Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many species prey upon the threatened gopher tortoises, including the Red Imported Fire Ant Solenopsis invicta. While human alterations to native habitat have led to a decline in gopher tortoises, "disturbance specialists" like S. invicta often thrive on such changes. This study examines three ant surveys at gopher tortoise burrows within a section of residential "greenway" in southeastern Florida before and after "reduction mowing". While the presence of S. invicta did decrease after the reduction mowing, the numbers of native ants and ant species richness in general also showed a significant decline. Another invasive ant, the Little Fire Ant, Wasmannia auropunctata (Roger, 1863), showed a significant increase after the mowing. While not as destructive as S. invicta, W. auropunctata has been documented to be a significant pest to many terrestrial vertebrates and should be considered a potential threat in future gopher tortoise and land management schemes.

Many of these introduced organisms become invasive, and represent a worldwide concern. The invasion process can be complex and not all introduced organisms are successful invaders. One of the most successful invasive ants in the world is the little fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata), which was reportedly introduced to the tropical island of Puerto Rico over a hundred years ago. In this study, population structure and heterozygosity levels of the little fire W. auropunctata between ecological life zones of the island were evaluated through micosatellite data. The results of this study should expand the understanding in the invasion processes, forms of adaptations (Unicoloniality) and success of the little fire ant W. auropunctata in Puerto Rico and worldwide.

Book excerpt: Since the arrival of Europeans about 500 years ago, an estimated 50,000 non-native species have been introduced to North America (including Hawaii). Non-native species figure prominently in our lives, often as ornamentals, sources of food or pests. Although many introduced species are beneficial, there is increasing awareness of the enormous economic costs associated with non-native pests. In contrast, the ecological impacts of non-native species have received much less public and scientific attention, despite the fact that invasion by exotic species ranks second to habitat destruction as a cause of species loss. In particular, there is little information about the ecological impacts of hyper-diverse groups such as terrestrial fungi and invertebrates. A science symposium, Ecological impacts of non-native invertebrates and fungi on terrestrial ecosystems, held in 2006, brought together scientists from the USA and Canada to review the state of knowledge in this field of work. Additional reviews were solicited following the symposium. The resulting set of review/synthesis papers and case studies represents a cross-section of work on ecological impacts of non-native terrestrial invertebrates and fungi. Although there is a strong focus on Canadian work, there is also significant presentation of work in the northern USA and Europe.

Myrmecology as a science had its beginning in the last century with great naturalists like Andre, Darwin, Emery, Escherich, Fabre, Fields, Forel, Janet, Karawaiew, McCook, Mayr, Smith, Wasmann and Wheeler. They studied ants as an interesting biological phenomenon, with little thought of the possible beneficial or detrimental effects ants could have on human activities (see Wheeler 1910 as an example). When Europeans began colonizing the New World, serious ant problems occurred. The first reports of pest ants came from Spanish and Portuguese officials of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in Trinidad, The West Indies, Central America and South America. Leaf-cutting ants were blamed for making agricultural development almost impossible in many areas. These ants, Atta and Acromyrmex species, are undoubtedly the first ants identified as pests and may be considered to have initiated interest and research in applied myrmecology (Mariconi 1970).
