth materials, such as geotechnical engineering, geological engineering, hydrological engineering, and Earth-related parts of petroleum engineering and mining engineering. The rapid expansion of nanotechnology, biotechnology, and information technology begs the question of how these new approaches might come to play in developing better solutions for geotechnological problems. This report presents a vision for the future of geotechnology aimed at National Science Foundation (NSF) program managers, the geological and geotechnical engineering community as a whole, and other interested parties, including Congress, federal and state agencies, industry, academia, and other stakeholders in geoengineering research. Some of the ideas may be close to reality whereas others may turn out to be elusive, but they all present possibilities to strive for and potential goals for the future. Geoengineers are poised to expand their roles and lead in finding solutions for modern Earth systems problems, such as global change, emissions-free energy supply, global water supply, and urban systems.
