Book Organizational Risk Management

Download or read book Organizational Risk Management written by Krista N. Engemann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every organization faces difficult decisions when managing risk and the potential consequences of its manifestation. For a more thorough outlook on risk, organizations should also evaluate and engage with its advantages. Organizational Risk Management: Managing for Uncertainty and Ambiguity covers a series of perspectives that represent both causal and interpretative frameworks. These perspectives shed light on how organizational structures and processes adapt amid a complex, dynamic organizational environment in an effort to manage and exploit the accompanying risks of that environment. This volume will oftentimes challenge the expectation for and utility of clarity in crisis situations, thereby favoring uncertainty and ambiguity as the necessary conditions to exploit organizational risk and explore opportunities that rely on interpretation, learning, and knowledge among individuals. The ultimate objective of Organizational Risk Management: Managing for Uncertainty and Ambiguity is to promote discussion among practitioners and organizational scholars who venture to understand organizational risk. Setting such a goal is to essentially practice what this volume shall inevitably preach: engage one another in order to proactively monitor and respond to risk. Strengthening ties along the bridge between practice and science will be a welcomed consequence of this volume.

Book Information Ecology

Download or read book Information Ecology written by Thomas H. Davenport and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-06-26 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to virtually every business writer, we are in the midst of a new "information age," one that will revolutionize how workers work, how companies compete, perhaps even how thinkers think. And it is certainly true that Information Technology has become a giant industry. In America, more that 50% of all capital spending goes into IT, accounting for more than a third of the growth of the entire American economy in the last four years. Over the last decade, IT spending in the U.S. is estimated at 3 trillion dollars. And yet, by almost all accounts, IT hasn't worked all that well. Why is it that so many of the companies that have invested in these costly new technologies never saw the returns they had hoped for? And why do workers, even CEOs, find it so hard to adjust to new IT systems? In Information Ecology, Thomas Davenport proposes a revolutionary new way to look at information management, one that takes into account the total information environment within an organization. Arguing that the information that comes from computer systems may be considerably less valuable to managers than information that flows in from a variety of other sources, the author describes an approach that encompasses the company's entire information environment, the management of which he calls information ecology. Only when organizations are able to combine and integrate these diverse sources of information, and to take them to a higher level where information becomes knowledge, will they realize the full power of their information ecology. Thus, the author puts people, not technology, at the center of the information world. Information and knowledge are human creations, he points out, and we will never excel at managing them until we give people a primary role. Citing examples drawn from his own extensive research and consulting including such major firms as A.T. & T., American Express, Ford, General Electric, Hallmark, Hoffman La Roche, IBM, Polaroid, Pacific Bell, and Toshiba Davenport illuminates the critical components of information ecology, and at every step along the way, he provides a quick assessment survey for managers to see how their organization measures up. He discusses the importance of developing an overall strategy for information use; explores the infighting, jealousy over resources, and political battles that can frustrate information sharing; underscores the importance of looking at how people really use information (how they search for it, modify it, share it, hoard it, and even ignore it) and the kinds of information they want; describes the ideal information staff, who not only store and retrive information, but also prune, provide context, enhance style, and choose the right presentation medium (in an age of work overload, vital information must be presented compellingly so the appropriate people recognize and use it); examines how information management should be done on a day to day basis; and presents several alternatives to the machine engineering approach to structuring and modeling information. Davenport makes explicit what many managers already know in their gut: that useful information flow depends on people, not equipment. In Information Ecology he paves the way for all managers to build a more competitive, creative, practical information environment for their companies.

Download or read book Think Risk written by Shital Thekdi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-18 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk is the single most prevalent and enduring factor that influences every individual, organization, and society. People often seek protection from negative risk events, but also seek to take advantage of opportunities arising from positive risk events. We may feel overwhelmed by messages encountered in daily interactions with media and society, contributing to a sense of ambiguity over how to act in response to risk-related information and misinformation. We seek to leverage evidence and reason to find our own balance between both positive and negative outcomes in an uncertain world. This groundbreaking book delivers practical concepts and tools that empower readers to leverage innovations in risk science to improve their abilities to interpret, assess, communicate, and handle risk. It provides a practical non-quantitative approach to understanding the risk and making better decisions involving risk. Think RISK covers several key themes in risk science: a) the main goals and strategies for understanding and managing risk; b) how readers can inform their risk stances by considering their own individual values and mission; c) the difference between risk and safety, and how that difference is critical for managing the risk; d) the role of psychological factors when understanding and managing the risk; e) the role of communication when understanding and managing the risk; and f) the general importance and incentives for effectively understanding and managing the risk. Written for business professionals in all private and public sectors, this book will also be relevant to non-business professionals such as medical practitioners and policymakers and would be an ideal fit for executive education and seminar-style courses in universities, corporate book clubs, and training seminars. Because it’s based on foundational and scientifically accepted ideas and principles, the book should remain relevant for many years.

Book Human Safety and Risk Management

Download or read book Human Safety and Risk Management written by A. Ian Glendon and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written by two authors with extensive experience of lecturing on the 'Human Aspects of Safety' on training courses for safety practitioners, considers major psychological and organizational issues within the framework of health and safety at work and the management of risk, extending applied knowledge from psychology and related disciplines in new directions. The book reflects developing approaches to managing risk as it applies to individuals, teams and organizations in the workplace. Specifically it aims to improve understanding of ways in which human behaviour both influences, and can be shaped by, effective management of safety and risk in the workplace. For the safety and risk professional and student alike there are straightforward introductions to, and explorations of, the relevant aspects of behavioural science, supported by numerous examples. For those who wish to read further around the subject, this clear exposition of material is supplemented by references and sources of further reading. The basic appeal of the book lies in the coverage of material and logical progression through the various topics. The emphasis throughout is on the use of applied and theoretical approaches in explaining safety and risk applications. The book is as relevant to a practitioner as it is to a student audience, and contains guidance and advice relevant to practice, enforcement, teaching, training, research, consultancy and support services. Human Safety and Risk Management makes human aspects of safety and risk available to those who do not necessarily have a behavioural science background, including the informed lay reader.
